Hi Everyone.
Please i will like to seek your opinion , With the ongoing challenge regarding the proposed immigration policy,
Is now a good time for an immigrant currently on a Skilled work visa to consider buying a house (Prior to the release of the white paper, We had indicated interest in buying a house, our offer has been accepted and we have started the mortgage application process.
After the white paper release, I have started developing cold feet and reconsidering my deceision ,
What would you advise>
Thank you.
I would say "No" don't get the mortgage now.
That money is more useful to you in the bank.
Ask yourself if you want to invest in an environment where the Prime Minister called you a stranger despite your contributions.
You need your raw cash for leverage.
You can rethink the idea later when it's a little bit more conducive but for now wait.
This is the time to be pragmatic and not the time of "aspire to perspire".
My opinion.

I understand the shock that comes with the new policies and everything…but I want you to know this “everything you’re looking for is at the other side of fear”
If you’re courageous and you believe in yourself, you will definitely scale through…
Amidst the policies are still opportunities,it’s left for you to see the good in your journey…whether you take the risk or not, life will still go on but one thing is assured, the system will not give you the same opportunity it gave you this year next year
People who procrastinated about traveling last year are regretting this year for one reason or the other and you never can tell what next year holds so be strong and take a step…I hope this helps
I think the person you quoted is just being realistic given the current situation on ground.
If they've done a cost benefit analysis and they're on the losing end, it makes sense to rethink the journey. That's wisdom too.

Our matter don tire me to dey think about. This development of a thing should not be hard as previously thought. Many countries are doing their best to move up the ladder, no matter how small. So, why should it be difficult for elites from different groups to agree that let things be done properly while adhering to cultural beliefs and borders? Eh? You do this one there, I do this one here and everyone wins at the end of the day. Why should it be hard?
At the bold is why I think it's not an intelligence issue. Even if you cannot create or invent, you can at least "copy" or "outsource".
Our value system as black people has kept us at the bottom of the ladder.

Ignorance is the issue, am sure those who are thinking 10 years is not an issue are not aware of recent changes to sponsorship by employers
1. Cost of asg a COS is now over £500 from 299 and this is now in force
2. In the white paper just released the cost of immigration skills charge paid by employers to sponsor any worker will now go up by 32% currently it’s £1000 per year so sponsoring a worker for 5 years is £5000 now that will go up by 32%
3. In the white paper too for any employer to sponsor they must show evidence of investment and training of citizens before they can be approved to sponsor and that’s where the home office will be waiting to deny employers to assign COS.
So going forward it will be more difficult for employers to sponsor and that’s where the catch of this new proposed policy is to ensure not many will make it to the finish line of 10 years and let’s be real how many employers with all the cost implications will be ready to sponsor for a whopping 10 years and how easy will it be to get new employers to switch sponsorship so those saying they are willing to work for 10 years am not sure they understand this new policy thoroughly perhaps they need to go and study that white paper before they go open their wide mouth like that Tanimu guy 😂

There's one Nairalander lady who was the preacher of this ideology. I wonder what she has to say now.
Although to be fair, looking at the events in Nigeria, the White man is fairer and better than the Black man. At least, he built a functioning society.
At your last statement do you think it is a function of intelligence or value system?
I'm inclined to think it's the latter.

Very good, waiting for 15 or 20 years won’t be a bad idea too
Lol, people don't understand the implications of that precedent.
Say you want to slug out the 10 years and then another P.M comes and makes it 15 and then followed by another who tells you that a work visa does not mean you are entitled to settlement.
I believe U.K will get to the last statement at some point: trends don't lie.

Nah!
They want to kpeme in the UK. They believe they know more than the natives and can cut themselves off from their dominant societies. Thank God na the so-called liberal party aka lovey-dovey party with its leader labelling migrants as strangers, rightfully so anyway. In Reddit/UKPolitics, there were a lot of comments which stated that there should be a cultural clause to it where Aussies, Americans, New Zealanders aren't affected as Bangladeshis and Indians. You see, humans are tribal.
With my experience in the abroad, it is a place where you gain knowledge, build s, save hard currency to build where you know you are wanted, where people look like you, eat the dishes you like etc. It must not be Nigeria as Nigeria is not the only Black dominated country. I thought the 2023 elections would have taught people lessons, mbanu! If the natives say they don't want you, as evident by the comments I read on the Financial Times, what are you going to do about it?
In this life, you should never force anyone to like or accommodate you. Get what you want and port out.
I believe the lessons are being learnt: seen so many posts on TikTok telling immigrants to save and channel their investments back home since those announcements.
At least, all those "Home is where you are" statements have stopped.

Rewatched the SUPERMAN trailer over and over.
The first time I finished the trailer I didn't know when my face just lit up with a BIG smile. Nothing really funny was said or going on in the trailer but I just subconsciously smiled after.
A smile of satisfaction, confidence and pride in what I just saw.
And I believe many true Superman fans worldwide felt something similar in someway with the treatment of this film this trailer just teased.
Imagine me being this happy while watching a Superman trailer despite being more of a Batman fan.
We're in good hands.
Superman marketing is already cooking something MEGA like BARBIE.
I liked the trailer because it reminds me of the greatest superman film made so far: Man Of Steel.
This has the potential to be second best.

It’s easier than paying your landlord’s mortgage with your rent. I know.
British sarcasm.

AKALAMAGBO:
So you mean those who have the deposit should keep paying landlord for another 4 years? And not buy…
Is it not better to still get that mortgage, getting the mortgage means your deposit is tied against a property and you can sell if let’s say the government asked people to leave, that, you can recoup your deposit back.
Or I’m I missing the scope?
I don't know, everyone should do what suits them.
Every mallam with him kettle.

My opinion is:
Get the mortgage, if you can. When shite finally hits the ceiling and you need to return to Naij, you sell the house (hopefully you’ve built equity). You get something back.
But if you are perpetual rent, then when you have to return, your landlord gets to keep ALl you have paid on rents.
How easy is it to liquidate though?

When you say approach mortgages with caution” Do you mean pause any mortgage plan if there’s any and see what happens? Or save the mortgage deposit and keep saving 😂😂

Lol, both applies.

For me, the key take away is that relocation/Japa should be seen as a means to an end and never an end in itself. I'll say Nigerians (especially those without settled status) in the UK should be interested in politics back home, who rules, who wins elections etc because there's indeed no place like home. I'll say Nigerians in the UK should save save and save/invest for the rainy day, keep developing yourselves and earning transferrable skills/degrees, live a modest life and approach mortgages with caution. No place like home.
You are right especially on that Mortgage aspect.
It crossed my mind this year but given the precedents of the U.K government, I shelved the idea and decided to see what I can get at home first. Turns out my instincts were right.

I agree with you. I have mixed feelings about Xabi Alonso coming to the club. I feel like he has not been tested enough and should have success with other clubs before coming to Madrid.
Jürgen Klopp would have been the best choice: keeping an open mind.

A case of a movie trailer being way more interesting than the full film itself. Looked promising at first but quickly became stale with a very weak and predictable ending. The good thing about it was the creative ways the déaths occur.
So forgettable it took me over two weeks to write a review.
Not a strong one from Osgood Perkins, the LONGLEGS director.
I found it boring to be honest.
One of the most boring horror films I have seen in a

Thank God you are seeing what we have been parroting for years.
I just hope average men can be this ruthless too and look beyond worthless beauty and sex.
There are 2 sides of a relationship - Love and Business.
Most women consider the 2 ruthlessly. You can be handsome, caring and good on bed (the Love/Attraction side) but how financially buoyant are you to sustain a family (the Business side)? She may date you for sometime but will drop the relationship at the shortest moment when a better option shows up.
For men, please watch out for this too.
Beauty, nice shapes - bumbum and boobs, caring, respectful, God-fearing etc is the Love side. Unfortunately most men are totally satisfied with it.
The Business side? By associating with her, what do you benefit from her? How does associating with her rubs positively on you?
Good examples -
A lady working high class jobs at LNG, Mobil, Nigeria Bewery etc that dating and marrying her gives you connections to contracts, helps you recruit your brothers or friends into these organisations because she is part of the HR or knows someone there.
Dating and marrying high status men's daughters like senators, governors, corporate top dogs daughters that associating with these ladies helps and makes your journey in life softer. I can explain on this later.
I am tired of seeing men working themselves up a bit all just to come back to Nigeria to pick a broke poor lady, regularly pulling broke ladies up and her family but when the tidy turns, the lady won't hesitate to leave

you are actually the one at fault here imho - because you have chosen to outsource everything related to the children to your wife., how often do you go grocery shopping? do you take the children with you when you do this? do you go with them to school to buy books or school uniform? why would you give your wife the money to pay for school fees when you can do this yourself?
how often do your children come to disturb you about an assignment they have to do, or worn out shoes or bag, etc? do you pay attention? do you buy your kids school supplies, or clothes? do you know what they are into? do they ever come to talk to you about anything? you have to actively build a relationship with your children, and the earlier you do it the better
if you have decided to play the role of an atm only dont be surprised that that is what you are seen as. you can complain that women manipulate children against their fathers - but lazy men walk right into it when they completely remove themselves from any part of running the home/ family.
but this is not tensas story. tensa's story is one of active indifference by his father. there is no need to pretend that being a father automatically conveys a sense of responsibility onto an individual. you have to actively be a part of your children's lives on every level.
children can also see when their parents are struggling, even if they don't fully understand at the time.
thats why you hear people say - our parents did the best they could. tensa is saying - his dad did not do that. his dad did nothing.
So much wisdom in this. Fatherly responsibilities go beyond money. Even without the were withal to handle things financially, you can still get involved in the other aspects of their lives. I totally understand and empathize Tensazangetsu20. Fine you no get money no mean say you no go still dey involved.
