A bill seeking to strip Vice Presidents, Governors and Deputy Governors of immunity has ed second reading at the House of Representatives.

The bill was one of the 42 considered and ed through the second reading stage during Wednesday’s plenary session, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu.

Sponsored by Rivers lawmaker Solomon Bob, the bill is seeking the amendment of Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution to guide against abuse of office and to ensure transparency in governance.

resident Bola Tinubu has signed the South-west Development Commission (SWDC) Bill and South-south Development Commission (SSDC) Bill into law.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, disclosed this during plenary on Tuesday.

With the president’s assent to the two bills, all six geo-political zones now have dedicated development commissions.

“Just to inform distinguished senators that Mr President has assented to the remaining regional development bills, the South-west Development Commission Bill and the South-south Development Commission Bill. We now have all the developmental commissions legally in existence,” Mr Akpabio said.

The Senate also commended President Tinubu for g the bills establishing the commissions into law.

The established regional commissions are tasked with enhancing infrastructure, economic growth, and social welfare within their respective regions.

Mr Akpabio expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his cooperation with the National Assembly.

He said the commissions would create more jobs for Nigerians and facilitate grassroots development.

“We thank the president. We are grateful for his cooperation. We are grateful for creating jobs. We are also grateful to have taken development to the grassroots level,” he added.

Legislative journey of the Development Commission Bills
The SWDC Bill was ed by the Senate in September 2024 with majority before being transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence. It was sponsored by Ogun East Senator, Gbenga Daniel.

Similarly, the SSDC Bill was ed in October 2024 and forwarded to the House of Representatives. The bill was sponsored by Cross-River South Senator, Asuquo Ekpenyong.

These new commissions the North-west Development Commission (NWDC) and the South-east Development Commission (SEDC), both of which were signed into law by President Tinubu in July 2024. Their respective boards have since been constituted and confirmed by the Senate.

The NWDC was sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, while the SEDC was sponsored by Deputy Speaker, Ben Kalu.
Presidency applauds legislation
Basheer Lado, the special adviser to the President on Senate Matters, commended President Tinubu’s leadership in g the regional development bills and the Nigeria Anti-Doping Bill 2025.

Mr Lado, a former Kano Central senator between 2011 to 2015, described the move as a demonstration of the istration’s commitment to inclusive governance and national development.

The presidential aide commended his principal in a statement issued shortly after the senate president announced the president’s assent.

“These landmark legislations are a clear reflection of President Tinubu’s relentless commitment to inclusive governance, equitable progress, and Nigeria’s emergence as a global powerhouse. His Excellency has once again demonstrated that leadership is not merely about policies—it is about impact, legacy, and a deep-rooted dedication to uplifting every citizen.

“By g into law the establishment of the South-west and South-south Development Commissions, President Tinubu has reaffirmed his role as a transformational leader who prioritises regional empowerment, economic expansion, and infrastructural excellence.

“Building on the foundation of his earlier assent to the South-east and South-west Development Commissions, it is evident that President Tinubu is deliberate in bringing development across all regions.

“These commissions will serve as catalysts for industrial growth, job creation, and social advancement—ensuring that every corner of Nigeria benefits from his istration’s progressive vision. The presidential aide also noted that the Anti-Doping Bill before lawmakers aligns with global sports ethics by domesticating the UNESCO International Convention Against Doping in Sports.

“In the same vein, the Nigeria Anti-Doping Bill, 2025 is yet another bold step that solidifies Nigeria’s commitment to fairness, excellence, and integrity in global sports. The Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria has kicked against the sale of petroleum products in the Nigerian market in dollars by Dangote Refinery.

National President of PETROAN, Billy Gillis-Harry, made this known on Tuesday in a statement.

His comment comes as Dangote Refinery on Wednesday last week decided to suspend petroleum product sales in Naira.

Dangote Refinery follows the statement in discussion regarding the continuation of the Naira-for-crude sale policy with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

Reacting, Gillis-Harry said petrol product sales in dollars would have an adverse impact on Nigeria’s economy because they would result in undue pressure on the Naira at the foreign exchange market.

He urged the federal government to ensure that all petroleum products sales within the country were done in Naira.

“We oppose the sale of petroleum products or any other products within Nigeria in dollars.

While the face-off between Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara escalated, Tinubu revealed that he felt disturbed and needed to take immediate actions to quell the crisis, which he said was depriving the citizens of Rivers the dividends of democracy.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, in response to comments from former President Olusegun Obasanjo regarding the refineries’ rehabilitation on Thursday.

According to NNPC, the rehabilitation of the 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt and Warri refineries exceeds traditional Turnaround Maintenance (TAM), representing a full revamp to meet global standards.

Obasanjo had expressed doubts about the operational status of the rehabilitated Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. He referenced advice from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which reportedly questioned the viability of the Port Harcourt Refinery due to alleged corruption.

In response, Soneye emphasized that the revamping of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries was a notable achievement under the leadership of NNPC Ltd and that similar rehabilitation efforts are underway at the second Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery.

He reaffirmed NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to restoring and maintaining the refineries to global standards for sustainable operations.

Soneye further extended an invitation to former President Obasanjo to visit the rehabilitated refineries and observe the progress firsthand.

“We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to us in this historic journey.

“His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance, which will always be welcomed and cherished.

A popular Islamic scholar and renowned preacher, Sheikh Muhydeen Ajani Bello, has ed away at the age of 84 years.

Sheikh Akewugbagold Taofeek, an Ibadan-based cleric, disclosed the demise of the fearless Oyo state-born preacher in a Facebook post on Friday.

According to Akewugbagold, the renowned preacher returned to his creator on Friday, praying that God be pleased with his soul.

“Today is one of my saddest days ! My father and mentor, has returned to his creator. SULTONUL WAHIZEEN of Yorubaland Sheikh muhyideen AJANI BELLO,may Allah be pleased with your soul. Likewise, his son, Alh Basit Olanrewaju Katibi Bello, popularly known as Aponle Anobi, confirmed the demise of the renowned scholar in a social media post on Friday.

The Abuja Division of the Appeal Court has sacked Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo from the position of the National President of the National Union of Roads Transport Workers, NURTW.

The court also affirmed Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as the authentic President of NURTW.

The court also affirmed the judgment of the Industrial Court delivered on the 11th of March 2024 in respect of Suit No. NICN/ABJ/263/2023.

The court held that the appeal filed by Najeem Usman Yasin, Tajudeen Agbede and others challenging the decision of the Industrial Court that recognised Baruwa as President lacked merits and therefore dismissed it.

In a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement with Appeal No. CA/ABJ//CV/293/2024 delivered on Friday, by a three-member ; Justice Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Okwy Dimgba and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi said Baruwa is the legally elected President of NURTW.

The appellate court also awarded the sum of N100,000 against the Appellant in favour of the Respondents.

MC Oluomo was recently elected and sworn in as the National President of the Union.

But, Baruwa described MC Oluomo’s action as blatant disregard and disrespect for the rule of law and an affront to the judiciary.

Baruwa disclosed this during a press conference in Abuja.

Charles Udeogaranya, former All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, has described President Bola Tinubu’s representation at the Arab-Islamic Summit as a gross violation of the Nigerian Constitution.

Vanguard reports that Udeogaranya argued that Nigeria is a secular state, asserting that Tinubu has committed an impeachable offense.

According to him, the President swore to uphold the constitution, emphasizing that Nigeria is neither an Arab nation nor an Islamic nation.

“To, therefore, unilaterally drag Nigeria into Arab and Islamic nation’s affairs is a grievous disparaging of the Nigerian people and its Constitution,” Udeogaranya said.
He further pointed out that Nigeria is predominantly a Christian nation by religion.

The former presidential candidate underscored that such blatant disrespect and disregard for Nigeria’s true position on the international stage is most regrettable.

He advised the National Assembly to caution the President to avoid such actions, emphasizing that most Nigerians are Christians and that Nigerians firmly Israel in all international matters.
