funmijoyb: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I can see you follow some Esan nationalists, some Ogiamie people and others online. Nothing like Esan until they left Benin. It was a name given them for leaving. Now, no tribe is totally homogeneous. Yoruba as a name didn't even exist 350 years ago and Yoruba people of today are even more diverse genetically than most tribes: Tapa, Benin, Gbagyi, Hausa and others are all there. Yes, Yoruba now has more cultural homogeneity but largely driven by politics. Having learnt from the civil wars that devasted Yorubaland in the 18th and 19th centuries. You need to know that Benin people do not call themselves Benin. It doesn't exist as an identity. It is Ovbi-Edo. Unu no z'Edo (Edo speaker). Benin as a name was never forced on Edo and not even used traditionally by the people. Outsiders used the name in the way we call Japan or China those names. Japanese and Chinese don't call themselves those names. Oranmiyan never waged any war. He was a Benin prince via his dad, Prince Ekaladerhan/Izoduwa. All Benin wars are carefully documented in art, songs and poetry. Even those wars in which Benin suffered quite considerable losses. This is the insincerity I find in our SW people. I said I will give you 2 solid places in SW verifiably founded by Benin people, to do at your own leisure and you now shifted position. There are many more places of course. It means you are not in reality interested in the truth at all. You seem afraid to confirm the fact because it won't fit into your narrative. AutomaticMotors Gregyboy Ghostwon samuk 2 Likes 1 Share |

funmijoyb: I know we are on an anonymous forum where people can type anything, but if you are serious to know, pm me and I will give you places founded in SW by Benin people and still acknowledged by monarchs in the area till today. It's better you find out yourself. You can go, send someone or make simple phone calls to check. Don't say anyone already told you. Just appear as a curious person. funmijoyb:You did not read my submission well or if you did, you didn't reflect on it before commenting. Did anyone say he wasn't king in Ife? The attitude I see in many SW people, even in diaspora, is that of "we are more educated and we know it all. Who are these other people to have a contrary opinion? But when discussion goes deep, many quickly realise that others have not been sitting on their hands over the decades. And may be surprised to learn things they didn't even know about SW or own hometown history. Now the the question is: Oduduwa coming from the sky or migrating from Benin, or even Kogi (some Kogi people believe a Benin prince went through their land on the way to Ife), which will a discerning mind find more plausible? Without politics or doublespeak. The other one of coming from Saudi, Egypt, Lamurudu/Babylon, Khartoum abi na Gaza, mankind came out of Africa. When will we finally accept that this corner of the earth is where we have always been, with gradual movements around the area according to exigency? ![]() ![]() In Benin, virtually everyone now acknowledges that Ogisos were given heavenly origins in early days to cement their divine authority, not in literal sense. 2 Likes 1 Share |

samuk:I have said for years that unless our Yoruba people come up with a more objective and credible story on Oduduwa, objective outsiders will consider Edo version way more credible. Even by many diaspora Yoruba that were not fed on tribalism. They will seek to know what is more scientifically plausible. But I was shouted down. It's beginning to happen. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

lawani:Wrong. Ughoton/Gwatto was a port near Benin, with European documented evidence of non-Benin slaves and non-Benin slave traders operating along the route. They were described as Yoruba and Igbo slaves/traders from non-Benin territories of the empire. Who was the overlord of Lagos until late 1850s/early 1860s Eleko Dosunmu period? Some still claim Benin ed slave trade by ing Eleko Kosoko that dealt in slaves. To Benin, slave trade was a devolved matter. What of Warri ruled by Oba of Benin's son and later grandchildren from 1480? History is much wider than people know. that Oyo didn't become powerful until 1690s. By then Benin had effectively outlawed slave trade proper. At least to exclude Benin ethnic group in any form of trade in slaves with foreigners. |

An interesting piece. This again confirms that Benin Empire never had much appetite for slave trade. Of course, OP did not intend to say so. I wish more tribes followed suit early to ban slave trade. I have argued on NL for years that beginning with the rise of Oyo in about 1680/90s, slave trade volume increased. Up to about 1770s for sure. About the period that Oyabi and Alaafin Abiodun finally eliminated Bashorun Gaha. Because there are some tribes who still insist that Benin traded in slaves massively. The duration was short and in fact slave trade in Benin persons or by Benin persons was outlawed quite early. Other tribes within Benin sphere of influence reserved the right to sell or buy themselves as slaves. Ghostwon Samuk Automaticmotors Gregyboy 1 Like 1 Share |

Iamgrey5:Benin had coastal territories. In 1480 AD, Oba Olua of Benin sent his son Prince Iginuwa to become Ogiame in what is now Ewere/Warri. That new Dukedom was a way to extend Benin hegemony. Benin had access to Ohimwinhin (River Niger), Benin River, etc. The entire Bight of Benin in fact by the reign of Oba Orhogbua (1550-1578). Some Portuguese accompanied (documented) Oba Orhogbua to Lagos, Ijebu Waterside, etc, He was a sailor trained in Portugal as a Prince. Benin was first officially called a City in 1553 by the Europeans during his reign. Because it compared irably with the few places with "City Status" in the world at that time. Benin City and capital of Benin Empire had no immediate Port but Ughoton/Gwatto Port was only tens of kilometres away. Europeans used to dock at Gwatto Port and walk to Benin City. Erelu is descended from Eleko Dosunmu, who Oba of Benin opposed in favour of deposed Eleko Kosoko. She could have denied Benin initial ownership of Eko/Lagos but still decided to stick with the truth. Simply because it is the truth. Some people now claim that the Portuguese were using Benin to raid slaves up to Lagos area. Total lie. Benin had already began imperial expansion by about 1440 AD under Oba Ewuare I, decades before any Europeans set foot in these parts by about 1472. Though proper seafaring expanded under Oba Orhogbua who saw first-hand in Portugal how seafaring allowed Portugal to grow abroad. The Portuguese were able to work well with Benin for two main reasons: It was the pre-imminent empire in the area and its kings accepted Christianity first and was able to give Benin guns. European guns were only given to Christian partners as a matter of their policy back then. Gregyboy AutomaticMotors Samuk 5 Likes 2 Shares |

gregyboy:Well, their attack is because Oba's words carry a lot of weight. The more they attack, the more it keeps the discussion in the public space. What the Oba said is not different from what we have been saying on Nairaland and elsewhere for over a decade now. So you expect people whose kings a selected by bent/corrupt politicians and through bribery to know the value of royalty? Or you expect envious entities not to show their bitterness? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are some things we must surely condemn and not allow to stand for sure. But they have become very predictable. Nobody takes them seriously. I have written epistles on Oba travelling or not travelling for years here. gregyboy:@gregyboy, I commend your patience. But it seems you have to educate many generations of history twisters. Sadly, many of those arguing history thinking it is Yoruba patriotism don't know their GENUINE family history beyond 4 generations. Not to talk of history as a whole. Many are even Tapa slaves in Yoruba land originally. They are not interested in any objective discussions. Years ago, I proudly narrated my Edo and Yoruba side for all to know that I have every reason to be objective. I wanted to be a bridge builder. But for most of them only lies and bigotry will do, so na waste of time. Very sad. |

toyinid78: Omo means child in Benin, Adesuwa has nothing to do with "crown or Ade" as it is in Yoruba. An ethnic Yoruboid Edo Benin person is not representative of the regular Benin person. Please have enough understanding of Benin language and conventions before saying a name is Yoruba. An Edo person with a Yoruba mum may have a Yoruba first name. I know Benin people whose first name was given by a Yoruba or Igbo family friend or neighbour, grandfather/mother, in-law, etc. There was once a time when people related much better irrespective of tribe or religion. A lot of Benin and Igbo words are similar but I wouldn't say that one tribe or the other comes from the other. Our problem is that we are still high on the fallacy that this or that tribe came from Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc. The truth is that those Southern tribes were probably at one time together or at least very close neighbours before spreading East, West and South. Kogi/River Niger area is the most likely place where all were together. The Igbos probably migrated away first. For example, Igbo call Benin by the oldest name: Ndi Idu. Idu is considered the progenitor of Benin people. 1 Like |

rollywise:Ignorant people do not know that Benin was what Lagos is today as far back as 1500 AD. Lots of criminals like Evans the kidnapper operated in Benin before moving to Lagos. Benin has virtually every 9ja tribe in large numbers. When they hear Benin, because bigots are typically mumu people, they don't even know which name is from where. Ordinarily, it should not matter which tribe a criminal comes from, but 9ja is super tribalistic. As you can see here on Nairaland. |

Lama70:Hear this from a proud scientist here: Politics is classics and classics is politics. If you want to understand politics, understand classics and classical philosophy. No joke. Politics has little to do with the empiricism of science. Except for the logical analysis of the prevailing political circumstances that a politician must do 24/7. In fact, science that pushes one towards the truth as a habit tends to be a major hindrance in politics. That's why lawyers make top politicians. Philosophy, classics, logic and rhetoric are vital parts of law. 1 Like |

Burob: Yes, rotation. Now Edo Central should go next. Osunbor from Edo Central won in 2007 but the court overturned it in favour of Oshio. We cannot afford to greedy politicians to manufacture crisis. Let each serve their time and go. I know many would have liked Edo to vote APC in 2023 presidential but being a sophisticated place with very educated people, Edo like Lagos and Abuja voted Labour. Truly cosmopolitan places. Not tribal politics. Enlightened people don't do "Baba so pe" tribal politics. ![]() ![]() Though South South is traditionally PDP, especially as it was the only inclusive national party previously. Edo vote tactically, not blindly. Voting for presidency and governorship/LG may differ. Uniben and Unilag always led protests in Nigeria. As far back as Ali must go days. APC and PDP have lost their way. LP is being gradually taken over by political prostitutes/opportunists from APC/PDP. Something got to give soon. Ali Bongo the noisemaker should be a warning to smug politicians. When the youth finally rebel, dem go know how far. |
