This is a good one coming from FG but hope the school is well funded and managed. Majority of our schools are in bad condition.

It is a state owned university proposed by Government of Bayelsa State. It is a good idea but coming at a wrong time when the first state-owned Niger Delta University has been shutdown for more than four(4) months due to lack of funds to run the university as claimed by state government.

You can propose a new state-owned university when the existing one is totally out of use. Wrong initiative by the Bayelsa State at this time.

The National University Commission (NUC) has approved the University of Africa as the 43rd state university in the country.

The National University Commission (NUC) has approved the University of Africa as the 43rd state university in the country.

Its approval followed the formal presentation of the relevant gazette law, academic brief and physical masterplan as well as the satisfactory report of the advisory resource assessment visit by the commission.

The University of Africa is an initiative of the Bayelsa State Government, which will, however, run as a Public Private Partnership (PPP), since the state government will only provide the enabling environment, while the financing would come from the private sector.

Giving the nod, through a letter dated 28 of July 2016, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Julius Okojie, while congratulating the state government, noted that, the establishment of the university took effect from the 28th of July, having complied with the basic requirements.

According to Okojie, the University of Africa is also the 143rd in the Nigerian university system.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Bayelsa State Governor, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, yesterday and made available to the press, Governor Seriake Dickson had led a delegation of top government officials to the office of the commission in Abuja and were received by executive secretary, who briefed the governor on the latest development and the approval of the university.

The statement disclosed that, Okojie handed over the letter of approval to Dickson during the visit, as he also commended him for the initiative.

In his remarks, Dickson, while thanking the NUC Executive Secretary for the warm reception accorded him and his team, explained that, the University of Africa, Toru-Orua was conceived as a public private partnership and it is designed as a first rate institution of learning that will also attract some of the best teachers from Africa and the world.

He said the university will be funded by its partners and the government would only provide the enabling environment for its establishment.

The Bayelsa State Chief Executive said, there is need for more private universities to be established and they must be fee paying, pointing out that, it is the only way to make funding of tertiary institutions viable and sustainable.

His words “I am here leading this small delegation to present to you these laws ed by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, establishing a new university that we want to bring about working with the private sector. It will be run on a PPP basis.

It is a University unlike the existing one, it will not be directly funded by the state. Our belief is that moving forward for a university to be sustainable, we must create room for private sector participation and involvement.

The University of Africa, Toru-Orua, is the first of its kind in this country, that is established by government with private sector involvement and it will be strictly a fee paying tertiary institution that will attract students from across the continent and the globe. It will be the model as we encourage more private universities in the country”

Following the peaceful resolution of the N1.4 trillion fine saga with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), MTN Nigeria appears to be making true its pledge to list its shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in 2017.

MTN Group, in a statement yesterday, said its management has set up a task team that would advise it about the listing.

“MTN Nigeria is targeting that the listing takes place during 2017, subject to suitable market conditions, the firm stated. It has therefore appointed Stanbic IBTC Capital Limited (together with its s, The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited and Standard Advisory London Limited, collectively ‘Stanbic’) and Citigroup Global Markets Limited (Citi) as its t Transaction Advisors and t Global Coordinators, with Stanbic acting as Lead Issuing House.

“A full syndicate including Nigerian receiving agents, Nigerian receiving banks and other advisers would be appointed in due course, as appropriate,” it said.

The proposed listing, the MTN Group explained, would, however, be “subject to suitable market circumstances and conditions and the appropriate approvals from relevant regulators and other stakeholders.”

The inauguration of the management task team, it pointed out, did not constitute an announcement of an intention to float MTN Nigeria, saying further announcements would be made on this issue at appropriate intervals on progress.

At the end of negotiations last month over the crisis that trailed the fine saga, both NCC and MTN Nigeria had agreed that the company would pay only N330 billion out of........http://nextnewslive.com/mtn-to-be-listed-on-nigerian-stock-exchange-in-2017/

A Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Nigeria today declared Ali Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman of the country’s main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and sacked the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the party.

The Justice Okon Abang led court, held that every action the Makarfi led caretaker Committee had taken since it emergence through a purportedly held convention at Port Harcourt on May 21, was null and void. Justice Abang held that:

“Parties have an uncompromising duty to obey court order until it is set aside. The Lagos Division made orders on May 12 and 20, forbidding the PDP from removing the Sheriff-led Caretaker Committee. That order is still subsisting.

“Having regard to the order of the court, PDP had no lawful authority to hold the convention that led to the emergence of the Markafi-led Committee.

“The convention was unlawfully held and the Caretaker Committee was unlawfully and illegally appointed and could not take any legal decision for the PDP in view of the subsisting order of the Lagos Division of this court.

“Consequently, any action taken by the Markafi-led Committee, including the purported mandate for legal representation in this matter is hereby declared illegal.

“If the Markafi-led Caretaker Committee, as apostles of impunity, missed their way to the Port Harcourt division of this court, that court could not have conveniently assumed jurisdiction to set aside the earlier decision of the Lagos Division.

“I hold that the Port Harcourt division of this court cannot make an order to neutralise the potency of the Lagos Division of this court dated 12 and 20 May“.

Justice Abang said he would have voided the judgment of the Port Harcourt Division for being a nullity, assuming there was an application to that effect.

He warned politicians not to cause disaffection among judges of the High Court, saying “the culture of impunity must stop in this country”.

“Ali Modu Sheriff is the National Chairman of the PDP. Any decision not taken by the Sheriff-led Committee is not binding on the PDP”.

Recall, the Ali Modu Sherriff led faction of the PDP had on July 20 filed an interlocutory application urging the court to stop the party from going ahead with the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the PDP who had on July 14 announced August 17 as the date for the party’s national convention to elect its national officers.

President of United States of America, Usain Barack Obama has begged voters to continue his legacy and trust build on him to heer Hillary Clinton to victory at the polls come November, 2016.

President Obama made the plead while addressing party ers at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia. He said US voters were faced with a task to chose between hope and fear and showered praises on Mrs Hillary Clinton describing her the most qualified person ever to run for the White House. Read full speech text below:

“Hello, America! Hello, Democrats! So 12 years ago tonight I addressed this convention for the very first time. You met my two little girls , Malia and Sasha, now two amazing young women who just fill me with pride.

“You fell for my brilliant wife and partner, Michelle who has made me a better father and a better man , who has gone on to inspire our nation as first lady and who somehow hasn’t aged a day .

“I know, the same cannot be said for me. My girls remind me all the time. Wow, you ‘ve changed so much, daddy. And then they try to clean it up. Not bad, just more mature. And it’s true, I was so young that first time in Boston.

“And look , I ‘ll it it , maybe I was a little nervous addressing such a big crowd. But I was filled with faith; faith in America, the generous, bighearted, hopeful country that made my story, that made all of our stories possible.

“A lot ‘ s happened over the years. And while this nation has been tested by war and it ‘ s been tested by recession and all manner of challenges , I stand before you again tonight, after almost two as your president, to tell you I am even more optimistic about the future of America than ever before .

“How could I not be , after all that we ‘ve achieved together? After the worst recession in 80 years, we ‘ve fought our way back. We ‘ ve seen deficits come down , 401 (k )s recover , an auto industry set new records, unemployment reach eight-year lows, and our businesses create15 million new jobs .

“After a century of trying, we declared that health care in America is not a privilege for a few , it is a right for everybody.

“After decades of talk , we finally began to wean ourselves off foreignoil , we doubled our production of clean energy. We brought more of our troops home to their families, and we delivered justice to Osama bin Laden.

“Through diplomacy, we shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program, we opened up a new chapter with the people of Cuba, brought nearly 200 nations together around a climate agreement that could save this planet for our children.

“We put policies in place to help students with loans, protect consumers from fraud, cut veteran homelessness almost in half. And through countless acts of quiet courage, America learned that love has no limits , and marriage equality is now a reality across the land .

“By so many measures, our country is stronger and more prosperous than it was when we started. And through every victory and every setback, I ‘ve insisted that change is never easy, and never quick; that we wouldn’t meet all of our challenges in one term, or one presidency, or even in one lifetime.

“So tonight, I’m here to tell you that yes, we ‘ve still got more work to do. More work to do for every American still in need of a good job or a raise, paid leave or a decent retirement; for every child who needs a sturdier ladder out of poverty or a world-class education ; for everyone who has not yet felt the progress of these past seven-and-a-half years. We need to keep making our streets safer and our criminal justice system fairer; our homeland more secure, and our world more peaceful and sustainable for the next generation.

“We ‘ re not done perfecting our union , or living up to our founding creed that all of us are created equal, all of us are free in the eyes of God.

“And that work involves a big choice this November. I think it’s fair to say, this is not your typical election. It’ s not just a choice between parties or policies, the usual debates between left and right. This is a more fundamental choice about who we are as a people, and whether we stay true to this great American experiment in self- government

“Look , we Democrats have always had plenty of differences with the Republican Party, and there’s nothing wrong with that. it’s precisely this contest of ideas that pushes our country forward.

“But what we heard in Cleveland last week wasn’t particularly Republican and it sure wasn’t conservative. What we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other and turn away from the rest of the world. There were no serious solutions to pressing problems , just the fanning of resentment and blame and anger and hate. And that is not the America I know

“The America I know is full of courage and optimism and ingenuity. The America I know is decent and generous. Sure, we have real anxieties about paying the bills and protecting our kids, caring for a sick parent. We get frustrated with political...........

Former US President gave a lengthy speech about his wife, at the Democratic National Convention saying his wife is the best thing to have happened to him. Read full speech below:

“In the spring of 1971, I met a girl. The first time I saw her, we were, appropriately enough, in a class on political and civil rights. She had thick blond hair, big glasses. Wore no makeup. And she exuded this strength of self-possession I found magnetic.

“After the class, I followed her out, intending to introduce myself. I got close enough to touch her back, but I couldn’t do it. Somehow, I knew this would not be just another tap on the shoulder, that I might be starting something I couldn’t stop. I saw her several more times the next few days but still didn’t speak to her. Then one night in the law library talking to a classmate who wanted me to the Yale Law Journal, he said it would guarantee me a job at a big firm or a clerkship with a federal judge. I really wasn’t interested — I just wanted to go home to Arkansas.

“Then I saw the girl again, standing at the opposite end of that long room. Finally, she was staring back at me. So I watched her. She closed her book, put it down, and started walking toward me. She walked the whole length of the library, came up to me, and said, “Look, if you are going to keep staring at me, we at least ought to know each other’s name. I’m Hillary Rodham, who are you?” I was so impressed and surprised that, whether you believe it or not, momentarily, I was speechless.

“Finally, I sort of blurted out my name and we exchanged a few words, and she went away. Well, I didn’t the Law Review, but I did leave that library with a whole new goal in mind. A couple days later, I saw her again, wearing a long, white, flowery skirt, and I went up to her and she said she was going to for classes for the next term. I said I would go too.

“We stood in line and talked — you had to do that to back then. I thought I was doing pretty well until we got to the front of the line and the registrar looked up and said, “Bill, what are you doing here?

“You ed this morning.” I turned red and she laughed that big laugh of hers and I thought, well, heck, since my cover has been blown, I asked her to take a walk down to the art museum. We have been walking, and talking, and laughing together ever since. And we have done it in good times, through joy and heartbreak. We cried together this morning on the news that our good friend and a lot of your good friend, Mark Weiner, ed away early this morning. We built up a lifetime of memories.

“After the first month and that first walk, I drove her home to Park Ridge, Illinois, to meet her family and see the town where she grew up, a perfect example of post-World War II middle-class America. Street after street of nice houses, great schools, good parks, a big public swimming pool. And almost all white.

“I really liked her family, her crusty, conservative father, her rambunctious brothers, all extolling the virtue of rooting for the bears and the cubs. And for the people of Illinois here, they even told me what waiting for next year meant — could be next year, guys.

“Now, her mother was different. She was more liberal than the boys. She had a childhood that made mine look like a piece of cake. She was easy to underestimate with her soft manner and she reminded me all over again of the truth of that old saying that you should never judge a book by its cover. Knowing her was one of the greatest gifts Hillary ever gave me.

“I learned that Hillary got her introduction to social justice through her Methodist youth minister, Don Jones. He took her downtown to Chicago to hear Martin Luther King Jr. speak and he remained her friend for the rest of his life. This will be the only campaign of hers he ever missed.

“When she got to college, her opposition to the Vietnam War compelled her to change parties and become a Democrat. And then between college and law school, on a total lark, she went alone to Alaska and spent time sliming fish.

“More to the point, by the time I met her she had already been involved in the law school’s legal services project and she had been influenced by Marian Wright Edelman. She took a summer internship interviewing workers in migrant camps for Sen. Walter Mondale’s subcommittee. She had also begun working in the Yale New Haven hospital to develop procedures to handle suspected child abuse cases.

“She got so involved in children’s issues that she actually took an extra year in law school working at the child studies center to learn what more could be done to improve the lives and futures of poor children. She was already determined to figure out how to make things better.

“Hillary opened my eyes to a whole new world of public service by private citizens. In the summer of 1972, she went to Dothan, Alabama, to visit one of those segregated academies that enrolled over a half a million white kids in the South. The only way the economics worked was if they claimed federal tax exemptions to which they were not legally entitled.

“She got sent to prove they weren’t. So she sauntered into one of these academies all by herself, pretending to be a housewife that just moved to town and needed to find a school for her son. And they exchange pleasantries and finally, she said, “Look, let’s get to the bottom line. If I enroll my son in this school, will he be in a segregated school? Yes or no?” And the guy said “Absolutely.” She had him. I’ve seen it a thousand times since.

“And she went back and her encounter was part of a report that gave Marian Wright Edelman the force they needed to keep working to get the Nixon istration to take those tax exemptions away and give our kids access to an equal education.

“Then she went down to South Texas, where she met one of the nicest fellows I ever met, the wonderful union leader Franklin Garcia, and he helped her Mexican American voters. I think some of them are still around to vote for her in 2016.

“And then, in our last year in law school, Hillary kept up this work. She went to South Carolina to see why so many young African-American boys — Imean, young teenagers — were being jailed for years with adults in men’s prisons. She filed a report on that, which led to some changes too. Always making things better.

“Meanwhile, let’s get back to business. I was trying to convince her to marry me. I first proposed to her on a trip to Great Britain, the first time she’d ever been overseas. We were on the shoreline of this wonderful lake, Lake Ennerdale. I asked her to marry me and she said, “I can’t do it.”

“So in 1974, I went home to teach in law http://nextnewslive.com/billion-clinton-told-us-hilarys-long-history/

Reports says State governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have have agreed to ensure that Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu is removed from his position. We learnt, this was the resolve at meeting Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari had with the APC Governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja yesterday, July 26.

Governor of Imo State, Ohale Rochas Okorocha who is the Chairman of the APC Governors Forum revealed this to our correspondent immediately after the meeting. Governor Rochas said they have also decided to intervene on the lingering crisis in the National Assembly to forestall peace and unite of the party.

Nextnewslive.com in a bid to get more details on the outcome of the meeting, leant that, the governors expressed their dismay over Ike Ekweremadu’s deputy senate president role from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and agreed to do everything within their reach to push him out of the office.

“The governors sympathised with the President (Buhari) for working with a National Assembly that is largely seen as unfriendly.

“Particularly, they observed that in the absence of the President of the Senate, the next person is his deputy. They therefore agreed that it was an anomalous situation for a PDP person to continue as the Deputy President of the Senate.

“They sought and got the President’s permission to intervene in the matter in their own way.

“They argued that the truth of the matter is that rarely is there any Senator that emerged without the backing of their governors, hence the governors have some levels of influence on the federal lawmakers.”

Meanwhile, chairman of the APC governors forum, Rochas Okorocha had earlier restated their stance on battling Senator Ekweremadu out of office and be should ready to be replaced by Benjamin Uwajumogu, who won the last Saturday’s senatorial rerun in Imo State.

“The position of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President is at the moment under heavy threat because in no distant time, the APC senator-in-waiting from Imo State, Benjamin Uwajumogu, will take over the seat on the grounds that it is an aberration that a PDP senator from the South-East is deputy to an APC Senate President because, before now, APC could not produce a Senator from the South-East zone.” said Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Nextnewslive.com further gathered, the highpoint of Tuesday’s meeting with President Mohammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa Abuja, was the approval of N2bn each to all APC states to help sort some problems facing them in the harsh economic period.

SYLVA SAYS BAYELSA ELECTION TRIBUNAL IS BIASED

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Mr. Timipre Sylva, have vowed to appeal the judgment of the governorship election tribunal.

Sylva who spoke through his lawyer, Felix Okorotie, immediately after the judgment described it as a miscarriage of justice

In his reaction Media Adviser to Sylva, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, accused the tribunal justices of bias as he expressed optimism that the judgment would be overturned by the higher courts.

“This judgment cannot stand. We tested their judgment before up to the Supreme Court and we won, this very one cannot be an exception”.

The Bayelsa State Governorship Electoral Tribunal sitting in Abuja Tuesday upheld the election of Seriake Dickson as the governor of the state.

The tribunal held that from evidence adduced before it, the election of December 6, 2015 in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area was inconclusive, and was rightfully rescheduled by INEC through the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

Accordingly, the tribunal dismissed the petition filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Mr. Timipre Sylva, for lacking in merit. It held that the petitioners failed to prove the allegations of violence and non-compliance to the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The three man tribunal led by Justice Kazeem Alogba held that on the questions of non-voting and snatching of electoral materials by thugs of the PDP, the petitioners failed to substantiate the allegations.

According to the Tribunal, “allegations of acts of criminality, violence and snatching of ballot boxes, the onus of proof lies on the shoulders of the petitioners to prove beyond all reasonable doubt.

“It is trite that he who asserts must prove. The petitioners must adduced by cogent and verifiable evidence beyond reasonable doubt

“Petitioners fell short of the requirements to prove allegations of non- voting by calling only seven witnesses instead of calling witnesses from each of the polling units.

The criminal allegations were not proved by the petitioners as required by law which is beyond reasonable doubt.

The tribunal further cancelled a substantial number of forms EC8 which is the results sheets of the election on the ground that they did not contain the signatories or stamps of INEC officials as required by section 63 (2) of the Electoral Act.

“A substantial number of the results sheets tendered by the petitioners did not contained signatories and stamp of INEC officials.

The DVD tendered by the petitioners rather than help their case contradicted their evidence that the Residence Electoral Commission (REC) did not adduced reason for the cancellation of the December 6, 2015 election in Southern Ijaw.

“The REC did not unilaterally cancel the election but INEC did and gave reasons for the cancellation to include serious violence and irregularities. The REC clearly stated that election was inconclusive as a result of violence.

“To save the integrity of the process, INEC decided to cancel the election and this was clearly explained by the REC in the DVD tendered by the petitioners themselves”.

The tribunal said from the evidence before it, the December 6. 2015 governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government was inconclusive as results were not collated from the wards.

“Election is process and once any aspect of process is not completed, you cannot say that the election was completed”.

In dismissing the case, the tribunal held that the petitioners did not deserve the reliefs sought in their petition.

Tribunal verdict: My victory is for democracy, Bayelsans - Dickson

Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State had applauded the judgment of Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja which upheld his victory in the December 5 2016 governorship election describing it "a victory for democracy and Bayelsans."

The governor in a statement issued on Tuesday evening by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, also commended the judiciary "for upholding our nation’s democracy and once again acquitting itself as the bastion of our democracy."

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Timipre Sylva, had challenged the election of Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking a reversal of the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which declared him as the valid winner of the election.

But in a unanimous decision, the three-man tribunal, led by Justice Kazeem Aloba, said the APC failed woefully to prove its case. The tribunal consequently dismissed Sylva’s petition and upheld Dickson’s election as earlier declared by INEC.

The governor, according to Iworiso-Markson, praised Bayelsans for voting for him and his party on conviction and stood to protect their votes. The governor, who regretted the loss of lives and property during the election, decried the “intimidation of voters” which he regarded as a failure of institution.

Dickson, however, said that the judgement indicated that "the resolve of the people did not go in vain" as he canvassed for “greater vigilance to protect democracy” in the country.

He said, “We want to use this opportunity to thank the good people of Bayelsa State for voting en-masse for the PDP and defending their votes even in the face of such virulent intimidation and harassment. This judgement is clearly a victory for democracy and the resilient and courageous people of Bayelsa."

The governor also commended the judiciary for its role as the defender of the constitution, saying that without a fearless and independent judiciary, democracy is imperiled. According to him, it was not the election that was on trial per se but the judiciary itself, adding that the judgement of the tribunal validated the saying that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man.
