Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has said anyone who says 2023 is his turn is making a mistake.
Although Kwankwaso did not mention the name of any candidate, the context indicates that he made a veiled reference to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In the build up to the APC Primaries, Tinubu had said having assisted different persons to key positions in government, it was his turn.
The controversial remark caught headlines and trended on social media for a long time.
But speaking in Lagos on Sunday, Kwankwaso said 2023 election is going to be different.
He also asked Nigerians not to vote a candidate who is unhealthy, alleging that some persons were plotting to become president through a similar way Dr Goodluck Jonathan emerged following the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
“People are not talking about parties. They are talking about candidates and individuals. The APC and PDP have failed Nigerians. That is why we are in this mess today. I am ready for debates. Let us put our cards on the table. Some of the candidates are running away from debates. Some of them should look at themselves in the mirror and tell themselves the truth. Some of them are our seniors. You cannot cheat nature. Anybody who says 2023 is his turn is making a huge mistake.”
“In 2007, Yar’Adua was nominated as PDP candidate without consultation. There was no serious consultation. We knew things but there was no consultation and so we ran into trouble (with Yar’Adua’s ill health, attendant controversies, and using doctrine of necessity to swear in Dr Goodluck Jonathan as acting president, and his death). Today, that episode is recurring. Some people thought by becoming vice president they would soon be president.”
Kwankwaso also vowed not to step down for anyone, outlining how he intends to fight insecurity, boost the economy, and improve education if he is elected.
“The reports of my stepping down are coming from detractors who go about concocting stories to suit their mind. Anybody who thinks of stepping down at this stage is not fair to himself because the time for merger, alliances, etc, has gone. NNPP is all out to win the 2023 elections. The other parties are going down in of and popularity and there is nothing any of them can do to stop this misfortune.
“NNPP is the only party growing now and the growth will continue as the 2023 polls approach. The other parties have nothing to say again. I was a founding member of the PDP, which was formed to kick the military out of power. There was no ideology behind the formation of PDP other than kicking the military out.
“After kicking out the military, we realised our differences. It was one of the reasons I lost re-election as Kano governor in 2003. So we have to think of getting a progressive party, and five of us, PDP governors, had to move and in forming APC. We also realised that APC has issues and our expectations were dashed. We decided to form a party of like minds. However, when the INEC refused to our party, we looked around and found NNPP. It meets our beliefs and ideology. We are happy that we left APC and PDP and ed NNPP.
Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has given a hint of who he will . Speaking during the commissioning of the Nkpolu-Oroworokwo flyover which he invited the Labour Party candidate to commission, Wike said those fighting Obi are doing so because of bad belle.
Obi worked very well in Anambra; those fighting you are envying you and it is "bad belle".
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi on Tuesday, said he did his little as governor of Anambra State and urged the incumbent governor, Chukwuma Soludo to do his best in the state as an economics professor.
Obi stated this at the 2022 Lagos Business School (LBS) Alumni Conference in Lagos.
The Anambra governor between 2006 and 2014 was reacting to Soludo’s comments that the investment he (Obi) left in government is worth close to nothing.
Also, Soludo on Monday had tackled Obi, saying he can’t win the 2023 presidential election.
Soludo Remains My Brother
Reacting on Tuesday in Lagos, Obi described Soludo as his brother.
“He (Soludo) remains my brother, we are very close. I remain prayerful for him. For other things which I didn’t succeed, God has given him opportunity to do it and succeed.
"So, if there is anything pending, governance doesn’t finish, people are still in government in America, so you stop where you will stop, other people will continue from there,” Obi said.
"He is the governor of the state; he is my senior brother, he is even more intelligent than me because he is a professor, I am a trader, so he knows more and will be able to do things better than I am doing it.
“I have done my little own as a trader, now the professor is there he will do his own as a professor, the schools I didn’t roof he will roof them, that’s how government goes.”

Indomie people generation...you better go read history
You must be very stupid with your statement. I said what I said because I know more than you in ways you could ever think of. I am sure you were a baby when in 1999 OBJ became president and we were part of the process. So next time you want to make comment, think very well
Pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, has said that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is the most sellable of those vying for the presidency in the 2023 elections.
Ribadu, who doubles as the Director of Stakeholder Relations for the Presidential Campaign Council, stated this at the official inauguration of the 132-member directorate of the APC PCC.
This was as he warned the party not to underrate the candidates of other political parties ahead of the 2023 elections.
Ribadu expressed optimism that the February 25 poll would be a walkover for the former Lagos State Governor.
The inauguration ceremony, which took place at the PCC campaign office in Abuja, was officiated by former Osun State Governor and APC founding national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande.
While stating that Tinubu would sweep the presidential election going by the level of grassroots work done so far, the former anti-corruption agency boss also cautioned that no candidate should be taken for granted.
He said, “We should not underrate our opponents. We should work assiduously to make the margin of winning too wide that the victory will be massive and sweet.

He said, “We should not underrate our opponents. We should work assiduously to make the margin of winning too wide that the victory will be massive and sweet.
“Luckily for us, our job is cut out for us. We have the most sellable product in the market today. There is no one candidate out there that is better than our own.
“Asiwaju Tinubu is an accomplished human being and a thorough bred and maverick politician. He has something to show from his glowing antecedent, he will not learn on the job.
“He also has a wide network of friends and associates everywhere in Nigeria, which makes our job of outreach very much easier. Though this election is literally a walk over for us, we should not leave anything to chances.”
While charging the 132 of the directorate to work harmoniously as one family in an atmosphere of cordiality, Ribadu explained that they were drawn from various field of human endeavours.
Ribadu added that he had no doubt that the directorate would deliver the goods ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
"To ease operation, we have decided to divide the operations of the directorate into North and South. This is done to ensure that our work is targeted and thorough.
“We are also adopting a bottom-up and up-bottom approaches simultaneously through the creation of thematic area units and leadership at zonal and state levels.
“The work will be guided with clear of reference to guide our operations and assigned tasks. Immediately after this formal event, we will discuss in detail and provide you with the necessary guidance to hit the ground running.”
Midway through the programme, Akande disclosed that he was impressed with the composition of the new directorate.
He also believed they would continue with the victory of the ruling party from where they stopped in May 29, 2015.
This is even as he expressed confidence that Tinubu has what it takes to ister the country despite the aversion of some Nigerians to the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket.
A Federal High Court sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State has sacked Senator Emmanuel Bwacha representing Taraba South for defecting to the All Progressives Congress.
Delivering the judgement in a suit marked FHC/JAL/CS/9/2022 brought before the court by the Peoples Democratic Party, Justice Simon Amobeda ordered Bwacha to immediately vacate his seat as a Senator.
The judgement delivered, on Thursday, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent on Friday ruled that the first defendant (Emmanuel Bwacha) by defecting from the plaintiff (PDP) to the second defendant (APC) during the life of the senate to which he was elected in the 2019 general election, lost his seat of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Citing section 68(1) (g) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, the judge held that the plaintiff successfully established his case and is therefore entitled to the grant of the reliefs sought.
Part of the judgement read, “the 4th defendant (The Senate President) shall immediately declare as vacant the seat of the 1st defendant in the Senate of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The 3rd Defendant (Independent National Electoral Commission) shall immediately conduct a bye-election among the candidates that contested the 2019 general elections for Taraba South Senatorial District of Taraba State.
“Leave is hereby given to the plaintiff to present another candidate to fill the vacancy created by the 1st defendant’s defection to the 2nd defendant not later than 90 days from the date of this judgement,” the judgement read.
This is even as the court restrained Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, his agents or privies from accessing allowances due to the occupant of the seat until a winner emerged from the election to be conducted.
