The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has warned leaders of the All Progressives Congress at both national and state levels against factions and imposing unpopular candidates as the 2023 general election approaches.

The president gave the warning at the 11th meeting of the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday in Abuja.

This is as the party reached agreements on the form it would use to select a presidential candidate and other matters relating to the 2023 general election.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, on Monday, gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, within which he should resign as a Minister in the Federal Executive Council or the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should sack him.

The NYCN alleged that Amaechi danced on the graves of victims and celebrated the pains of the abducted and wounded for declaring his presidential ambition on a day he was to meet Nigerian youths on the implication of the March 28 attack on an Abuja-Kaduna train.

“Consequently, to demonstrate that there is a modicum of sanity in this country and the minutest respect for the lives of citizens, the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, should resign within the next 48 hours or President Muhammadu Buhari should sack him as a mark of respect for the dead, who he deliberately or unwittingly desecrated.

“We hereby a vote of confidence on the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces’ determination to rein in insecurity and in a similar vein frown at the attempts by the Minister of Transportation to discredit the President Muhammadu Buhari istration,” the NYCN said.

The President of NYCN, Solomon Adodo, issued the ultimatum in a communiqué issued after its emergency meeting held on Monday in Abuja.

The meeting was to lend its voice to the security situation in Nigeria and proffer some solutions and advice, particularly with respect to the recent bombing of the Abuja-Kaduna rail track.

Reactions have continued to trail the declaration of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to run for the presidency in the 2023 general election.

One of such reactions was by a Twitter , @NaikeyOnuegbu, who slammed Osinbajo for declaring his intention on the “same Twitter that they banned.”

She tweeted, “On this same Twitter that they banned, they’re all coming to declare to run for (the) office of (the) President…The irony!”

Another , @Krisdangis, asked in a direct response to the VP’s series of tweets: “On this same @Twitter you banned last year…”

The Federal Government officially banned Twitter in Nigeria on June 5, 2021, after the platform took down a tweet by the President, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), which it claimed violated its community rules.

Condemnations and outrage followed the FG’s ban on Twitter from local and international bodies and organisations, with many, including Amnesty International, maintaining that it was an attack on freedom of expression.

During the period of its suspension, many Twitter s in Nigeria resorted to using Virtual Private Networks to boycott the ban and to continue to have access to the social media platform.
