With steady, consistent stewardship we can get out of this mess. The above is not a measure of development it's just a gauge of financial stability or prospect.

It's just like the case of Greece some years ago where they could no longer finance their so called "developed" standard of living causing the Chinese to bail them out. China now holds Greece by the balls (china owns most of Greece's main port)

Or currently Lebanon where the government borrowed most of the country's depositors' funds and simply defaulted (imagine a government default on bonds)

we are not there yet and hopefully won't get there we still have some serious shock absorbers in our economy and besides we are not too entangled in the global financial system like that. God save us sha.

bull shit by a government apologist,do you know what is called comparative advantage, nigeria has comparative advantage in oil,it should benefit
The problem of subsidy is because of lazy, dubious , corrupt inept government who could not have refining capacity in the country and you want to shift that to the people, your argument is dubious, compare apple with Apple, this west African countries example is wack,as for the smuggling what is the customs there for and whose job is it to see they are efficient at their job,you now transfer the burden of custom failure to Nigerians, the government should do their job that is why they are elected, what stops the government from exploring the lucrative west African or African markets by exporting refined products there and earn additional forex
Government have no excuse not to do their job of improving people's welfare
I think I get your argument even though it is disted.

1. How are my a government apologist when government is arguing for controlled deregulation (maintaining regulation) and I am arguing for total deregulation? I am against the government on this one.

2. For the African example you claim wack, hows that? Is it the prices of our neighbours that are at least twice our price? or is it the fact that you and I know that our borders aer as porous as a basket? especially the northern ones.

3. I agree with you government need to cater for the welfare of its citizens, but we are not discussing what ought to be but rather what is. and the reality is many people are feeding fat on regulation at the expense of the country.

You may not know but I can tell you for a certainty that 10 million litres of our so called 60+million daily local fuel consumption is actually taken outside Nigeria - to our neighbours (PPRA observedthis drop when borders were shut). with landing cost averaging 180/liter in September 2019. Nigeria was basically throwing 2billion naira daily subsidising smuggled fuel (in a month that's 60 billion)

if you are ok with this, I am not.

Some people will still wail at this, it's the normal when the price is completely deregularised, international price dictates the local price. But government will have to still be proactive so those evil marketers will always adjust accordingly as at when due, if not they will be forming a kind of association that will see to them rapping off the masses. A typical example is, we might not have downward review of price locally in months if international price is down for months but on the other way round the moment price jumped up, you start to see the effect locally even before that increase. That is how devilish we are in this country. Greed is in the blood.
Diesel is fully deregularised and no price has dropped not even one Naira since Crude has been cheaper than a paint of Garri. Those evil marketers are cashing out and may not tamper with the price until may be when government decides to challenge them to drop the price. We are just like that, bleeped up greedy people.
Your point is valid. But that is the short term you are looking at.

In the long term after prices go up and these "evil marketers" increase their prices locally, this create incentives for others to invest in the IMPORTATION of fuel in the downstream sector as there is profit to be made, healthy competition then sets in driving prices downwards.
In the short run you described above, govt through the NNPC stations can keep the marketers honest by selling at a lower price before the long run adjustments

what rubbish! still speaking of price modulation mechanisms and liberalisation in same sentence?

If they want to maintain control let them do it and if they want to deregulate let them but they cant eat their cake and still have it.

PREVIOUSLY (covid reality)
Currently market fundamentals (prominent ones: low demand, over supply of crude) has meant the cost buildup of PMS /petrol is low hence the low pump price. When crude goes up and demand picks up again pump price will rise. Theoretically government cushion the effect of this rise on the masses by asking us to pay max 145 naira while it pays whatever balance is above that - that's the idea of subsidy.

A noble idea no doubt, but one fraught with dubious practices:

1. All the countries surrounding Nigeria sell PMS more than double that of Nigeria
Benin PMS 337.8 approx.
Niger PMS 337.8 approx.
Chad PMS 329.6 approx.
Cameron PMS 395.5
The above means there is every incentive to smuggle PMS out of Nigeria (why sell in 9ja for 145 when you can sell at 395 in Cameron). In essence we are subsidising WA

2. Lack of transparency (Forex) means, we have to believe what ever NNPC tells us it imports PMS for (NNPC is currently the sole importer). Government officials in nigeria are not known to put interest of the country first when it comes to procurement. what you can buy at X naira privately might cost Nigerian government 3X + 2 naira!

CURRENTLY (what is being suggested by PPRA)
They are recommending price be modulated (regulated) to the extent which CBN determines (indirectly), depending on the volume of forex it makes available to marketers and the rate which it (CBN) sets, the PPRA will fix a monthly price band.
Like always it is a good idea theoretically but make no mistake it would be exploited in Nigeria

WAYOUT
Complete financial and operational deregulation of the downstream let government be a player (important at a and sell at a loss, that's its business) but let the players source their forex, source their products and sell at their price. Initially it might hurt a bit due to adjustments in the market but in the long run it pays off.

1. Although dollars may become expensive initially but some of these multinationals can leverage on their parent or exploration companies to source forex saving govt the stress.

2. It save us billions we previously spend on subsidy for the whole of West Africa, since all our neighbours sell at least 2 time our pumpprise smugglers profit from selling Nigerian fuel outside Nigeria.

3. AGO (diesel) is fully deregulated. we can see that supply has been constant and price has naturally fluctuated between a bearable 160 to 290 over the last 2years, depending on market fundamentals

Abeg I cant talk again.

I never liked him myself maybe due to the vile and negative media he got. But one lesson I have learnt from his ordeal is: pray you are never misunderstood or falsely accused by the public and if you find yourself in such position stick to your principles and don't try to please the public. Ultimately the truth always prevails.

Geoffrey Onyeama April 19, 2020 - Tribute to Kyari: The Best Man

I first met Abba Kyari in 1977 at Warwick University in England. I had gone there to do law as a second first degree. He had come to do a degree in sociology. I had a pending application to do Law at Cambridge and when the result of that application came and it was positive, I left Warwick during the second semester.
But my five months at Warwick was enough to build a strong friendship with Abba that lasted till his ing. Almost 43 years!

There was a small group of Nigerians at Warwick then, which included former President Yakubu Gowon (who was doing a PhD in Political Science) ; Senator Osereihmi Osunbor (former Senator and Governor); Sitonye Roy Wakama (former Deputy Inspector General of Police) and the lawyer, Desmond Guobadia.
There were a few other Nigerians.

Abba was quite skinny in those days! We became friends very quickly and a life-long bond was formed.

Abba was very simple and humble. He was also very friendly with everyone. He had very litte interest in material things. We had a common interest in politics and I believe it was our socialist political values that cemented our friendship because we were always discussing politics and how to salvage Nigeria right up to his ing.

Abba was also surprisingly sociable for someone who was so self-effacing and we
had a lot of enjoyable and memorable experiences at parties and discotheques! Abba also had a very good sense of humour belied by his often stern visage.
When I left Warwick University for Cambridge, Abba came to Cambridge to introduce me to his friends there as he had studied in the city for his Advanced levels. After graduating from Warwick University, Abba went up to Cambridge to study law. We kept in touch throughout the last 43 years. We ended up together in Lagos in 1982 to attend Law School for a year. When I left Nigeria in 1985 to work in Geneva for 30 years Abba came to Geneva often to stay with me and whenever I was in Nigeria, he made it a point of coming to see me wherever I was.

When I got married in Owo to my wife from Idoani, Ondo State, Abba was my Best-Man. The officiating Vicar was somewhat perplexed because I was a Roman Catholic Igbo, marrying an Anglican Yoruba in an Anglican church with a Muslim Kanuri/Shuwa Arab Best-Man from Borno State!
The officiating Catholic priest in Geneva, Switzerland, two years later, during the baptism of our first son, was equally perplexed when a muslim Abba Kyari and a muslim Muni Attah-Sonibare were the Godfather and Godmother respectively! Abba was a Pan-Nigerian, global citizen, who recognized no boundaries between peoples, be they racial, ethnic, religious, class or political. He made friends with everyone.

Abba was a man of unimpeachable integrity. Absolutely incorruptible! I after he got married to his wonderful wife, Kulu, he told me how he showed her his first paycheck so she would know that he was not wealthy and would not steal!
It broke my heart to see all the false allegations against him on issues of corruption. He showed me the safe in his office where he put any unsolicited gift .

I asking him about the rumours making the rounds that he was making money from the fine imposed on MTN. He immediately showed me the memorandum setting up the Committee to deal with the issue and he was not even a member. He also showed me how he had been able to block attempts by many influential and powerful persons to make a lot of money at the expense of the country. He knew that fighting corruption with such single mindedness and fearlessness would see him at the receiving end of the venom of very powerful forces but was undeterred and preferred to ignore all the defamation against him.

Abba was loyal to a fault. He decided he was going to protect his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, at all costs and would take any number of bullets for him. And he did!
Since he became Chief of Staff to the President, Abba never rested. He worked day and night, seven days a week. He was a hard taskmaster who did not suffer fools gladly. A very demanding boss. He gave a lot of himself and expected his subordinates and colleagues to do the same.
He was very intelligent, very well-read and had a wide and varied professional experience. He held strong opinions and did not yield position easily. But once he believed in someone or a cause, he would fight with everything he had.

Abba believed completely in the Nigerian project and believed completely in President Muhammadu Buhari. During the last five years he gave every second of his life for the success of both. His health suffered as a result but it was a sacrifice and investment he was happy to make. Nigerians will look back in years to come and see that he was truly the
Best Man.

Rest In Peace my brother.

SLANDER AND BACKBITING

In islam slander and backbiting are heinous crime both spiritual and temporal. The Quran compares the backbiting to the abhorrent act of eating the the flesh of ones dead brother, and the prophet (SAW) indicated that you may end up carrying the full weight of the sins of your brother by simply speaking of those sins behind his back (especially if not meant for correction).
Slander on the other hand is blatant falsehood and casting of aspersions on someone's act or intentions. It is so serious that there is a stipulated penalty for it in Islamic jurisprudence.

ELECTRONIC SLANDER AND BACKBITING

Although many are aware of the vice of slander and backbiting and we pray Allah continues to guide us in avoiding these acts. A far more dangerous strand of this act now exist with far more devastating consequence which even the most ascetic scholar is not protected from nor shielded against, let alone mere mortals like me and you: it is the -
Retweet
Forwarding
Sharing
Posting etc.
of falsehood, lies and unsubstantiated viewpoints on social media.
Everyone now has at least one form identity or the other in the cyber space via social media and these identities sometimes are even more influential than the person himself. We use these identities or handles to discuss, express, question and even promote ideas online.

A shout at the top of your voice on a balcony may reach a few tens or hundreds of people, but a tweet in the dead of the night from a handle can reach millions, some times billions of people - that is the power of social media and with more power comes more responsibility/obligations.
Sharing of falsehood on someone or group of persons on FB is slander on a titanic scale with titanic consequences. A whatsApp chat of a colleague on a subject matter he wouldn't approve (and not meant as any form of correction) is backbiting. Forwarding and Sharing "breaking news" on someone or a company which are unsubstantiated is slanderous and dangerous considering if it turns out to be false it is slander and if true it will be backbiting.

WAY OUT
I think I have done enough writing and would use the Quran and the Sunnah to give advice so that everyone can internalise the text individually. You may relate speech to posts, share, forwards in the following.

“It is enough lying for a man to speak of everything that he hears.” (Hadith - Muslim)

“O you who believe! If a Faasiq (liar — evil person) comes to you with any news, it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done” (Quran - Hujrat)

This is for those claiming he had died before yesterday. It is forbidden in Islam to keep the dead unburried.

In the state house statement, it said funeral arrangements will be announced. That will definitely be today but most likely low key burial.

If he dies, are we then immortal? hope for a good ending yourself rather than musing on that of others.

Trump is fighting a battle, the Chinese are focused on the war, and they are masters of the art of war. The Chinese have so far strategically avoided digging in on any confrontation with trump because they know life will go on even after trump. America was so involved in her old ways that they missed the rapid - though expected - rise in chinese influence.

Here are some examples:

The US's withdrawal from the 2016 Paris accord last year which it championed alongside china now means it has ceded leadership to China on global climate issues, which they gladly accepted. This means china can further deepen its ties with European nations which have traditionally dealt with China with much suspicion due to her bad record in human rights and democratic freedoms. Thanks to trump all that are now in the back burner.

Technologically the US had always lead way until recently when a fairly unknown chinese company started making waves. First Huawei became the second largest phone manufacturer in of market share overtaking Apple and just trailing behind Samsung. And with China leading US in the 5G battle America had once more ceded another vacuum for China to fill. currently Huawei is so embedded in 2 - 3 and 4G technologies across the globe (on which many 5G systems will be built) that it is practically impossible, at least in a cost effective way to ban Huawei anywhere in the world. And the American telecom giants don't have financial backing from government as their Chinese counterparts enjoy thus winning this race will be impossible.

On the halting/review of funding to the WHO by the trump istration, this will just be yet another strategic blunder the Americans will make creating another vacuum for the Chinese government with its deep pocket to fill.

Strategically Africa has no business siding with any of these two gladiators, in fact africa should reactivate the non alliance policy of the Soviet era, only focusing on strategic gains accruing to the continent from any of the two partnership.

Hey Saifullah01

Looks like they didn't add the 20%, I didn't get mine as well. I use glo too so I noticed that when you buy a new data plan without finishing the previous one, they'll simply add it to the previous one.

Since you bought 50gb, they'll put about 5gb on the night bundle then add the remaining 45gb to your previous 15gb. That's why you can see 60gb on the main bundle and 5gb below.

So it will continue counting from wherever the 15gb stopped. It's still the same since they have extended the data allocated to 60gb. It will only start from zero if you exhausted the previous data before buying another one.

Notice the "days" in your was extended too. Still on 9 and not zero.

See my own screenshot below. I hope you get it now.

Thank you for this comment. You explained what the Glo reps could not explain. I guess the 20 %they promised is audio, I had factored that into my calculation.

I have been banned since yesterday that's why I couldn't reply. Thank you to everyone who contributed
