Although many African countries are contending with funds to fight scourges like the Ebola Virus, HIV/AIDS, malaria amongst others, an investigation by National Mirror has revealed that funding for gay activities are beginning to top the priority of foreign donors.

In 2015 alone, funding for gay activities is expected to triple, with many foreign foundations coming up with donations for gay rights, in apparent reaction to the recent continent-wide criminalization of same-sex marriage in Africa.

National Mirror investigation revealed that the funds will be mostly disbursed through the International Gay and Lesbian Association, which derives funding from many multinationals and governments in Europe and America.

Some multinationals and groups fingered in the arrangement to fund gay activities include Google, Open Society Institute founded by billionaire, George Soros, Freedom House, a US-based NGO, the UK’s Sigrid Rausing Trust, Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr, Rescue Fund for Gays, Lesbians, Bisexual and Transgender, which operates from South Africa and The Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund.

Decrying the situation, a university don who went in search of grants available for human rights causes told our correspondent that the donors are beginning to divert funds meant for defence of core human rights causes to gay rights issues.

He said: “I could not believe it when I was told that the bulk of the grants being budgeted for human rights cases in Africa have been redirected to fighting for gay.

“In some instances, the grants available run into hundreds of millions of dollars, while the core human rights abuse cases have been relegated to the background.

“The implication is that human rights issues may be at the background going forward, especially in Africa.”

Investigations by our correspondent showed that some of the foundations, previously known for ing human rights issues have shifted their attention to gay rights struggle with Victory Fund’s arm in Johannesburg, South Africa earmarking a princely $250m for gay rights campaign in 2015.

It was also gathered that there are plans to incorporate an initiative called Project One Africa (after Project One America funded by Apple’s gay chief executive officer, Tim Cook), who recently committed a whopping $8.5m to the fight for gay rights from his private purse.

Already, The Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund have called for applications for grants in gay rights for 2015 which opens on January 15.

According to the report on their web page, the grant, which would be classified into two-‘Programs, Projects and Events’ (PPE) (awards up to $5,000 to the creation of programmes, projects or events that address the mission of gays and lesbians and ‘Basic Operating Grants’, which avails unrestricted operating funds to build capacity of nonprofit organisations specifically serving Charlotte’s gay community, especially in Africa.

The role of the European Union in protecting gay rights only came to the fore recently, when Russia in a report accused it of pushing a far-left ideology of sexual libertinism that is at odds with the culture of most member states.

The Russian report said: “The European Union and its member states consider, as one of their priorities, the dissemination of their neoliberal values as a universal lifestyle for all other of the international community.

“Attempts have been made to enforce on other countries an alien view of homosexuality and samesex marriages as a norm of life and some kind of a natural social phenomenon that deserves at the state level.”

Homosexual activities in many countries in Africa attract a jail term of up to fourteen years.

India Seeks Collaboration Between Bollywood and Nollywood
BY ROTIMI DARAMOLA · JANUARY 5, 2015

India’s acting High Commissioner in Nigeria, Kaisar Alam, on Sunday said the commission would facilitate collaboration between Nollywood and Bollywood, the Nigeria’s and India’s movie industries, respectively.

madhuri-amitanh-huma-050115Top5

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the two countries’ film industries had a lot to contribute to their Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Alam said stakeholders in the film industries from Bollywood and Nollywood could partner or exchange programmes that would yield mutual benefits and promote better understanding between the two countries.

According to him, India is the second largest producer of films in the world, next only to Hollywood.

“Indian films are very popular in several countries like Russia, China, Indonesia; and even in Nigeria.

“India can use its more than 100 years of experience in Bollywood to assist Nigeria if the people in the industry can communicate exactly what theyneed to us.

“The people in the industry have to come forward to tell us exactly where they need assistance and in what form.

“The film industry contributes significantly to the GDP of India. I understand that Nollywood also contributes significantly to the GDP of Nigeria,” he said.

He said collaboration between Nigeria and India in the movie industries will boost both country’s economies.

Today On PopAfrica.com's Sunday African Poetry Special we’ll be featuring a poetry work of the famous Author Chinua Achebe which is titled “Christmas In Biafra” , this selection was made due to the season…Enjoy!

Chinua Achebe
Chinua Achebe born Albert Chinualumogu Achebe; 16 November 1930 – 21 March 2013) was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic. His first novel Things Fall Apart (1958) was considered his magnum opus, and is the most widely read book in modern African literature.

Christmas In Biafra
This sunken-eyed moment wobbling
down the rocky steepness on broken
bones slowly fearfully to hideous
concourse of gathering sorrows in the valley
will yet become in another year a lost

Christmas irretrievable in the heights
its exploding inferno transmuted
by cosmic distances to the peacefulness
of a cool twinkling star. . . . To death-cells
of that moment came faraway sounds of other
men’s carols floating on crackling waves
mocking us. With regret? Hope? Longing? None of
these, strangely, not even despair rather
distilling pure transcendental hate . . .
Beyond the hospital gate
the good nuns had set up a manger
of palms to house a fine plaster cast
scene at Bethlehem. The Holy
Family was central, serene, the Child
Jesus plump wise-looking and rose-cheeked; one
of the magi in keeping with legend
a black Othello in sumptuous robes. Other
figures of men and angels stood
at well-appointed distances from
the heart of the divine miracle
and the usual cattle gazed on
in holy wonder. . . .
Poorer than the poor worshipers
before her who had paid their homage
with pitiful offering of new aluminum
coins that few traders would take and
a frayed five-shilling note she only
crossed herself and prayed open-eyed. Her
infant son flat like a dead lizard
on her shoulder his arms and legs
cauterized by famine was a miracle
of its kind. Large sunken eyes
stricken past boredom to a flat
unrecognizing glueness moped faraway
motionless across her shoulder. . . .
Now her adoration over
she turned him around and pointed
at those pretty figures of God
and angels and men and beasts-
a spectacle to stir the heart
of a child. But all he vouchsafed
was one slow deadpan look of total
unrecognition and he began again
to swivel his enormous head away
to mope as before at his empty distance. . . .
She shrugged her shoulders, crossed
herself again, and took him away.

Mandela’s Personal Assistant’s Book “Good Morning Mr Mandela” Named SA’s 2014 Best-Selling Book

Nelson Mandela’s former private secretary Zelda la Grange’s book “Good Morning, Mr Mandela” is the best selling book of 2014, according to a Sunday news report.

Zelda la Grange, former personal assistant of the late Nelson Mandela, during the launch of her book “Good Morning, Mr Mandela” on June 19, 2014 at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

Rapport reported that since June the book had sold about 11,000 copies per month. In South Africa the book sold more than 50,700 copies.

According to the report, this meant a gross income of about R15 million before tax and discounts to shops.

The Afrikaans version of the book has sold 20,000 copies.

Professor Tim Noakes’s book about banting diet recipes has sold a total of 116,000 English copies and 13,300 Afrikaans copies since November 2013.

Rapport said this was according to figures published by Nielsen and was based on sales at various bookshops.

In her book Le Grange writes of former president Mandela’s meetings with various celebrities including Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron and “Top Gear” presenter Jeremy Clarkson.

She also wrote about how Mandela was treated by state doctors before his death on December 5 last year.

Cassper Nyovest and AKA appear to have squashed the beef, and just in time for the festive season.

AKA and Cassper Nyovest posted a picture on their Twitter s of them together by a pool at what looks like a hotel.

They didn’t say much in their captions but the photo told followers everything they needed to know.

This comes after a few months of “beefing” between the two.

At the recent 2014 SA Hp Hop Awards AKA went on a rant about Nyovest, who was silent throughout the night.

Earlier this year when Nyovest was allegedly had a gun pointed at him by a friend of AKA’s just as he was about to perform on Live Amp.

Nyovest and AKA are managed by two separate companies with deep friendship roots.

While the ‘beef’ could have all been a publicity stunt to push their album sales through the roof or just pure hype to see where the fans would be loyal, fans are appear to be happy to see an end to the drama.

Thank you, boys, for growing up and realizing that there’s more to life than ‘beef’. Here’s to the two of you keeping us entertained in 2015.

“At Pyongyang time 7:30 pm (1030 GMT) North Korea’s Internet and mobile 3G network came to a standstill, and had not returned to normal as of 9:30 pm,” Xinhua news agency reported.

Xinhua’s reporters in North Korea found that the Internet was “very unstable” throughout the day, the report added.

Respected cyber security firm Dyn Research also said on Twitter that North Korea suffered a “country-wide Internet blackout” on Saturday.

North Korea earlier in the day called US President Barack Obama a “monkey” for inciting cinemas to screen a comedy featuring a fictional plot to kill its leader, and blamed Washington for an Internet blackout this week.

North Korea, one of the most repressive nations on the planet, has limited access to the worldwide web

The isolated dictatorship’s powerful National Defence Commission (NDC) threatened “inescapable deadly blows” over the film and accused the US of “disturbing the Internet operation” of North Korean media outlets.

The earlier Internet outage triggered speculation that US authorities may have launched a cyber-attack in retaliation for the hacking of Sony Pictures — the studio behind madcap North Korea comedy “The Interview”.
Washington has said the attack on Sony was carried out by Pyongyang.

The traditionally yellow and white protective gear that has become a symbol of Ebola treatment in West Africa got a makeover on Christmas Eve as four medical workers in Liberia transformed into Santa, elves and Frosty the Snowman with the help of a little spray paint.

Workers at the International Medical Corps treatment unit in Bong County used what they could to bring Christmas cheer to the sick. Santa, played by Paul, a logistician from Florida, painted his gear red and used inflated plastic bags to add some chunk to his waist, Maia Baldauf, an emergency program officer for International Medical Corps wrote for Quartz.

Eoin, a psychological manager from Ireland, and Amaia, a nurse from Spain, colored their suits green and took on the roles of Santa’s elves. Frosty the Snowman’s costume, worn by Joshua, a WASH engineer from Scotland, included a carrot nose, drawn-on buttons and a top hat.

The quartet of Christmas characters sang carols and doled out soda, lappas (brightly colored cloth), toys and candy to patients, who included children and a 35-week pregnant woman.

A psychological nurse from Liberia told Baldauf that the festivities could reduce the stigma attached to being treated at the unit and the misunderstandings about the workers’ mission.

“If people in the community think that we are just confining their people here, they will feel good when they hear about this celebration,” Garmai, the nurse, said. “We can show them pictures and maybe it will change their minds. They will see we are people who really care about them, not just as patients, but as human beings.”

Lil Wayne is obviously no stranger to face tattoos. He’s got plenty of ink all over his face, including one on his forehead that reads “Baked,” and he added two new tattoos over the weekend.

Tunechi got a string of Arabic text, which, according to LilWayneHQ, translates to “Mumma’s Boy,” over his left eyebrow as well as a large Eye of Providence on his chin. The Eye of Providence is known as the all-seeing eye of God watching over mankind. The graphic fits in nicely with the rapper’s “Fear God” tattoo over his eyelids.

Lil Wayne’s tattoo artist, Spider, even walked away with some precious ink of his own: a T-shirt signed by the rapper

There have been plenty of times when Lupita Nyong’o was basically perfect, and as if she wasn’t lovable enough, the actress has really brought her cuteness to a new level with a poem written just for fans. On Monday, Lupita posted a poem on Instagram to thank fans for their , wish them happy holidays, and look back on her exciting year. Here’s what she wrote:

This year was one of a kind,
And a kind one to me.
There was lots to be done,
And a whole lot to see.
I had family and friends,
And colleagues galore,
Now I have fans,
Plus a million and four.
You tweet and you post
And you instagram too.
You chat, comment, draw,
You just do what you do.
And though I don’t answer ‘Cause time is a-tickin’, Know that you matter
By the posts that I’m pickin’. I keep posting ‘Cause I know that you care,
And I care to post
When I know that you’re there.
So this season,
Though I know your name not,
I’m happy I got you,
And that I gave what you got.
I wish for you peace,
Love, joy, laughter beams,
And in the new year,
May you live out your dreams!
(And as Dr. Seuss sayssmiley
“If things start happening,
don’t worry, don’t stew,
just go right along
and you’ll start happening too.” Love, Lupita N.
