wishful thinking.

It's the truth. Nigerians were bouncing off the walls for much of 2024 at the mere mention of the word SA. Started with heart attacks at AFCON in February and ended with endless wailing for SA visas in December after South Africans tried to block the 5-year deal. In between was just wotowoto peppering month after month.

What about the style of US democracy is it that stops them from trekking to work other than that their racist policies created inequality, high crime rates and international terrorism which are the main reasons they can't walk freely on the streets, unlike the Dutch PM?

In the intricate landscape of African international relations, the relationship between South Africa and Nigeria has become a focal point of tension, misconception, and resilient diplomacy.

Despite escalating social media conflicts and isolated incidents, senior diplomatic officials insist that the core of bilateral relations remains strong and multifaceted.

SA Vs NIGERIA SOCIAL MEDIA MIRAGE

Social media has emerged as a new arena for national rivalries.

In August 2024, South African s orchestrated mass cancellations of Uber and Bolt rides in Nigeria, and Nigeria reciprocated, demonstrating the potential for digital platforms to amplify tensions.

South Africa’s head of Public Diplomacy Clayton Monyela told The Citizen “Social media is not representative of the views of South Africans or Nigerians”.

“The debate on social media is just a very small aspect, and the people posting online certainly don’t represent the majority views of either country.”

Monyela argues that the diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and South Africa remains “strong, cordial, and mutually beneficial” across political, trade, and social dimensions.

He pointed to recent high-level interactions as evidence, including President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Cape Town where he led a significant delegation and was welcomed as a respected continental leader.

NIGERIA XENOPHOBIA CAUTION 'TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!'

Despite the diplomatic reassurances, several recent incidents have tested the bilateral relationship:

In February 2024, Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria issued a warning to its citizens about potential threats during the Africa Cup of Nations semifinal.

The advisory, which referenced “inflammatory online comments” and threats against “Nigerians cooking jollof rice” drew sharp criticism from South African officials.

Monyela swiftly responded.

“Bafana Bafana has played the Super Eagles many times, and there’s no history of soccer hooliganism associated with the outcome of such encounters. South Africans pose no threat to Nigerians… This is totally unnecessary!”

ENTERTAINMENT RIVALRY?

The “diplomatic chill” may have also impacted cultural exchanges.

Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr saw her Johannesburg and Cape Town shows cancelled due to her team’s visa applications being denied.

Similarly, Nigeria’s under-18 basketball team initially faced visa challenges for the FIBA U-18 Afrobasket tournament in Cape Town, an incident the Nigerian Basketball Federation condemned as “against the spirit of sportsmanship.”

The cultural sphere has become another site of competition, particularly in music.

The rivalry between Nigeria’s Afrobeats and South Africa’s Amapiano has sparked ionate online debates.

Even the Grammy Awards became a battleground when South African popstar Tyla won the inaugural Best African Music Performance category, beating four Nigerian nominees.

CHIDIMMA ADETSHINA INVESTIGATION

The relationship has also been tested by complex identity issues. In October 2023, South African Home Affairs initiated an investigation into the citizenship of a Soweto-born law student, Chidimma Adetshina, and her Mozambican-born mother, referring the case to the Hawks for criminal investigation.

Adetshina’s father is Nigerian and she went to the country after her troubles in South Africa.
There she competed and won the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, and later runner-up at the international Miss Universe pageant.

‘STRONG AND CORDIAL '

Monyela urged a more nuanced understanding of bilateral relations.

“The interactions between our countries at the head of state, istration, and senior officials level demonstrate our strong connection,” he explained.

He acknowledged specific challenges, such as crime and immigration concerns, but emphasised that these are being addressed through proper governmental channels.

“Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa are strong and cordial,” he reiterates. “The interactions between our countries at various levels demonstrate a commitment to mutual understanding and cooperation.”

I don't like this of yours, but how can you say your family is boring when this is probably the only time you'll get to spend time with you family throughout the year?

I honestly wish I was at home with my family at this moment fixing those Christmas lights, writing down the dishes to be prepared tomorrow and just having everyone under the same roof doing something around the house... But at the same time, I don't want to leave my husband to come home to an empty house after work on Christmas day.

But come new year's, I'm going home to get lit with my sisters... When I entered December, I left my introverted self back in November and I shall see it once again in January... grin grin grin

Back to the topic. Kudos to south Africa. This SA power minister threw up a party upon his appointment. Merely watching the party, I thought he would fail because I was imagining that he is celebrating as one who won a jackpot or a ticket to loot SA treasury. But now, I am thrilled by his performance. Kudos

Many African politicians' behavior really makes me pessimistic about their possible outcome. It is good to have high performers up there

Those wishing SA and black South Africans ill are the ones who will feel mocked. Thanks for the rest of your message.

MTN plans to acquire a banking licence once the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) opens up its national payments system to fintechs and other non-banking entities, Business Times reports.

South Africa’s second-biggest mobile network operator already s limited transactional banking services through its MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) service.

MoMo offers payments and money transfers to individuals and businesses. Customers use their phone numbers instead of bank numbers to identify digital wallets holding their money.

MoMo’s primary target customers are small or informal businesses like spaza shops and the low-income mass consumer market, both of which still rely heavily on cash.

As it stands, MTN or any other fintech which wants to offer these types of services without a banking licence must work through a licenced bank as a sponsor. For MoMo, MTN uses African Bank.

However, this past week, TechCentral reported that the SARB was working to enable non-banking entities like fintechs to gain direct access to the core clearing and settlements system.

SARB National Payments System department head Tim Masela said although banks were the backbone of the financial system in of savings and s, non-banks were offering convenient transactional services.

“We believe that we should move with the times and open up the system for the entry of non-banks,” Masela said.

MTN South Africa chief fintech officer Kagiso Mothibi confirmed to Business Times that fintechs will be given an opportunity to participate in the banking system following an ongoing review of the payments system.

“When that is rolled out, we’ll definitely be looking to pursue our own licence,” Mothibi said.

The SARB is currently developing frameworks to authorise fintechs and other non-banking entities to access the national payment system directly.

MoMo is one of several fintechs that participated in the SARB’s working groups to develop the regulatory framework that will enable greater direct participation in core banking services.

The frameworks are necessary to balance innovation with the risks associated with a more flexible and open financial system.

Mothibi said that bying a traditional banking partner would allow MTN to exercise much more control over the future of its banking services.

MTN has ambitious plans to make its MoMo service a true low-cost alternative to traditional banking s.

The service has expanded to 11 million ed s, of which roughly three million are active s.

Helping drive this adoption is MTN introducing several significant enhancements to MoMo in the past two years.

In September 2023, it launched a business wallet and international remittances.

In February 2024, MTN announced an agreement with Mastercard that gave all MoMo wallet holders a virtual and physical card that they could use to make payments in numerous countries.

That came after the world’s second-largest payments network provider took up a minority stake in MTN Group Fintech, worth up to $200 million (R3.8 billion at the time).

These enhancements have helped boost MTN’s fintech service revenue, which increased 59.1% year-on-year in the first half of 2024.

This continued into the third quarter of 2024, when the segment’s revenue jumped 61.8% compared to the same period in 2023.

Vodacom (South Africa's largest mobile network) has also increasingly focused on its financial services offerings, including VodaPay and M-Pesa, Africa’s most successful mobile money service.

The shift towards financial services aims to diversify telecom offerings.

While conventional cellular service revenue continues to be their bread and butter, growth in this segment has slowed down in recent years.

The rapid expansion of mobile network infrastructure, declining data prices, and increased competition have made cellular connectivity in South Africa more accessible, limiting growth prospects in cellular revenues.

The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is 2024’s SA Person of the Year for especially keeping the country load shedding-free (powercut-free) this year.

The Daily Maverick reported on 22 December 2024 that the Minister was given this title by its readers.

They voted for him for emphasising on ability, transparency and keeping load shedding at bay for most of the year.

Daily Maverick defines a Person of the Year winner as “an individual or group that has made the most significant and widespread positive contributions to the nation or the world as a whole.”

According to the publication, Ramokgopa’s level of transparency and ability made him stand out from the rest. He made South Africans part of the journey by holding regular media briefings and public forums.

One of the main factors that contributed to Ramokgopa winning the title is being able to keep the country’s lights on for the longest time. This was after SA was hit hard by rolling blackouts that had a ripple effect on many sectors.

Since his appointment in June 2024, Ramokgopa has worked hard to fix the numerous issues that were plaguing Eskom. He has been lauded for hugely contributing to giving SA some form of stability and change.

Eskom announced this week that load shedding has been suspended for a total of 268 days. That means South Africa has gone more than half a year without rolling blackouts. The power utility said this has resulted in “R16.06 billion year-on-year diesel savings.”

A recently surfaced video of a multi-disciplinary team taking down a suspected Nigerian drug dealer is making the rounds online. Law enforcement was filmed moving in on the suspect sitting in a parked car in what appeared to be an industrial area.

The video was posted on the @MDNnewss X page on Friday, 13 December 2024. According to the caption, the operation happened in the Gauteng province.

"In a targeted operation in Pretoria (Tshwane) West, law enforcement officers arrested a Nigerian national suspected of drug dealing."

The 39-second clip shows a team comprising the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Drug Unit swooping on the occupant of a Toyota Fortuna.

Several women, including TMPD Commissioner Yolanda Faro, are in the leading group, ed by officers armed with high-calibre weapons. Faro, a female officer and a male officer in civilian clothing are seen approaching the vehicle from the left — hitting the window as they bark orders for the suspect to get out.

"Open this door! Open it! Get out, get out!" the officers command. The suspect emerges seconds later before cops order him to lie down facedown on the floor. The man is then placed in handcuffs while his car is searched.

The clip garnered almost 490,000 views since it was published with over 4,000 comments.
