I don't understand why reasonable people are falling for this Republican crap of $10 an hour minimum wage. I challenge any of these guys here residing in Nigeria to move over to US and make a decent living on $10 an hour salary. Do they know that they have to pay both Fed and State taxes not to talk of Union dues on that measly salary. As a single guy, they can't live a comfortable life earning that pittance in most Cities in America. What's so bad if a Quarter is added to the price of Double Cheeseburger or a slice of Pizza. To me $15 is not even fair for a minimum wage but it should be a starting point. I live in Chicagoland and a single guy or lady with no child can't survive on less than $36.000 a year unless if he or she wants to live in a crappy neighborhood with all kind of danger looming around. To get a Studio apartment in a decent neighborhood in Chicago and most of the cosmopolitan cities in the Fruited Plains will cost you close to $1K monthly if not more and that's excluding the utilities and other bills like phones charges, transportation, cable subscription, food, clothings or and so many other things. Tell me how far that $10 pittance will go. I wasn't going to come in on this discussion anymore but I see a lot of misinformation and junks being put out by people that are falling in line with the Republicon propaganda. I quite well when Newt Gingrich was the Republican Speaker of the House and Tom Delay was the Majority Leader swearing that the minimum wage will be raised over their dead bodies. Like I posted earlier, Costco has been paying that 15 bucks an hour for the last two years and they are still making tons of cash. Everytime I go to Costco, there is no day that I won't have to queue outside before getting a spot inside to shop despite paying hip fees. If Costco can do it, I see no reason why other mega cooperation can't do it.

Corners shop or other smaller businesses may be exempted, but not all these billion dollar cooperations. Would a cooperation like McDonald's move production of burger patties and buns to China? I don't think so.

Indeed automate is an option, and has already happened with the likes of Ford half a century ago, McDonalds and Walmart a decade ago, and just yesterday, Amazon opened a fully automated supermarket in UK. And that's not because of the minimum wage but because of profit seeking by reducing their wage bill, so it would be wrong to blame the minimum wage for it. If you were old enough in the 80s and 90s you'd "Productivity" was the management buzzword of the time as companies sought efficiencies and cost reductions by further automating.

Like I said, tricky, as companies will find ways to get around paying the minimum wage since you'd not find it easy to impose US tax on robots in China or Mexico.

By the way, are you aware US companies keep their revenue abroad? They buy US debt in the form of treasury bills and earn interest from US with it too, to show you how dubious company managers can be.

I when I was a Jnr in High School, my first real part time job was at a store called Goldblatts then and the minimum wage was a little over $4 then but my Brother and I do not mind because we were living with our parents and we were doing that job not to get in trouble. Nowadays, a lot of those minimum wage earners have spouses or children to cater for hence they end up working two jobs and most of them are being subsidized by the government. Why should our tax money subsidize those who are making Billions if not Trillions of $$$ for Big Corporations that are sharking their employees while the executives are making Tens of Millions of Dollars yearly in salary and stock options.

That's why it's a tricky issue. The natives are too wealthy to do minimum wage jobs so the foreigners do them instead. The owners need the foreign cheap labour so they immigration to get it. Denmark too is equivalent to around $21 USD.

Are you sure about the bolded though. As per others like shelter, food, health, transport - some adjustments and a bit of socialism/government benefits/subsidies can take care of those. Indirectly, the government is still picking up the slack.
