Firstly, you need to decide the course you want to study, then check the requirements for the course from the school website, also ensure what ever course you are going for is PGWP eligible.

Good evening, everyone.
I recently received ission to the Master’s in Information Systems (MSIS) program at Northeastern University’s Toronto campus. I understand that the main campus is in Boston, USA, and I’ve heard mixed opinions about how much attention is given to the satellite campuses.

I’d appreciate any insights on the credibility and overall experience at the Toronto campus. Additionally, I’m curious about the success and reliability of their internship/co-op programs in Canada — are they as strong and well-ed as those offered in the U.S.?

To be honest, I had never heard of Northeastern University's Toronto campus before. My office is on Front Street, right behind the CN Tower, and I work in tech for one of the big banks in Toronto. When you mentioned the campus on King Street, I had to Google it—haha—and honestly, it looks like what Canadians would call a 'strip mall college' (Google that term to see what I mean).

That said, it's recognized as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI):
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/prepare/designated-learning-institutions-list/northeastern-university.html

So, all things being equal, you should qualify for a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) because it’s a Master’s program. If it’s a one-year program, make sure to double-check the latest rules—someone else can correct me if I’m wrong.

Most people in Canada probably haven’t heard of the school, but it does seem legit. Don’t be surprised if most of your classmates are Indian or Chinese—mostly Indian, from my experience—haha.

It might be tough to get day-to-day info about how the school runs.

Now, when it comes to tech, internships or co-op programs in Canada are honestly one of the best things you can do for yourself. It’s not always easy to get one, especially since well-known schools usually provide more to help their students land good opportunities.

In Canada, getting a co-op/internship is usually a mix of your school’s reputation and your own skills. You’ll understand more when the time comes. But if your program includes a co-op or internship, that’s a big ‘yes’ from me. Go for it—it's worth it.

The first thing is to get your GCMS notes for the rejected application, so you know the detailed reasons why you were refused, after that, it gives you a direction on how to package your new application

I guess since you If you have secured ission already, you have done your due diligence already, why are you having misgivings? Anyway, the school is legit, their programme is solid, I have come across a few people have enrolled and graduated from the school, infact they will be having their graduation ceremony on May 27th.
Pros of the school
Their course structure is solid
Their faculty is also great.
Their lecture structure is very manageable (allows you time to do one or time to get income)

Cons of the school
It is expensive
It is a private university, as such their graduates are not eligible to participate in the ONIP masters stream for PNP.

In my honest opinion, if you can afford the school, it is not bad at all, as for the co-op, you would have to search for yourself, though I understand the school usually has a fair for students to meet with potential employers, though it is not a guaranty they would hire you for co-op, at least the fair gives you a chance.

Many Nigerian students in Canada are now stuck after their PGWP expires, with no clear PR path a harsh truth many are ashamed to it. Studying in Canada doesn’t guarantee PR, and a few students I know who came through Northeastern ended up dropping out or switching schools.
If I had your budget, especially since working in Canada can’t be relied on to fund your education and even residents are struggling to find jobs, choosing a place like Toronto could be a miscalculation. I’d rather go for a program with a strong PR stream like Ontario’s Master’s Graduate Stream (only for certain public schools) or invest in French training abroad to qualify for French-speaking draws. Best of luck!

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to study a 1-year diploma course at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. I want to ensure I fully understand all the expenses I need to include in my Proof of Funds for the student visa application.

Aside from tuition fees, what other costs should I for? I'm looking for a breakdown that might include:

- Flight and travel costs

- Living expenses (rent, utilities, etc.)

- Food and groceries

- Textbooks and school supplies

- Any other hidden or unexpected costs I should prepare for

Based on my research, the total estimated cost ranges between CAD $42,813.85 and $44,813.85 for the year. Does this align with current experiences, or are there additional expenses I should consider?

Please, if you've gone through this process or have accurate information, I'd really appreciate a full breakdown of the typical or expected costs for international students in Saskatchewan.

Thanks a lot in advance!

The anxiety has been stressful oh. I just got a request to my medicals, I didn't do upfront but I hope this is a good sign. I didn't get this request with my first attempt.

How long does it take after medicals before it's ed.

Good day I am doing my juniour brother's application and yet to submit. I am wondering why it's showing a spaceholder for me to his medicals from the beginning. Is that the same situation with you? Did u a blank sheet in the beginning?

Greetings my people, old time Nairalander here based in CA.

I just thought it wise to come seek the counsel of experienced here as student visa applications is not my forte as compared to PR and TRV visa applications.

Basically, my 15 year old brother in law who is currently in secondary school in Nigeria and finishing this August, just got ission to study Software Development as a 2 year Diploma course in Bows Valley College Calgary with proposed start date in September. We applied to 3 schools including Uni of Calgary who are yet to give a final verdict.

He has a five year visiting visa and was here in CA last year for holidays. Bow valley has sent a document to enable him apply for his study visa. I however know that study visas from Nigeria now is tough hence my enquires/questions below. Please feel free to engage or provide any valuable advice/suggestions and answers.

1. Is the fact that he is applying for Diploma from secondary school okay? Is it a regular and popular study route or will it throw red flags. Otherwise, over here Diploma is quite popular.

2. His Dad (My Father in law) would be sponsoring him for his education in Canada. WHat is the minimum amount that should be in the bank statement.

3. He initially wanted to send the fees to his daughter in Canada so she would be the one to sponsor, but I temporarily advised against it. I feel if the appliocant shows too much ties to his sister or Canada, it may be a red flag. I feel his Dad should be his sponsor. Abi how ona see am? And btw, FIL is a Business General contractor and I worry about what documents he needs to show? (Is Cert of incorporation, Tax cert necessary or should he keep it simple)?

4. Can FIL use his personal bank statement as proof of sponsorship? Or does it have to be his business where the money is coming from?

5. If I correctly, Statement of purpose/intent are usually required during study permit applications. Is this still a cardinal part of the application. Does any one have a draft / example we can read and use as a guide only.

6. I saw someone post that he added an affidavit of return. Please what is this document? Also, how can a 16 year old boy show ties to Nigeria and demonstrate that he would return. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your anticipated response, Looking forward to them.

CC: @amnotapervert I can see you are in Canada as well and thought to also seek you experienced opinion on this post above. I am trying to tidy an application for my brother in law who is a minor. My wife and I are citizens already and want to make sure we put up a solid application which shows intent of him going back to Nigeria.

Pls can you look at our questions above and share ur opinions.

Also, a placeholder for documents shows for medicals already, can i submit the application without medicals?
Finally, someone here advised his sponsor (his dad) opens an for him? Is this necessary since he is a minor?

Okay, I’ll do my best to give you the most helpful response based on my knowledge and experience.

(1) First of all, don’t rush him. Canada is not always the easiest environment for young people—especially teenagers—as they can be exposed to drugs and other risky lifestyles. Yes, it can be that bad in certain situations.

Let’s assume he’ll be 16 by August. The University of Calgary accepts students from age 16 and above, which in my opinion is a better option than starting at a college. After college, at 18 or 19, he’ll likely be job hunting and may face frustration if he can’t secure one easily.

If he goes to college at 16, he’ll still need to do a BSc eventually. So why not go straight to university and start the BSc right away? Just thinking out loud here.

Canada’s job market is changing and becoming more competitive. I personally have a Master’s degree in Canada along with several Cloud Computing certifications, and I know how difficult it was for me to land a mid-level role.

If he finishes his BSc at 21, he can potentially get a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Before turning 24, he’ll likely know how to secure his Permanent Residency (PR), and both his age and experience will work in his favor.

In summary, sending him young—if his father can afford it—isn’t a bad idea. IRCC tends to favor younger students who clearly come for educational purposes, as opposed to older applicants (25–32) trying to get into college.

(2) The minimum amount needed in the bank statement is subjective, but the general rule is:

* One year’s tuition (with ideally you have already paid 1/3 paid as a deposit to accept the offer)
* Plus \$20,000 for living expenses.
And a means on this case a business that can take care of the children school fees overtime.

The average college fee for international student a year is about $20,000 to $30,000 so if you are looking for actual amount that's about $50,000 CAD minimum as POF I always say make it $60,000 CAD.

It’s subjective because you mentioned he has a sister in Canada. That makes the boy his father’s dependent, and the father must prove he can him without affecting his sister’s wellbeing or .

(3) Do not send the money to the daughter. Let the father be the official sponsor. He should submit all relevant documentation about his business and subcontract work to prove he is financially capable and that his business is in good standing.

(4)Do not transfer money from the business to a personal just for Proof of Funds (POF). The key is to show that the funds are readily available to the boy.

The father just needs to prove that he owns the business and has full access to the money in it. If there are personal savings too, then use both s—but don’t move money around for the purpose of POF.

(5) Yes, a Statement of Purpose/Intent is required. I don’t currently have a template, but people here can assist. The letter should clearly explain why you’re sending a 16-year-old to university or college, considering the average Canadian student starts at 18.

(6) I’m hearing about an “affidavit of return” for the first time, but if there’s a strong family business, that’s already a valid home tie. However, let’s be honest—IRCC often expects young students like this to stay after graduation. You’ll still need to explain in the documents that he intends to return home after his studies.

That said, IRCC is less concerned about a 16-year-old finishing school by 20 or 21 than a 26-year-old finishing by 28 and returning to Nigeria.

I’m heading to work now—reply if you need any clarifications. I’m typing this quickly while on the GO Train.

I got a refusal and a withdrawn application within 2 months
I recently began the process of applying for my study permit. Unfortunately, my first application was refused and the second was withdrawn by IRCC due to an issue with the PAL I provided cos i used itforthe first one that was refused. As a result, the PAL is no longer considered valid and cannot be used for subsequent applications requiring a PAL even though the document clearly states that it is valid until December 31, 2025. I have requested for GCMS note for the first application but yet to receive the note. Do i need to request for GCMS note for the second application that was withdrawn?
My sister is the one sponsoring me and we only ed her statement as POF.
In light of this, I kindly request your guidance on how to submit a new study permit application and what other ing documents do I need to add

You will need to rework your POF, the of your sponsor seems too volatile to serve as POF, the outflows and inflows are too many and the balance often left in the is too small to cater for you, also you did not add your SOA and other documents that shows your economic establishment, you need to show what you are doing presently backed with docs and if your sponsor can send you the funds then that will be helpful

memorial university of Newfoundland and fall 2025

Wishing you all the best!

I honestly don’t understand why more people don’t choose Memorial University. It’s ranked among the top 25 universities in Canada (currently 22nd), and it offers some of the most affordable tuition fees for international students. You can pay less than 10 million Naira per year — and might even have some change left.
👉 [Graduate Tuition & Fees – Memorial University](https://www.mun.ca/finance/graduate-student-tuition-and-fees/)

Plus, Newfoundland — although quite cold — offers one of the easiest pathways to permanent residency through the Atlantic Immigration Program and Provincial Nominee Programs like the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP). Just make sure your course and skills are in demand:
👉 [Nova Scotia Nominee Program Info](https://liveinnovascotia.com/nova-scotia-nominee-program#tab-0)

You’ve definitely made a smart choice! Memorial is not only affordable but also well-funded by the government, as it's the only university in Newfoundland. Once you get your PR, you’re free to move to other provinces for better opportunities if you wish.

Again, wishing you all the best — and to anyone searching for schools in Canada, Memorial University should definitely be on the list!

Request for a new PAL, GCMS note takes 1 month. Don't submit your sponsor's SOA only, you can have your sponsor send the funds to your and submit her documents to proof the source of income, and explain the lump sum that will come from your sponsor.
