My kids still use this shoe to date. Although my Aba brothers have taken over the brand.

I wore it during my primary school in the early 80s when Nigerian was flooded with foreign quality products. I miss those days.

Those days, if you chop bread, you go know say na bread you chop. Not what we have nowadays

( Someone can give a better story)

Bata became Famad sometime in the 1990s, and not long after,.the shops started closing down. I guess losses were high. By 1999, it had ceased to.exist.

There was some attempt by the original company at relaunching shops at Silverbird galleria in Abuja central district a few years ago, don't know if they are still open, but it's not the Nigerian Bata we knew.

Someone can tell the tale better, this is from my own perspective

Rocked these nice strong shoes back then in primary school from Kingsway stores @ Lagos Island. Nostalgic times! Don't know if BATA still exists
You are one of us. They call us old skool but we really rock our time...80s, 90s and early 2000s. We are the last generation of sane humans to walk the earth.

The only reason you discard them is because you just wanted another one. It lasts forever!

I didn't attend a public school, and there is absolutely nothing wrong in attending one. That said, those Cortina shoes were expensive and was generally out of the reach of public school students.
It might not be public school in the real sense of it but I never had it called container in my school even when we rocked it we were all aware it's a bata cortina and on the ment on TV back then we sing along," run to school with a bata cortina"

My dad used to buy the shoes for me from famad stores at ojota
Yeah, bata later became famad plc. I don't know if their office is still at ojota, but I just checked, their website is functional with products on display.
