Why Kalu’s Indigene Bill Must Be Rejected (13117 Views)

Ojiofor: Nigeria, as a country, constitute myriad nations with each nation having its own seperate culture, history, traditions, language, heritage etc. So, as a "Nigerian" from yorubaland , I will not go to Anambra state and say, because am Nigerian that automatcally confers on me the right to meddle in the internal political affairs of Anambra state even though, am aware, I have no knowledge of their customs, language etc. That's just akin to looking for trouble! We are all Nigerians within a federation (of nations) and each nation is semi-autonomous. 1 Like |

T9ksy:You mentioned all the points I made are already in existence. Have they implemented the bill? How could my point be in existence when they haven't yet implemented the bill? My reasons are not yet lame because the bill hasn't been implemented yet and we don't yet know the outcome. Therefore your statement lacks reasoning and logic. |

jidemilo: It does NOT make any sense because; 1) Nobody can grant indigenship, FG or National Assembly can NOT grant indigenship . . . it is natural. Indigenship cab NOT be enforced just as love and unity can NOT be enforced. 2) Citizenship is not the same thing ad indigenship. Sodiq Khan (Long term Mayor of London), Rishi Sunak (Former Prime Minister) and Kemi Badenoch (Leader of Tory Party) became British citizens because they were born in the UK but they never became indigenes of England . Only English peoples are indigenes of England. 3 Likes |

DMerciful: You people don't think DEEPLY about major moves. You wrongly assume that this would be restricted to Lagos and other Yoruba States but you are dead wrong. By the time, you start seeing Justice Tajudeen Ishola, Justice Ibrahim Mukthair and Justice Binta Aminu representing Anambra, Imo and Abia States in the Supreme Court or Chief Denis Obahiagbon appointed as Minister to represent Ebonyi, it would be too late to shout marginalisation since, everybody would now be equal and they can claim indigenship of these States, having lived there for ten years. Indigenship evolve through ancestries and cultural assimilation, not legislation. For instance, Sen Fatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North) is an illustrious indigene of Ogbomosho BUT he is a descendant of 18th century Fulani settler in Ogbomosho. Today he is a proud Yoruba man. Gov Umar Bago is a Nupe indigene but his family is originally from Fulani Jihardists that settled and assimilated into Nupe society. |

OMEGA009: The bill goes beyond holding political posts. . The real reason for recurring crisis in Southern Kaduna and the Middle Belt is the attempts by the Hausa-Fulanis to become indigenes of these places and enjoy rights and privileges of indigenes including ancestral claims to lands. If you tell the Berom, Ngas or Anaguta, Agatu or Tiv that you want the Fulanis to become indigenes of their States, you would be beaten mercilessly. 1 Like |

MattChidi: It would cause greater problems than solutions. Few large tribes, who obviously would be the ones controlling the FG could use it to strategically position their people across Nigeria both geographically and politically. Read how Hausa-Fulanis settlers in Jos used the influence of their people in the FG to create Jos North LGA, which is predominantly for themselves. They now use slots of Plateau State to gain employment and even political appointments. In 2009, President Yar'Adua appointed a Kano man as a Minister from Plateau State. Indigenes of Plateau protested but all their protests fell to deaf ears. In 2011, GEJ appointed Olusegun Aganga (originally from Edo State) a Minister from Lagos. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila moved a motion that he isn't an indigene of Lagos State but nobody listened to him. |

Unfortunately, you are either in a country or you're not. If Yorubas want exclusivity, they have to do it in Yoruba nation

DMerciful: You are fixated on Yorubas, instead of try to read and comprehend the issues raised. Look at UK, despite 800 years of colonialism, coexistence, subjugation and inter-marriages, the Irish people haven't become English. Yoruba is NOT the only people in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, it would favour the Yoruba but ,by nature ,Yoruba aren't interested in becoming indigenes of other States. It would put so many minority tribes in serious jeopardy. In short, this law is dead on arrival. Apart from Igbos and may be Fulanis, over 70% of Nigerians would oppose it. 1 Like |

Irish have Ireland, English have England! UK is a lose confederation. Yoruba needs Yoruba nation for exclusivity. As long as you're in a country, all citizens have equal right to vote and be voted for anywhere in Nigeria oyatz: |

Nefort: The constitution of Nigeria already grant citizenship rights to ALL Nigerians. You only need to be citizens to run for elections. However, indigenship of a town or kingdom is by ancestries and cultural identities. If you want to become indigene of Ilesha, you become an Ilesha person by adoption of their language, culture and ways of life. You can NOT retain your ethnic identity and still want to be regarded as indigenes of other peoples ancestral homelands. This is fraudulent. 2 Likes |

DMerciful: I never said all citizens don't have rights but they aren't the same as indigenes. Benjamin Kalu's Bill try aim at 'making non-indigenes to become indigenes' This is very laughable. Suppose ,Ikemefuna and Umar Aldo who have lived in Benue State since 2010, without becoming Tiv or Idoma, want to become indigenes of Benue State, who will confer indigenship on them? 1) President 2) Governor of Benue State 3) Local Government chairman of their place of residence 4) Traditional Rulers of the towns they live in 5) Benjamin Kalu Indigenship ,just as love or unity can NOT be created by legislation. |

Nefort: Yeah, I did say that all the points you raised are already in existence , abi people are not freely traveling and settling wherever they deemed fit, all over the country? Next, you claimed the bill will also encourage us to be more mixed. Are we not mixed enough as it is extantly, in the country? This same "mix" you want to encourage with this du.mb bill is already causing us problems in Yorubaland where we have many yorubas-fulanis who do not have the interests of yorubaland, at heart. These are folks with yoruba names, speaks the language like indigenes but they are aligned to fulanis objective in Yorubaland. They are the enemies within, Yorubaland. These are the so-called "yorubas" who are in the vanguard for the introduction of sharia in the land. No we don't need any more "mix" in our land. For us in Yorubaland, the bill is D.O.A |

Ojiofor:Chinedu, next time, ask questions. A former governor of Ondo State actually governed the state for good 8 years but guess what? His father was said to be from Kogi State. While his oppositions at the time tried to use this against him, the silly idea wasn’t popular because who cares? It didn’t affect his ambition in any way and in fact, he’s said to be the best and most-loved Governor the state has had so far. Again and I’ll always repeat this, this is something about the Yorubas that will be very hard to replicate in other regions of the country. Once you’re Yoruba and identifies as one, nobody really cares the exact state you’re from. Most yorubas don’t even know that the wife of the president isn’t purely Yoruba because who cares? ![]() Conversely, a “whole” Bianca, the wife of your beloved Ojukwu, who used his all to save you was not tolerated by Anambra ibos to represent them in the upper chamber of the Country yet you cry over marginalization everyday when the whole world knows how you openly discriminate against yourselves ![]() An Anambra Igbo sees women from Imo as “Ashawo”, Imo and Anambra see Enugu as inferior and second-class igbos, an ibo man from Enugu sees the one from Abia state as an aba-made subhuman while people from Abia state see those from Ebonyi as osus who aren’t supposed to be living in the midst of humans ![]() 1 Like |

Nigerians can clearly see those who have turned problem for this country.. right from Nnamdi Azikiwe to Aguiyi Ironsi down to Banjamin Kalu.. all their actions to erode other people's cultures and traditions are borne out of the fact that they can't stay put in their region.. just like the Fulani marauders, these ones too roam about the country looking for spaces to dominate and colonize. I believe the States House of Assembly can act and fight the nonsense bill at the Supreme Court. Never again must we allow highly decorated idi0ts put our peace and unity on the line for their selfish ethnic domination agenda. Yoruba ronu.. Yorubas wake up and reject this nonsense.. outsiders won't leave their lands to be eyeing South West jobs and public offices meant strictly for Yorubas under guise of indigene bill. 1 Like |
