Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 (2520523 Views)
jedisco(m): 5:13pm On Jan 25 |
To conclude: recently, we were told how Trump would cut Indians to size. It's still early days but boy, he's signed a number of executive directives. I'm yet to see any which would disproportionately affect indians. Bringing an end to DEI (which aimed to adress racial disparities in attainment borne from centuries of unfair treatment) would see more Asians (of which indians make a good chunk) in top Americans colleges and subsequently help them into top jobs. Oddly, black Africans might be the most affected as most migrating few who were on average higher attaining than African Americans so were able to ride their wave (I believe) into good spots. Ending citizenship by birth (though unlikely to hold) would mostly affect Latinos and South-American migrants. Nothing has been said about H1B visa yet but already hundreds of billions of dollars is being poured into AI - leading the crew is Soft Bank CEO- Masayochi Son who is Korean-Japanese. tech leaders tend to favour immigration and if the recent body movements by them is anything to go by, I wouldn't be surprised that while Trump uses border closure and some deportations as a news headline to keep MAGA happy, he secretly listens to tech heads and opens up the work visa pathway. We can guess who'd form most of the beneficiaries. The endgame from the previous two points i.e more Indians in uni and less bottlenecks in job places for them would only see more Indians getting H1B spots. Furthermore, more Indians getting into highly paid tech jobs would create the PR that'd lead to an increased ittance of Indians in the west as many would look to replicate the success of big American tech by getting talent all over the world. We can see this in the UK who might soon announce an AI visa. Ultimately, these Indians in high places would create the network effect that'd see more come in or certain jobs being offshored to India- No fret! its how the world works. To be clear, while I'm against ending DEI, I have no qualms with Indians getting spots they have worked hard for. It's still early days and some of these are postulations but I can only wonder what African folks who ed Trump in the hope that he'd fight Indians for them think now. Oddly, though a small cohort participated, it appears Indians like Trump And before someone start mumbling racist jibes e.g 'type of indians e.t.c', they should look at history and find out the type of Brits UK sent to Australia and where both nations are today. 4 Likes |

jedisco: That visual you attached is really interesting but I'm not surprised. I have always known that Trump's presidency will deal the west a major blow and benefit American adversaries. In Trump's world, allies will be enemy while enemies will be friends. The next 4 years presents China an opportunity to deal a major irreversible blow to the west thanks to Trump |

jedisco: I am actually surprised that this is what it has come to on this thread. There are a lot of things going on in the immigrant community in this country that require solutions. And yet folks are here regurgitating shopworn shibboleths gleaned from somewhere else. This is how bigotry starts oo! The African immigrant community has a lot of work to do. We cannot afford to be bogged down by all these base talks about another tribe, nationality etc. We have couples resorting to fisticuffs because of child care benefit. In 2024, for a good half of the year the sermon and bible study was all about how a husband and a wife can live together in love and harmony in the church I attend. How both can share domestic chores etc. Just that! Not Jesus Christ is coming soon. The spate of divorce and separation has forced the clergy to go back to basics. There are teachers in the public and catholic school system who are encountering extreme difficulties with kids from our community. They do not listen to instructions. When the parents are called, they either do not respond or become recalcitrant. Some kids form gangs and beat up the white kids, yes they do that. As a matter of fact, they are saying black kids are now being represented in the Canadian penitentiary system (In 2020, Black youth made up 29% of the Black population in the Criminal Justice System). https://www.yorku.ca/dighr/project/retooling-black-anxiety/#:~:text=Representation%20of%20Black%20youths%20in,in%20racially%20inequal%20setting12. Can the typical African immigrant really afford these things? The truth is that in most cases, when people start 'talking smack' about others, they are either malcontents or just plain falling short of their expectations for themselves. The people cashing out big from the burgeoning population are not complaining or slinging mud. The Doctors with full roster that are not accepting more patients, the folks who have stocks in Loblaws (people go sha chop food), the banks (immigrants go sha have bank s) and even the new immigrants excelling in their fields. Last month I met someone who was earning NGN30K as a teacher with 10 years experience, they came in last year and already have a contract with a remuneration of upwards of CAD5K per month! You won't find these people complaining about people hopping on 3 appendages to catch a bus! Yes, there are people experiencing difficulties getting employment etc. What are we going to do about that? Complain about Trudeau? About other people? Or look at ways we can go about it and thereby enrich our community? 10 Likes 1 Share |

jedisco: Indians are more hostile to blacks in the west than whites. Sometimes whites may have small conscience but most Indians don't. Despite being immigrants themselves, the black immigrant community can't count on Indians as allies cos they see themselves as superior to us. Those days, ALL the interviews I went for where an Indian is the hiring manager never worked. The only ones that worked where the ones with white managers. In a country pushing DEI, these guys will flood everywhere with their people not because they are that good but pure acute nepotism. Go to some Tim Hortons and Walmart stores they are managing, the workers there are 99% Indians including ones that can't speak audible English. What happens to giving 60% of the slot to Indians and 40% to other immigrants? They show no mercy to other immigrants so I don't give a damn about them too. We didn't come to a white man country only to come and suffer racism from them too in addition to white people. So I clearly understand why folks are calling them out 12 Likes 1 Share |

ferfer: Well said! Your post about black folks in the criminal justice system is rather chilling: 'From 8% in 2002, 19% in 2006 and reaching 29% in 2020. Indeed, one-half of Black inmates in the CJS are 30 years of age or younger....Factors such as discretionary policing tactics in Black and economically marginalized neighbourhoods, harsher arrest decisions, police reliance on child welfare agencies to resolve conflicts within Black families instead of service provisions to sub-standard service delivery mechanisms, have been cited as major causes of these increases' Work has to be done to reverse this trend. 2 Likes |

Kenn55: You raise good points. We don't need them as allies and certainly should not see ourselves as inferior to anyone. We need to rise up the ladder and build our network. Not excusing tribalism but we know than many humans have a tribal mindset. Without discounting what you've said, the question becomes - how do we solve this issue? 3 Likes |

ferfer: U don't tell people what to discuss or not discuss here. People storming and looting stores is an early onset sign of anarchy and it should bother reasonable citizens. If U know unruly black kids in school or jail, initiate the discussion and let's proffer way out. |

Kenn55:They can be ruthless. Any workplace they capture, it is like a state capture in Nigeria. You see a foreign worker scheming out a citizen in a workplace. I once worked in a bakery in Mississauga where I clearly told the manager that there is a language barrier. These guys refused to speak in English. the manager said to them, Canada has French and English languages and told me I know you won't last here. I said you bet! |

SIRTee15: Oh yes, I can't tell you what to discuss but I can add my own point of view so that an outsider or new entrant looking through this forum will not think we are all trapped in the quicksand of bigotry. And I am not that type of 'reasonable citizen' that is bothered by isolated incidents of looting, neither is it my job to worry about such even if it is widespread. As you were now. 3 Likes |

jedisco: I am glad you homed in on the excerpt above! You see that bolded, it is laden with meaning. The system does not understand us. They are giving western interpretations to African problems and that will always exacerbate the issue. Even the doctors may not understand African ailments! That was an excerpt from a black history month poster in a top tier Canadian university. Look at the extent of that oversimplification, the nerve! We need to get into the system and start being reckoned with - social work, doctor, pharmacy, police officer etc. We need more of our folks going into the mix, that is one of the most effective way to advance our community. 1 Like |

ferfer: Until the lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter. True- we need to get into the right places and build wealth, open/run businesses, become landlords (controversial, but needed), restaurant chains, franchises, investment banking e.t.c. People might not like you, but they'd respect your cash. For example, despite having a good diasporean community, there are not many Nigerian restaurants abroad. Talk more of exquisite ones- i.e places where you could book a dinner and take workplace colleagues to experience top- notch Nigerian cuisine. Even in England, you'd hardly find a Nigerian restaurants where other top ones are located. It takes time and we need the critical mass but we also need to be ploughing in the right direction. 2 Likes |

SIRTee15: Hello, thank you for this. My husband and I look forward to moving to Edmonton next month. Please, what do you think about the city as regards job? We are going as a PR and we have been looking for an affordable accommodation (preferably a shared apartment to start our life) but haven’t seen. Please, we welcome all inputs. Thank you |

jedisco: I’m Calgary based, and this was a one off incident. There was a massive train breakdown during rush hour, which led to an unusual accumulation of people at this station, and buses were deployed to ease up the situation. Unfortunate that people did not queue up and follow order, but just want to add that this is not an everyday occurrence out here. 2 Likes |

Kenn55:For all the talk about whites being racist, in today's world, black people would enjoy, and actually do enjoy, better and higher economic opportunities where white people are in charge than any other group of people. As Black people, the closest whites allies are Anglophones starting with white Americans, then British and so on. Black people who say the white man is racist are clearly ignorant about other groups of people. In fact, it's because of this group of white people that makes other groups to share similar economic opportunities to black people. 8 Likes |

Hosea148: Good context - again shows the folly in seeing everything through racially tinted glasses. I can't even imagine that amount of people waiting for a bus in London or any English city. Without good crown control, chaos may likely ensue. Though somewhat cultural, you can only look at English footbal fans and all their fighting to realise What I find funny is while in a hurry to point fingers, the chap shared a link that exposed his own identity. Classic case of one finger pointing at others and the remaining four pointing at you. 2 Likes |

One more thing It's very erroneous to think that criticising bad faith "jeets" is because we are jealous of them, or we blame them for "imaginary failures" in our lives That's the framing Jedisco is trying to put out here, and it is a very delusional thought process We fled third world countries for a reason, when you see traits of that manifesting where you fled to, then it becomes an unsettling thing, because when the backlash and xenophobia comes, all of us go "collect" Framing it as "we" are "jealous" of "them" hence the "bashing" we bash them is ludicrous. And I'll be honest without shame or hold back I don't feel sorry for what's coming for them (we have started seeing the signs but ppl who choose not to would not see it ) These guys have been mercenary and racist to us, and it's high time they got the taste of their own medicine. That Indian woman who got that black boy locked up in dubai Her life go still spoil, let the boy come out of jail fess. 1 Like |

The worst treatment I have gotten are from low quality Indian people Now I always make the distinction because some of them are good , and the good ones don't even fuvcck with the bad ones What I went through when I was neck deep in SIA business, its story for another day. Anyways Nigerians are now coming into it more in the North here, and it has become FIGHT TO FINISH |

aestake: Canada should do the US model of country caps Indians were able to overwhelm UK and Canada because of no country caps You want diversity and you are giving half of your visas to one country (does it even make sense) When you mix it up, integration becomes easier But because you have taken 3m Indians in 5 years, now you have two block cultures at logger heads Now the (idi@tic) Indians for Trump moved for country caps to be abolished, so that they will unload their people on the US to the detriment of other groups And that was when the MAGA cult pounced on them and ushered in the onset of the anti India bigotry they are facing today See how dem boot omolomo Vivek lol 1 Like |

RodgersAkpafu: RodgersAkpafu: I am not diminishing reported racist experiences you had which have left you bitter. However, you'd struggle to get wider/rational engagement on this issue if you are more focused on using slurs/spreading hate. Even leaders of civil right movement knew how to about rallying . If we can't/wouldn't say it in person, then we shouldn't write it online My question which you've failed to answer is this: what are you doing about it? And in same vein, what should we do about it? P.s. Easy with the threats. It might seem an anonymous forum but as we've seen, every now and again, people expose their identity and stuff can be traced back to you. |

I pointed that out to you and rather than being grateful and quietly deleting it, you're huffing and puffing. It's like posting my port here and accusing someone of looking at it. Hehe If you were not so preoccupied with hating Indians, you might have noted that earlier. The fact you still sound aloof is rather surprising. BTW, the links you posted are still on here and anyone in the world can click on them and get back to your profile.
