Following social media backlash, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election has made a u-turn over his controversial comment on the alleged collapse of the national grid.

After a power outage in some parts of Lagos on Saturday, January 11, 2025, which many erroneously attributed to national grid collapse, Obi, in a tweet said the incessant fall of the grid which happened 12 times in 2024 has subjected Nigerians to 'untold setback and hardship.'

According to him, despite borrowing over $3.23 billion in the last four years to fix its electricity problems, the recurrent occurrences of grid collapse have continued to characterize Nigeria’s power sector.

Obi's comment, however, sparked a flurry of reactions on X formerly Twitter, as many Nigerians criticized and accused him of not ing issues before reacting to them.

Following Obi’s comment, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) clarified that the outage was caused by tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho lines indicating that the claims about grid collapse was fake news.

Amid the backlash, Obi reversed his stance, saying his initial comment was based on reports from reputable media platforms.

Quoting his earlier statement, Obi in a follow-up tweet said he has learnt that there was no grid collapse following TCN’s clarifications on the matter.

He tweeted: "Following my earlier message regarding the alleged collapse of the National Grid, which was based on reports from reputable media platforms, I have since learned that there was no such collapse. Instead, the incident involved the tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho lines, which affected the Lagos axis.

The former governor of Anambra State, therefore, thanked the TCN for their prompt clarifications, saying "I sincerely hope we will prioritize enhancing our infrastructure in the power sector and remain committed to improving power generation to meet the growing needs of over 200 million Nigerians."

Several more cases can be sited. But the root cause is wrong information.

Mr Peter Obi is consistent with broadcasting false information with suspicious glee.

Last year, Abdul Ningi lied that Tinubu was implementing a budget different from what the National Assembly ed. Peter Obi, without even doing a simple Google search to the claim, went on Twitter to sew a meaningless thread to accuse the government of fraud. When it was clear that Abdul Ningi lied, which earned him a suspension, Peter Obi never apologized nor recanted.

Only recently, someone accused him of crossing the line over inciting comments he made and told him to manage whatever he got from his propaganda. Peter Obi came the next day to accuse the person of threatening his life and the life of his family.

Until today, he has not explained to us how his life and the life of his family were threatened. What specific threat words were used? His followers desperately tried to use ChatGPT to convince themselves that there was a threat.

Without establishing any threat, the victim (Felix Morka) was cyberlynched and people asked for his house address.

Do you recall that judges were threatened in this country?

Only yesterday, Peter Obi latched on social media news about national grid collapse. Only to realize the news he promoted was false.

Despite being wrong, he didn't find any need to say: "I am sorry for misleading the public".

Dear Nairalanders, how is Peter Obi fit to lead this nation when he incites his followers with broadcasting false news, lies, and shameless propaganda?

As a politician, he ought to have a direct line to editors or senior journalists. One phone call could have prevented the embarrassment. But no. He rushed to tweet for political advantage.

Until today, he has not taken responsibility for losing the 2023 election. INEC has been blamed, IREV has been blamed, judges were blamed.

Peter Obi is responsible for everything he puts out there irrespective of who advices him. Once he saw the mistake, he could have said he was sorry.
