You didn't share your tech stack and your city so I can't really say anything in regards to the job hunting. You can apply for this https://obsidi.com/academy/ though
For nursing, check out after degree nursing Lakehead Uni, U of Lethbridge, U of Calgary, LPN from Norquest College
Tried the Obsidi website. Unfortunately they need a Canadian work permit and I'm a student

It's so sad how Canada is luring professional immigrants under the pretext of a labor shortage, but in reality, it's a struggle to get jobs in those fields. As a result, many skilled immigrants end up taking jobs below their qualifications or in unrelated fields just to make ends meet, leading to underemployment and frustration.. This is a pure modern immigration "Ponzi scheme" and an intellectual scam!

Did mine last December. I followed the instructions on the High Commission’s website and had no issues. New port was sent to me in less than 3 weeks.
Did you have to travel to Ottawa at any point?

10 years when you get approved as a PR.
You need stronger ties like education and/or work in Canada. If not, you may not get the visa.

You touched on a few things,
1. Job hunting: The challenges of job hunting in Canada in recent years is widely known. However, there are jobs. You need to be more specific, tech is wide and accordingly it is the sector with the most job opportunities at the moment. Job search is like a full-time job these days, and every resume and cover letter must crafted like the best. There are also tons of posts on this thread that address navigating as a new comer. You may take time and go through as many previous pages as possible. Just off this you inquiry here, I'll advise that in your job applications you need to write more concisely and remove unnecessary information.
2. Going into nursing: Considering your background and experience, first thing off my head will be a diploma or certificate in health informatics or something related. This is purely because you have a microbiology degree and interest/experience in tech. You can see a variant of that in unis, colleges and polytechnics across provinces. It doesn't guarantee a quick job but it is solid with huge prospects. Nursing is also a good choice because you have the background. I must also add that since I have been here, I haven't seen an unemployed nurse (they may exist though I haven't met one). So it is something you'll do and start working immediately. If I were you, I wouldn't go for anything beyond 18-24 months period of study.
3. Funds: Whether you are jobhunting or studying, you need to feed and pay bills. So for any option, you need some form of income to be stable. For study, you can get some loan and grants that could be sufficient for a single student. That shouldn't stop you from casual, part-time or student jobs, so you'll be fine.
I wish you all the best! If you specify your area in tech and province, I believe more people can offer informed advice and I may also say more.

Intellectual scam? Will you like to go back to where we all came from?
I don't think k any of us were promised automatic jobs.
We are all from a 3rd world country, not everyone will be lucky to come and start at same professional level he or she was at in Nigeria, in Canada a 1st world country.
Most people will have to start afresh, or start at a lower level, or even go back to sch.
No one lured us, we all searched for better environment and found Canada.
There are success stories all around. My frnd was a bug guy in Halliburton years ago in Nigeria when he left and started as a security man because you cannot practice engineering without licence here. After his licensing he got 180k role and after two he realized 180k is too small for him. Today he drives truck and owns two trucks and decides how much taxes he pays as a business owner. Will u say the country has scammed him?
If we are complaining, what should Doctors do? After years of study and they have to write exams for three years? Nurses have to write exam as well?
There is a reason they say they want highly educated people, people who will come face the challenge and intellectually carve a way for themselves and survive. Not because there are jobs on the street waiting for us from Nigeria.

Tech is broad. And it’s super saturated now. But what area of tech and how many years of experience in it do you have?
Do you have a strong digital footprint that reflects your tech experience and skill set, besides submitted resumes? Are you getting interviews or you are not even getting any interviews at all?
If you came on study permit, your hours to work are limited. It doesn’t have to be tech but yea, you know best. It is a very competitive market out here and there are techniques besides just sending resume.

lol. Labor shortage. Maybe that’s the lie the immigration agents keep telling people on social media. There is no labor shortage anywhere and canada is not luring anyone. People make choices to come because canada has multiple pathways. Sadly when pple who are here say the truth about what is on ground and how difficult it can be everyone keeps bashing them.

I dnot know if you arrive canada escaping poverty ,jobless nd hunger in Nigeria but sorry not everyone arrives in Canada in desperation. Many immigrants come through legal avenues like the Express Entry system from different part of the world , which is meant to address labor shortages and often attracts highly skilled professionals from around the world. These individuals are often thriving in their careers before immigrating, only to arrive and face a reality that can feel disheartening and misleading.
The Canadian government and various online sources like job bank but in reality 90% of job posted on jobbank is either fake or old create an impression that professional opportunities abound, but upon arrival, many immigrants find that the situation is different from what was portrayed. While some may be content simply to leave their homeland regardless of job prospects, many come with the expectation of meaningful employment in their fields based on the Canadian government's recruitment and labor data.
Addressing the flaws in Canada’s immigration system, particularly the mismatch between expectations and realities, is challenging when discussing with individuals who may approach it with bias, sentimentality, or lack of objectivity like you. It is important to recognize these complexities and advocate for a more transparent immigration process that aligns better with the professional aspirations of new immigrant!
The recent plan to reduce immigration over the next three years highlights significant issues within the system, despite attributing the decision largely to housing shortages. Rising unemployment remains a concern, with many skilled professionals, such as computer scientists, resorting to driving for Uber just to survive. Although classified as "employed" for tax purposes, these statistics overlook the issues of underemployment and the mental health struggles immigrants face. Many are forced to switch careers simply to make ends meet, such as a computer scientist retraining as a nurse out of frustration, which raises concerns about the quality and ion of professionals in these roles.

Lol, if you came in via express entry like I did, you are certainly not trying to escape poverty or joblessness or hunger. Yenyenyen lol.
Just maybe its those who came in escaping poverty that actually hustle to make something for themselves while those who came in with no desperation or fighting spirit are waiting for jobs to call them. Like I said, just maybe, not 100% correct.
There are issues with the immigration system, YES, but no doubt people are thriving.
Computer scientist you say, how about Doctors/medical consultants with years of experience driving Uber or working in Shelter? You read book reach these ones?
Like I mentioned, the mindset matters, that's why for express entry they seek out highly educated people with years of experience on their job and in being flexible, not to whine continuously but to intelligently crave a niche for themselves and survive. If the jobs you are searching for is not coming you pivot intelligently, you do survival jobs to "survive" to keep the light on while u keep working towards where you want to be. It may take months or years, but you keep pushing, never giving up.
It's a Nigerian doctor that put down payment for a 41 unit multifamily house last month valued at $6m in Edmonton, but his first two years here he was working Shelter interacting with homeless, drug addicts and flying back to Nigeria to maintain his licence at the same time, he did not whine about. It's an IT clouds guy that I know bought 6 single family houses this year. He was originally a banker in Nigeria but has successfully pivoted his life. Dude dey ride Porcshe EV 2024. You think say he no struggle and hustle before he pivoted and wrote exams to be where he is in his $1m house in Keswick Edmonton.
Let's keep whinning na.
I will be three years here next year, yes I did not do survival jobs before I got my first job in banking, but I realized banking wasn't for me and I pushed further to get an almost 6figure role in govt and also picked up a survival job making extra cash even with an almost 6 figure job, why? I had a plan to buy my second house and plan achieved, and I left the survival job.
You want a table laid before you like a king in Canada? politics and keep advocate for change like others are. Next week, I'm meeting with the first Black Speaker of the House, Hon. Fergus.
Baba, meet people, connect, network, hustle, no whinning.
There are issues with the immigration, YES.
There are issues in Nigeria that made u leave your lofty position to move to Canada? Yes.
Choose your issues and work it out. Issues dey everywhere, lol.

even if you don’t get a job in your field you still get a port after 3 years plus high standard of living. When you compare with the immigration policies or countries like UK and USA. Where u have 60-90 days to find another employer or leave the country. Its a no brainer. Plus the PR allows you stay in your country for 3 years in the next 5 years. No one was forced to come. 🤭
Most of the people i came to Canada with 5 years ago have found their feet. A former colleague for example became chief risk officer of big company this week.
Economy has been tough due to mismanagement and too much immigration but it surely will get better when this Trudeau loses as expected next year.

One guy I dey follow to learn work for real estate, he is a fuxking nurse!!
He has stopped nurse work and doesn't care about his license, to enter home construction business, baba say na $1.5m he is looking for to set up his own home construction company/business. Na 2024 Escalade he drives, bought cash, no financing.
This place is a level field for everyone to restart and push and live to their dreams.
The guy I mention who bought 6 houses this year said he asked his wife to stop working and do some courses in property management, so that she can manage there properties and take care of the kids while he is still working.
I refuse to complain but push and find ways to help my bottom line. Now I houses for sale even without realtor license for a commission.
People coming to me to sell life insurance, I had to research this life insurance and find out they make up to $3k for any permanent life insurance they sell. Bro, I am studying to write insurance exam now, $150 just to sell insurance to myself and earn the 3k and I can sell to others.
Rather than complaining and whine, I keep looking at the brighter side, looking for opportunities and talking to people.
Guy, multifamily investment property for sale in Edmonton, I'm your plug.

Just be prepared to be accused of being an Uncle Tom. That is the funky name new immigrants get for voting Conservative Parties in the West even those who call names don't know how and where the shoe pinches.
P.S. It was actually the Conservative Party in Canada that reformed the Express Entry sometime in 2015.

Your response highlights a common issue in the way we talk about the immigrant experience, especially within the Nigerian community. Often, when one or two people find success, it can lead to victim-blaming of the thousands who are facing difficulties, as if they aren’t doing enough or aren’t smart enough. This attitude is all too common and dismisses the real challenges that many immigrants face.
It’s important to celebrate success stories, but let’s not ignore the reality for the majority. The system can be unfair, and thousands of new immigrants genuinely struggle to find suitable jobs. But often, as Nigerians, we hide our struggles and celebrate small wins as though they reflect everyone’s experience in Canada. Your examples of a doctor or tech professional succeeding can feel like an insult to the many who are still struggling in silence and making huge effort and still could not get a much desire job or any level of financial freedom!

There is no hatred toward them, but a change in mindset and behavior is needed, as they are not the only group of immigrants in Canada. This year, many Indian students protested across Canada, demanding PGWP extensions and PR with a sense of entitlement. Now, concerns are rising over potential clashes between Sikh and Hindu communities in Brampton, Ontario, Following violent incidents by pro-India activists on November 5, of the Sikh community began patrolling the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Malton Gurdwara in Mississauga, armed with defensive items such as bats, clubs, sticks, and swords. In response, the government has started taking action; for instance, on November 8, it restricted the Student Direct Stream, which previously eased visa access for Indian students.

In groups where I am with Nigerians, we no even like JT again.
Make I get citizenship next year, na PP/conservative i will vote for.
One thing I like about this country is that when people complain they try and adjust, JT didn't get many things right but look at his reform in regards to immigration, they have adjusted it, they introduced many incentives for FHSA to be able to afford a house after the whole unaffordable housing issue, I'm not sure I would be voting for any of them though they're almost the same to me so may the best win
But for provincial why are you voting conservative when they removed insurance cap, now insurance fee is skyrocketing, they have been delaying the green line LRT for Calgary folks, when Trudeau added carbon tax, they also added their own tax to gas per litre, Alberta isn't for liberal though but there's still NDP

Thanks for re-affirming this. Sometimes I wonder if some people are just real estate agents trying to sell properties by using few examples to paint a picture that the dream of all immigrants is to work their a$$ off just to buy multifamily houses and 2030 cars.
The truth is, most professionals who left Nigeria to Canada just want to have a professional career and live a peaceful, comfortable life. Unfortunately, a large percentage of immigrants are unable to break into their desired career after 5 years, despite working so hard. A sharp contrast to what obtains in the neighbouring US who even have higher wages and lower housing costs. Let us it that immigrants face serious challenges in Canada, and the job crises and underemployment are real! Stating that fact is not whining.
Boasting of 2/3 jobs or working day and night to make a living is not success, in my humble opinion. It was Tuco Benedicto Pacífico Juan María Ramírez in the movie " The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" that asked "if you work for a living, why do you kill yourself working?"
