triplechoice: ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PUNCH Lite 15 states yet to pay N30,000 minimum wage – CSO 19th October 2023 BudgIT By Temitayo Jaiyeola Kindly share this story: Fifteen Nigerian states have yet to implement the N30,000 minimum wage for their workers since it was signed into law in 2019. This is as organised labour unions are set to push for a further increase in minimum wage following worsening living conditions in recent times. According to BudgiT, even though 15 states are yet to implement the minimum wage of N30,000, the 36 states of the federation grew their cumulative personnel cost by 13.44 per cent to N1.75tn in 2022 from N1.54tn in 2021. Also, these states grew their overhead bills by 23.42 per cent to N1.24tn in 2022. The Civil Society Organisation disclosed this in its newly released ‘The States of States Report 2023.’ The organisation highlighted that the 36 states of the federation grew their revenue by 28.95 per cent from N5.12tn in 2021 to N6.6tn in 2022. Commenting on the composition of the revenue, it said, “Put together, the Internally Generated Revenue of the 36 states appreciated by 12.98 per cent from N1.61tn in 2021 to N1.82tn in 2022, denoting a strengthened domestic revenue mobilisation capability. Nonetheless, the IGR to GDP ratio remained very low at 1.01 per cent. The increase in IGR did not reflect across board as 17 states experienced a decline in their IGR from the previous year while 19 states recorded positive growth. Related News Budgit scores Tinubu low in fiscal transparency SERAP, BudgIT, others sue CBN over cybersecurity levy Enforce laws with human face, coalition urges govt “Occasioned by a 49.2 per cent increase in global oil prices, growth in federal transfers rose by 35.68 per cent from the previous year to N4.05tn, despite a 12.55 per cent drop in crude oil production,” States’ reliance on the revenue from the Federal Government grew to 61.45 per cent in 2022 from 58.4 per cent in 2021, BudgiT noted. Despite their revenue struggles, the 36 states spent N8.2tn in 2022, more than the N6.58tn they spent in 2021. Despite the struggles of these states, organised labour recently issued a two-week deadline to governors to commence negotiations on the N35,000 wage award for workers in their states following the of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Federal Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the Trade Union Congress. State chapters of the NLC and TUC handed down these ultimatums on Tuesday and said they had written to the governors. Recently the Federal Government agreed to pay N35,000 to all federal workers for six months beginning from September. One of the NLC state chapter chairmen who spoke to The PUNCH, The Kano State NLC Chairman, Kabiru Inuwa, said, “We have written to the government requesting for the payment of the wage award to workers in the state and we are still waiting for the government to respond.” Other states’ chapters of either the NLC or TUC that confirmed they had written to their governors include Gombe, Rivers, Benue, Ogun, Katsina, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Kwara, Kebbi, Bayelsa, and Delta. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Sun News March 28th, 2024 So, in a meeting comprising the of the tripartite committee, the organised labour, employers, state and federal government representatives, in Abuja, the chairman of the committee, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji urged the to work for the progress and development of the country. Recall that after a long-drawn battle between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on a new minimum wage, the then Labour Minister, Dr Chris Ngige announced N30,000 minimum wage at the end of a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by the former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. He informed that FEC also approved that payment of N30,000 minimum wage be effected from April 18, 2019. Unfortunately, over 15 states could not pay the wages due to low revenue. The states yet to implement the N30,000 minimum wage are: Abia, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Niger, Borno, Sokoto, Anambra, Imo, Benue, Taraba and Zamfara. Also, over 70 per cent of workers in the private sector are yet to receive the N30,000 minimum wage. |

Tinubu must have thought governance is just about taxing the people heavily and extorting them through multiple taxation. He failed to see the big picture that is why his govt is failing. It is not a bad idea for Tinubu to resign because obviously he and his team are overwhelmed. |

Omoapena:nope I disagree with you here, 150k to 200k is pretty ok and good. At least if Fg ascend to it, a family of 4 will survive the hyper inflated Tinubu economy. Tinubu never reduced his salary and allowances, Tinubu never cut cost. Soon he will submit his proposed supplementary budget to the National Assembly for ascension. Fg should yield to the Labour unions demands. |

the worst gibberish I have seen on nairaland is this article by tonyebarcanista. Will u have said this if u are salary earner from the government? We should never write with selfish interest. God is my witness I'm not a salary earner but I know the impact of new minimum wage on the salary earners and the multiplier effects on the populace. With the level of inflation in the country the new minimum wage is long overdue and if nothing is done a huge percentage of Nigerians will live in abject poverty in a couple of years. The increase in inflation rate as result of the new minimum wage cannot commensurate with the rate of impact such increase will have on the standard of living of the people/ per Capita income. |

Texs: This is what TonyeBarcanista and Nigerian s fail to understand - purchasing power index. Nigeria is 4th from bottom on purchasing power in the world. It simply means Nigeria and Nigerians do not have enough purchasing power to stimulate an economy. That's why multinationals are leaving in droves. Somalian and Libyans (countries at war) have more purchasing power than Nigerians. When multinationals want to invest in a country, they look at the purchasing power of its citizens. N60,000 ($42) minimum wage per month is extremely poor. 3 Likes |

Increase the damn minimum wage. Tinubu government will only have himself to blame when things get worse in his government. Fg and State government as it stands have the capacity to pay the new minimum wage bill except we are deceiving ourselves here. Paying #60k minimum wage is the worst if it all. It can’t even buy a bag of garri |

Jayhome24: Our little knowledge in Economics tells us that there is no way the government can stabilise the exchange rate now without a commensurate increase in the national productive capacity and export. Also any unconditional opening of the national borders will only flood the country with cheap and low quality products from other country, therefore destroying our local manufacturers. However the country is still relatively rich, let the wealth be equitably distributed by considerably jacking up the workers living wages to at least N120,000 to ameliorate their suffering. |
MT: 3:58pm On Jun 03, 2024 |
press9jatv: Your knowledge of economics is appaling. Earn the 60k, you will still cry over hyper inflation. Instead for NLC to fight against corruption and ensure they put a system in place to track it, you are fighting for increment in salary. It is a matter of time, you are coming back here to cry |
kingsways: 3:59pm On Jun 03, 2024 |
MT: It is not the job of NLC to do that. They can only insist, and they have the right to insist, on getting a fair wage for their services in line with prevailing economic conditions. NLC can’t stop Tinubu from removing subsidy for example, it was the job of the voters to stop him at the last election because he informed them ahead that he would remove subsidy |
JASONjnr(m): 4:01pm On Jun 03, 2024 |
TonyeBarcanista: I didn't want to engage you but I really have to... I hope you know that this very istration have removed subsidy in almost everything... From fuel to electricity down to tuition fees. Meaning, the FG is now controlling it's funds and because of this, we have inflation causing high increase on almost everything. This has affected lots of businesses as well.... To balance this up, the government should cut down from it's expenses... Reduce politicians salaries. Increase workers pay.... And balance all salary structure across the country... You know that the organised labour only want something reasonable from the government. You need to be reasonable and not the organised labour. |

One will think that this piece makes sense till you realise the only in it made was the sense in nonsense. The inflation rate that skyrocketed between the last one year was it a rise in wage that caused it? If the cause is removal of fuel subsidy then that would mean govt has extra income from not paying subsidy which should be used to increase wages simple. But in the midst of the hardship lawmakers took procurement of new vehicles including ministers and top govt functionaries, pay of judges whole rigged election tribunals were increased by 600%> Then enter the workers, they should be the ones with the economic cap on. If you don't got nothing good to say, don't say nothing |

triplechoice(m): 4:09pm On Jun 03, 2024 |
MT: I'm afraid your understanding of economics is not good enough. Economics says that when minimum wage is increased it will help boost the economy. An increase in the purchasing power of workers due to wage increase will results in the demand for more goods and services which favours local businesses that will pay tax to the government to increase government revenue. Manufacturers will also increase productivity to meet up with the surge in the demand for what they produce and wouldn't mind to reduce their prices so they can easily and quickly sell of they excess products they're now flooding the market with due to an increase in demand. Employment will also results from such increase productivity as they will need more hands to work with them. So it's not what you think. You people are only seeing one thing and blind the benefits of an appreciable increase in minimum wage. The government"s attention is more focused on stealing what they can before their tenure expires and so don't care to listen how minimum wage can help the economy. "Make I chop my own Na My turn. No be me go make Nigeria better " That's the mentality of the average Nigerian politician in power. Modified. When manufacturers produce more it will increase supply to the market, and an increase in supply will definitely results in lower prices in the long run |

MT:you are just displaying your ignorance and hypocrisy here. Even before Tinubu came to power last May, we have been into inflation and recession, it’s Tinubu renewed hope economy that make it worse and drive us into hyper inflated economy. Now he has to borrowed over 20T naira to save his economy. Upon borrowing huge amounts of money, they are still living large and lavishing Nigeria commonwealths into frivolities. Labour unions demands is very important and Fg should ascend the demands before things get worse. This same clueless and heartless government never want progress on Nigeria workers and it’s people. They removed the fuel subsidy without much noise, paying the state governors much still they are angry on the proposed new minimum wage bill by the Nigeria workers, if not because they are heartless in their doings, they should have increased the new minimum wage bill to #200k or #150k. That 60k is highly unrealistic and unjustifiable here. A bag of rice under Tinubu hyper inflated economy is more than the #60k self. |
