Bro, at 60k minimum wage, cost of commodities will increase significantly, workers will be laid off, people will suffer. NLC is misguided

Do you ever process your thoughts before you post?
60k minimum wage means people can spend more. Demand will rise... manufacturers will be incentivized to increase supply... translates to more jobs which translates to more taxes for the government.

Companies are shutting down and leaving because cost of production is rising and demand is thinning out

My 8 year old niece knows this!

Stop make posts about things you know absolutely nothing about.

Dear former brother Barcanizer, how many episodes did you write when the idiots bought yacht, signed for & paid Trillions for renovation of unnecessary & unneeded official houses both in Abuja & Lagos. We did not hear your voice when they signed for & paid N212Billions for 1125 Street lights, Tillions for foreign SUVs. Tonye, we did not hear PIM from you when they signed to BARCANIZE Pension funds. Brother Barcanizer, have you also ed the chop & keep mum like Omokry, Bwala, FFK & other PDP sellouts? How much did they pay you to betray your people, Tonye?

Don't twist how things are. Inflation has always been increasing with or without increase in minimum wage. Increase in minimum wage is just to help ease the pains of inflation.

Have they even thought of the small businesses and schools. They seem to believe that no one will see the line of causation.

People seem not to understand that this minimum wage for Nigeria not Federal government.

They started out with a ridiculous offer and from there the result was certain.

Why naira now exchanges for 1500

Are the masses the cause?

Idiot

All these are between 200% to 500% increment compared to NLC requesting for 1000% plus increment.
This is not reasonable Sir/ma'am
They should come together and draft out the amount that can be used to compensate this as a minimum wage instead of this unrealistic amount

Hnmm. But it was easy to increase fuel from 220/Lt to 700/Lt. It was very easy to increase university tuition from 25k to 300k.
It's very easy, tell Tinubu to return everything back to the old pricee and we forget about new wage increase

Don't mind the dimwit. FAAC allocation increased to over a trillion after they stopped subsidy and floated the currency. This is from as low as 450m in 2021.
Where's the difference of that money going to?
They should reverse everything if they don't want to pay a livable minimum wage

I agreed 100%. The NLC should be about fighting corruption but they can not because they are part and parcel of the corruption in Nigeria. The aim of the NLC is to cause unrest because their own part LP did not win, hence this is about politics and not about the welfare of the working people.

When 15 of the States can not pay the current minimum wage of 30,000, how will they be able to able to 495k the useless Ajaero is advocating for, and inflation that will follow. It makes no sense but then as part of the Obizombies, Ajaero lack sense (both common and innate).

Have you considered those who spend all their salaries on transportation alone?

Have you considered the increase in house rent?

Have you considered the high cost of living while the standard of living is low?

Have you considered the low per capita income while price of essential commodities are always flying?

My bro, economics is very simple for those who understand it. The inflation you mentioned is already in existence. Increase in minimum wage won't have significant impact at the moment.

Let there be price control, don't suffer the labourers, they are poorly paid!

You need to go back and read economy, if government should approve 400k as minimum, that means cleaners on the road will start earning 400k and factory workers will start earning 400k and for employers to meet up with this amount, they have to increase the price of whatever service or products they render and sell and this will make everything expensive, pure water is being sold for 50naira per 2 as of today but will turn 500naira per one.

15 states yet to pay N30,000 minimum wage – CSO

Kindly share this story:

Fifteen Nigerian states have yet to implement the N30,000 minimum wage for their workers since it was signed into law in 2019.

This is as organised labour unions are set to push for a further increase in minimum wage following worsening living conditions in recent times.

According to BudgiT, even though 15 states are yet to implement the minimum wage of N30,000, the 36 states of the federation grew their cumulative personnel cost by 13.44 per cent to N1.75tn in 2022 from N1.54tn in 2021.

Also, these states grew their overhead bills by 23.42 per cent to N1.24tn in 2022.

The Civil Society Organisation disclosed this in its newly released ‘The States of States Report 2023.’ The organisation highlighted that the 36 states of the federation grew their revenue by 28.95 per cent from N5.12tn in 2021 to N6.6tn in 2022.

Commenting on the composition of the revenue, it said, “Put together, the Internally Generated Revenue of the 36 states appreciated by 12.98 per cent from N1.61tn in 2021 to N1.82tn in 2022, denoting a strengthened domestic revenue mobilisation capability. Nonetheless, the IGR to GDP ratio remained very low at 1.01 per cent. The increase in IGR did not reflect across board as 17 states experienced a decline in their IGR from the previous year while 19 states recorded positive growth.

“Occasioned by a 49.2 per cent increase in global oil prices, growth in federal transfers rose by 35.68 per cent from the previous year to N4.05tn, despite a 12.55 per cent drop in crude oil production,”

States’ reliance on the revenue from the Federal Government grew to 61.45 per cent in 2022 from 58.4 per cent in 2021, BudgiT noted. Despite their revenue struggles, the 36 states spent N8.2tn in 2022, more than the N6.58tn they spent in 2021.

Despite the struggles of these states, organised labour recently issued a two-week deadline to governors to commence negotiations on the N35,000 wage award for workers in their states following the of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Federal Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress, and the Trade Union Congress.

State chapters of the NLC and TUC handed down these ultimatums on Tuesday and said they had written to the governors. Recently the Federal Government agreed to pay N35,000 to all federal workers for six months beginning from September.

One of the NLC state chapter chairmen who spoke to The PUNCH, The Kano State NLC Chairman, Kabiru Inuwa, said, “We have written to the government requesting for the payment of the wage award to workers in the state and we are still waiting for the government to respond.”

Other states’ chapters of either the NLC or TUC that confirmed they had written to their governors include Gombe, Rivers, Benue, Ogun, Katsina, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Kwara, Kebbi, Bayelsa, and Delta

You have said it all but many think it's about shouting look at the current cost of food imagine what will happen to minimum wage increase that will lead to higher inflation Zimbabwe story may even be a child's play and some to of it the NLC controls less than 30% of the labour force because 70% are of the private sector and individuals so what's going to happen when they can't pay will be forced to shut down and increase unemployment

Zimbabwe's case was due to economic sanctions imposed on them by western nations and not just because they increased minimum wage.

This man stop writing nonsense.

If increase in salaries will lead to inflation, how do you expect workers to cope with the inflation that already happened due to subsidy removal

It is common sense that the price of labor should increase to match the general price increases that happened in the economy

It is obvious that, by their fruit you shall know them.
Why are you wasting your energy to comment.

The "general price" cannot be matched by increasing salary, it will move up by default.

Be ready to buy 1000 naira bread for 5000 naira or 10,000 naira.

When has this PDP astute defender becomes an economic analyst? This is one of those preying to castigate the APC in near future should the istration fails to meet up with a reasonable new minimum wage for the workers in the country.
At present the government has not increased the workers salary yet the rate of inflation is skyrocketing every day. So in what way do any one tries to link the economic problems we are facing with the issue of new minimum wage demands? Even the naives know that the incessant increases in the prices of goods and services in the country is the major cause of agitation for salary increment as cost of living is increasing day in day out, with depreciating purchasing power of common Nigerians. And this has always been the case anywhere. It's natural that people asked for wage increment when their purchasing power is eroded by inflation. Thus, most countries set time period for review of wages of their workers . For ours, it's after every five years time.
Saying that there was never feel of inflation in the country in 2000, even though we can hardly forget the global economic meltdown of the year 2000, is typical lie by someone who always wants to project his Otta boss as the best thing that has happened in the country. Let him gather those indomie generation in his compound and tell them that story.
The real people who want to help the government in its effort to tackle our current woes should look for the real causes of the inflation and stop misleading it, saying wage increment will aggravate the inflation.

That request is just a starting point of Negotiation.... The Union truly knows that is not possible but a fight to get a reasonable value for the minimum wage.

All subsidies removed and nothing to added to the citizens income.....
That Fg proposed #60k is highly unrealistic and unjustifiable. At least if Fg proposed a wage bill of #150k to #200k, it will have been fine and justifiable. But that #60k is worse of it all. A bag of rice presently isn’t #60k not to talk of bag of beans and wheat in the market. Fg should do the needful by increasing their proposed wage bill further. The strike will be long if they are slowing things.

How do we survive all that....
