twinskenny:Thank you @twinskenny for that info. Buildings don't just collapse it's impossible except it's a supernatural occurrence such as earthquake. This building would have been showing signs, the Engineers, masons and others on site would have noticed it.but what did they do.They ignored the red flags. My condolences goes to those that might have lost their lives. Pls let's do things right in this country. |

walexProjects:I know it's not an earthquake. We're not on the fault line of the tectonic plates. My concern is, what led to this should this building was built with standardized materials and experts |

twinskenny: When all this so called Lagos state officials like money more than safety, this is what you see.. when an engineer what to jump on every project even when the funds arent enough, this could also be the end result. |

twinskenny: Hmmm.. But is it even possible to build 20 storey buildings without an Engineer? A competent one at that. Who will interpret the structural drawings? The vibrations from the collapsed building would have most likely caused issues on the other structures. 1 Like |

KolaShangOne:I see smaller structures being awarded to construction firms not just an "engineer" Who will even risk his money just like that? People cut corners true true but I don't believe it's in projects like this 4 Likes |

Nero2424: Seems It is sad but was inevitable. The building has history ... ‘Preventing Calamity’! Gov. Sanwoolu Seals Gerrard, Ikoyi High-rise https://www.thecapital.ng/higris/ What could have warranted such an order? Findings show that Lagos State Government is miffed with the property developers and owners for embarking on such a project without subjecting it to procedural approvals from the state government and other authorities vested with the mandate to ensure compliance with standards and quality. In other words, the massive project has been sealed for lack of approvals from required quarters, as Lagos State Government has risen stoutly and promptly to halt the gargantuan project. According to an inside source who spoke in anonymity, the State Government took the action to seal the building in order to ensure that what happened with Lekki Gardens Estate when its on-going six-storey building collapsed on March 8, 2016 would not be witnessed again in the state. “It is unheard of that the owners of the Ikoyi project in question would embark on such a capital intensive project without obtaining required approvals for a project as massive as that. Gone are the days of negligence on the part of the government when people flout the law. Sealing up the project is law taking its due course |

This is sad, very sad indeed. As suggested by many here, we will have to wait for the investigation report to know the true cause of this calamity. But are reports ever published in Nigeria? Do people get punished for the compromises that lead to loss of life? I am not too hopeful that we will learn from this, since we didn't learn from the previous occurrences, including the Synagogue. Political interference always trump's the health and safety of Nigerians Anyhow, what we must not forget is that our government do not seem too concerned about the quality of products in use on Nigerian projects. Even made in Nigeria rebars do not comply with global standards upon which engineers rely for their design and specifications. This has always been a concern for me. 12mm, 16mm, 20mm rebars never have the d diameter. You can pay for a particular sized bar and be supplied something less than that yet you are expected to take it and not complain. Everyone accepts that as normal behaviour and the regulatory agencies do not care. SON should have some blame in this. This will, unfortunately, not be the last occurrence until we start holding ourselves able. 3 Likes |

EgunMogaji2: Sir, Cocoa House is very very safe. It was built by competent people at a time when standards were strictly adhered to. I would not have any problems doing anything in Cocoa House, but would worry myself sick going inside a modern 6 storey building. The slide into depravity that we have embarked upon in Nigeria in the form of the worship of money, howsoever acquired, is what is the root cause of these calamities. 1 Like |

babadots:I was discussing the issue of quality of iron few days ago. If you need 10mm rod now, you need to buy 12mm rods instead to get something close to true 10mm. My heart goes out to all the families who lost someone in this avoidable incident. Imagine that whenever people say happy new month, you will your dead loved one 1 Like |
