There are strong indications that President Goodluck Jonathan has relieved Police IG, Hafiz Ringim, of his
duties.

According to Villa sources who confided in Vanguard, the President summoned the embattled Police chief to his office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja Wednesday morning for a brief meeting, following which Ringim was told his services would no longer be needed.

The meeting between Jonathan and Ringim which reportedly lasted over thirty minutes, caused an unusual delay in the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

Vanguard learnt that President Jonathan directed Ringim shortly after the meeting to immediately handover to his next in command and proceed on compulsory retirement.

IGP, Hafiz Ringim

Although the Force Headquarters in Abuja could not immediately confirm Ringim’s sack, it also did not deny it
as the Deputy Force PRO, CSP Yemi Ajayi, told Vanguard: “I cannot confirm that yet.”

Before today”s ill-fated meeting with the President, Ringim was seen at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday evening with some big wigs, ostensibly to prevail on the President to lend Ringim more grace.

Sources told Vanguard that the President, who hitherto condoned the slips of Ringim because the police chief was due to retire in March this year, could not however pardon Ringim’s recent goof involving the escape of Kabiru Sokoto, the Boko Haram suspect linked with the deadly Christmas Day bombings in Madalla, near Abuja, which claimed over forty lives.

The President’s initial soft spot for Ringim, it was learnt, may also not be unconnected with their close ties right from the days when President Jonathan was deputy governor and governor in Bayelsa.

Vanguard also learnt that aside being abruptly relieved of his duties, Ringim may also be quizzed by the security
agencies to divulge all he knows about the controversial escape of Sokoto.

It could not be immediately ascertained who is likely to succeed the embattled Ringim yet.

Secure divulged that former Inspector General of Police MD Aubakar is likely take over as the new IGP.

MAIDUGURI—THE Boko Haram sect has given reasons for its weekend attacks, which led to the killing of about 162 people in Kano State, saying it was to avenge the persecution of its .

Spokesman of the group, Abul Qaqa, made this known in a telephone interview with newsmen in Maiduguri, yesterday.

Claiming responsibility for the attacks and multiple bombings on police stations, State Security Services, SSS, and port office buildings in Kano metropolis, Qaga said: “Last night’s (Friday) attacks and bombings of Kano city followed our warnings in the second week of December, 2011.”

‘We warned Kano stakeholders’

Besides, Qaqa also referred reporters to an e-mail message in which Imam Muhammad
Abubakar Shekau, Spiritual Head of the sect, threatened that: “Unless urgent steps are taken, the group will launch endless and violent attacks on Kano and its environs because of arbitrary arrest and persecution of his .”

Vanguard learnt that in the said e-mail, Shekau said the group had written an open letter to the people of Kano, including the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero; Governor Musa Kwankwaso, Alhaji Aminu Dantata and Khalifa Sheikh Isiaka Rabiu on recent happenings in the ancient city.

Shekau revealed that but for the intervention of some prominent scholars in Kano, his group would have made the city ungovernable a long time ago.

Alleges persecution

Qaqa said: “The message here is that everybody knows that a lot of our people were killed in Kano State, especially in Wudil town. We had perfected plans to take revenge but some notable scholars intervened by pleading with us.

“They also assured that our would nevear be persecuted again and we took them by their words. Unfortunately, however, about five months ago, security agencies began trailing and arresting our who are carrying out their legitimate businesses, alleging that they are all thieves and armed robbers.

“Again, we perfected plans to attack the city of Kano but the scholars pleaded that we should not. They advised that we should write a formal letter of complaint to some notable people. We agreed and sent letters to the Emir of Kano, Wamban Kano, Dan Masanin Kano and the governor of Kano State.

“We also posted the open letter on the internet, but nothing was done to stop the persecution of our .

“Recently, security agencies launched a fresh onslaught on some of our in Kano city in which even women and children were not spared. Many houses were raided and a pregnant woman was manhandled.

‘We respected Kano’

“Some of our were tortured with electric shock. All these things happened in Kano, a city that we hold in high esteem.

“We have varied opinions about Kano, including the option of launching endless campaign of violence, but the scholars that have been talking to us are still persuading us to tarry a while.

“We are compelled to write this open letter so that the world will know what is happening.”

Aso Rock Earmarks N5billion To Furnish Mrs. Jonathan’s Ngo Hq …She also Sacks Govt. Parastatal From Office

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Abuja, a parastatal established by a government Gazette in 2007 was on Wednesday sacked by the office of the First Lady to give way for her pet project.
It was gathered that three-quarters of the office complex has been re-allocated to the African First Lady Peace Initiative, a non Governmental Organization of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
It was authoritatively gathered that the Director-General of the Institute, Dr. Joseph H.P Golwa was summoned to the Presidential Villa, Aso Rocks, Abuja and given matching others to evacuate two-third of the Institute’s staff from its operational base.
Shortly after the Aso Rocks meeting, it was gathered that some officials of the office of the First Lady visited the Central Area office of the Institute in company of a white man suspected to be the contractor contracted to rehabilitate the Institute’s building.
The contractor, it was gathered, was told to create a separate gate, reception and other conveniences for the First Lady for a contract sum of N5 billion. Presidential sources, however, claim that the renovation of the building was awarded for N500million.
The contract, Saturday Life learnt, was not captured in this year’s budget, besides, the office of the First Lady is not known to the First and Second Amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
We were reliably informed that the ejection order served staffers of the Institute dislocated four Directors, the whole of the s department and more than half of the Institute’s researchers.
The affected directors include the Director of Research and Policy analysis, Director of Democracy, Director of Defence and Security and the Chief ant of the Institute.
“Right now, one wing of the Institute has been taken over. They took over the main gate, the parking spaces and the reception area. You will be sorry for our staff as the white man came and gave us 24 hours to pack our office equipment. The Directors were so helpless but they could not say a word for fear of being victimized”, the source stressed.
Attempts to speak with the Chief Press secretary to the First Lady, Mr. Ayo Oshinlu on his Glo mobile number that ends with 806 were unsuccessful. He refused to pick his calls since Wednesday but a Presidential source informed Saturday Life that the issue was a closed one adding that the attention of the First Lady is being channeled towards an International engagement in the first quarter of next year.
Some civil servants in Abuja wondered why the First Lady did not consider buying a property with the money budgeted for the renovation. They argued that Late Mrs. Maryam Babangida used the money she realized from her NGO to build the Women Development Centre located adjacent the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
Wife of the late maximum dictator, General Sani Abacha, Mariam, through her NGO build the now popular National Hospital, Abuja, it is located near the bombed United Nations House, Abuja. Late wife of Former President, Stella Obasanjo built a structure and began operation at Bwari, Abuja for her NGO, Child Care.
The pattern was, however, altered in the case of Hadjia Turai Yar’adua as several billions realized during the launch of her pet project, and meant to address health challenges of cancer patients allegedly went to her private purse. She is currently hibernating in Dubai.
Dame Jonathan’s NGO had early last year attempted to forcefully take over part of the land allocated to the National Judicial Institute, NJI, along Jabi- Airport road, Abuja.

Ngozi Okonjo Iweala buys N1.2billion Abuja home
Wednesday, January 11, 2012

As Nigerians groan over fuel subsidy removal, one of the proponents and architect of the controversial policy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has just purchased a massive home in Maitama, Abuja for a whooping N1.2 Billion, pointblanknews.com investigation has revealed.
The Finance minister allegedly paid for the property located at No 3 Nwaora close, off Gana Street, Abuja in November 2011, according to a source at the Property Management office.
Okonjo-Iweala through a United States based company owned by her brother Chi-Chi Okonjo-GeorgeTown Consultancy, allegedly pocketed about $2 Billion in commission in the last debt buy back deal under the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s istration.
Pointblanknews.com sources hinted that Okonjo-Iweala forced her brother’s firm, down the throats of the Finance Ministry, and even the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), under Mallam Naisr El-Rufai when she was minister under Obasanjo.
On that Nwaora close, off Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja, are five massive properties with price tag between N1.25 Billion and N1.4 Billion.
“We still have other properties worth N1.25 Billion, N1.3 Billion and N1.4 Billion. The one we sold to madam was for N1.2 Billion,” an Estate agent with EFAB Properties confided in Pointblanknews.com.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was a Managing Director of the World Bank.
From June to August 2006, she was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, overseeing Nigeria’s External Relations. From July 2003 to June 2006 she served as Minister of Finance and Economy of Nigeria and Head of Nigeria’s much-acclaimed Presidential Economic team responsible for implementing a comprehensive home grown economic reform program.
“J” level employees, or vice presidents of the World Bank earn about $289,540. Senior vice presidents and managing directors who have made it to the “K” class received as much as $311,000. The president’s pay, when you include expenses, lands in the mid-$400,000 range.
The Coordinating minister’s mansion, is a 7 bedrooms duplex with boys quarters and a swimming pool, a massive Masters Bedroom with an adjacent bedroom dubbed “ Madam’s Bedroom. The mansion, which is still unfurnished, could wear a tag of over N2 billion after furnishing. It has a red clay roof
The property is complete with top shelf marble imported from Italy, gold trimmings and chandeliers in the living rooms, bedrooms and a very expansive kitchen.
Sources told pointblanknews.com that the property was built by a popular Abuja estate mogul, and owner of EFAB Properties Limited, Fabian Nwaora.
A source at the EFAB Properties who referred Dr. Iweala as “Madam”, told Pointblanknews.com that the mansion was the first to be purchased among several others in the estate.
“Madam paid for the property long before others were even completed and so that one is out of the market. We only have the ones on No.1, No. 2, No. 4 available.”
That deal led to her sack by the Obasanjo’s istration, when he discovered that Okonjo-Iweala made tons of cash from the deal at the expense of Nigeria. She was removed from the economic team, and redeployed to the Foreign Affairs ministry.
Aside from Chi-Chi Okonjo who gets multi-million dollar contracts in Nigeria without due process, through his sister, Ngozi, another very close friend of the finance minister who gets patronage is Bimbo Ogunseitan.
In 2004, She sent a letter dated March 18, 2004, HMF/FMF/003, addressed to Mallam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai, OFR, Minister of the Federal capital Territory, saying:
“I am in receipt of your letter dated 15th March 2004 requesting an approval for a RUNNING OPEARTIONAL REVIEW ROR) on the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory’s Operations.
In your letter you stated that a consultant would be hired to review the internal organization processes of the FCT and the day to day finances of the FCT.
2. Please accept this letter as an approval for the Running Operational Review on the request indicated above.
3. Do accept the assurances of my continued highest regard.
Yours Sincerely, (Signed) Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Finance.”
Pointblanknews.com learnt that the minister As Minister of Finance under the government of Olusegun Obasanjo, Okonjo-Iweala, steered public contracts to her brother worth up to $50 million, with the help of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai, yet another WikiLeaks US cable issued in 2006 says.
The contracts were said to have been awarded to the man, identified only as “JonJon,” for consulting work for the ministry.
Previously, she pursued a 21-year career as a development economist at the World Bank, where she held the post of Vice President and Corporate Secretary. This included two tours of duty (six years) working in the East Asia Region, the last tour (1997-2000) as Country Director Malaysia, Mongolia, Laos and Cambodia during the East Asian financial crisis; two duty tours in the Middle East Region, the last (2000-2003) as Director, Operations (deputy vice-president) of the region. Dr Okonjo-Iweala also served as Director of Institutional Change and Strategy (1995-1997). In this post she assisted with the implementation of the Bank’s reform agenda. From 1989 to 1991 she was Special assistant to the Senior Vice President, Operations, an assignment that enabled participation in high level policy formulation and discussions for countries as diverse as China and Burkina Faso.

Four days after the deadly Christmas Day attack on St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, the President met with his security chiefs in Abuja yesterday.
He ordered the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Andrew Azazi and other security top shots to fish out sponsors of Boko Haram.

A source said security shake-up is in the offing.
The parley is aimed at providing effective response to Boko Haram, which claimed responsibility for the attack. The Islamist sect had warned of the bombing days before it struck. The security agencies were criticized for the alleged lapse. Death toll from the attack has risen to 43, while 45 were hospitalised. Rising from the top level security meeting yesterday, a source said there will be operational restructuring, that is likely movement of personnel, total overhaul of security network system to give them a bite.

The President warned that henceforth, nobody will be spared for failing to act on information provided to member-security agencies.
According to the source, the President warned that government would not spare any security officer who fails to act promptly on any information concerning the activities of the terrorist group.“Go after those involved in this heinous act. We must stop this Boko Haram madness, ” the President was quoted to have directed the security chiefs. President Jonathan had on Wednesday night told leaders of the Christian Association (CAN), led by Pastor Ayo Oritshejafor of imminent overhaul of the security apparatus.

He told CAN; “The terrorists are human beings, they are not spirits, they live with us, they dine with us. We know them, people know them. As long as Nigerians are committed to expose them, we will get over this ugly situation.“At the security level, we are doing our best, we will restructure, we will re-adjust and make sure we get a team that will meet with the challenge we are facing today”.
As President Jonathan spoke, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim, who was part of the meeting, assured Christians of their safety during Cross-over church services on December 31, 2011. He disclosed that security agencies have arrested some suspected Boko Haram even as the IGP was seeking evidence to arrest and prosecute their sponsors.

He was soliciting public towards apprehending those sponsors.
Ringim also urged Nigerians, especially Christians that would want to attend the Cross-over services in their churches, to ignore the threats by the sect to bomb various churches on New Year’s eve as his men were on top of their game to foil such attempts.
The IGP, while pleading with the public to co-operate with security agencies and volunteer information that would lead to more arrests however, added that the efforts made by the police in Yobe, Kano and Kaduna states prevented a catastrophe that would have taken place if they had not acted swiftly.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after the emergency security meeting at the Presidential Villa, attended by Gen. Azazi; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice iral Ola Saad Ibrahim; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Umar; Director-General, State Security Service (SSS), Ita Ekpenyong and Director-General, Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA), Olaniyi Oladeji; Ringim said President Jonathan expressed concern about the security challenges in the country, hence, the reason for summoning the meeting to review the situation “where we were, where we are now and where we need to be, that is what we discussed”.

On why it was so difficult to tackle the insecurity issue, the IGP replied: “Well, we are all worried; terrorism is not an easy matter at all. Terrorism is everywhere, all over the world, particularly here in this country. As you are aware, it is a very new phenomenon here. We have not had this kind of thing before and we are just having it now. So, we are all scrambling to find our feet and face it squarely. That is what we are doing.

“Security agencies, and most importantly the police, have made a lot of gains which have not come to the fore. I want to seize this opportunity and talk to every one of us to remain resolved and resolute to in the fight against this cankerworm that will not leave anyone of us if we do not put our acts together. What I mean by putting our acts together is by Nigerian Police, security agencies and you, journalists, as well as all of the public. This is something that should galvanize us in our quest to remain together and also to bring down the scourge”.
On how prepared the police were for December 31 Cross-over night, he replied: “I assure you, we are doing our possible best. We are prepared more than ever before and I want to assure you this; that if we had not done what we did in Yobe State, if we had not done what we did in Kaduna State; indeed, if the Nigerian Police had not done what we did in Kano State, the recovery of the primed-up suicide bombing vehicles, the story would have been a different one. I assure of the public that the Nigerian Police and indeed, all other security agencies are now ready more than ever before to face these challenges”.

Asked the number of people that have been arrested so far, Ringim said: “The arrests of these terrorists had been going on for a long time. Many, many of them have been arrested and many of them are in detention. They are in the process of being prosecuted. The issue is not the number of arrests; the issue is the co-operation that all the security agencies need from each and every one of us in order to get to the bottom of this matter.“So far, we have arrested hundreds of them but that is not the issue, these people, to my mind, are just the foot soldiers and we need to get strong evidence through the co-operation of of the public so that we will be able to get to the leaders, masters and organizers of these people”.

Asked to react to agitations by some Christians to resort to self-help, the IGP pleaded: “Definitely, people are agitated and of Boko Haram terrorist group are not attacking only Christians. They attack everyone that is on their way, including of the Armed Forces and the police and other security agencies. From among us, there are Muslims and there are Christians.
“I don’t think it is a case of Muslims versus Christians or Christians against Muslims. That is why I am urging each and every one of us in this country to come together to lend a hand so that we can fight this scourge. We have seen how our country has lost through the non-co-operation of the people. It is only when we come together that we can fight this scourge,” the police boss said.

the babies

mimima(f): 8:26am On Dec 21, 2011
By Shola Ogundipe & CHIOMA OBINNA
For most couples, the birth of a baby elicits joy. For some, the birth of twins or more elicits even greater joy and gratitude but when a woman is safely delivered of quadruplets (four babies) or quintuplets (five), her joy is supposed to be boundless.

Such is the case of Mr. Wale Shofunlayo and his wife, Olayemi who were blessed with a healthy set of quintuplets weekend at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.

According to Wale, the couple’s joy is immesureable as they did not prepare for five babies at a go.

As a Lawyer, Wale is under no illusion about the birth of their quintuplets. To him, the birth of the babies confirmed the adage that “Doctors care and God heals. ”

*The babies

Before the babies came, the couple had prepared for quadruplets as the doctors’ investigation including comprehensive scan showed that there were four babies. But little did they know that posterity had another plan for them. A gift, which could be described as the best Christmas gift anyone could get at a time like this.

Vanguard gathered that the middle aged woman who gave birth to two boys and three girls was said to have been in the hospital since last June waiting for the arrival of the babies that finally came last week Friday.

Doctors at LUTH had recommended bed rest from the seventh month till delivery.

The delivery, which was taken by over 50 active medical personnel at the hospital all started like a fairy tale when the first, second, third and fourth baby came and the leader of the medical team, identified simply as Professor Ajayi discovered that there was still ‘something’ in the womb.

Apparently confused with the fact that all the while, medical examinations continually show only four babies, the experts almost jumped to conclusion that what was left must be fibroid tissue. But thanks to experience, that made them hesitant in terminating whatever may be there or seal up the opening without further probe.

Further check thereafter showed that the fifth baby was actually on the way. Each of the five babies weighed at least 1.5 kg while the biggest weighed 1.8 kg.

Narrating her experience to Vanguard, Mrs. Olayemi whose joy knew no bounds described the delivery as a pleasurable experience and surprise package from God.

Olayemi who was still recuperating said, “I and my babies are fine. I was expecting four. After everything, I found out they were five”.

In a chat with Vanguard, father of the babies, who declined comments on the possibility of an Assisted Reproductive treatment said “We have a 2 -year -old -boy already but to have the quintuplets is God’s doing. Our first baby was delivered at Lagoon hospital. I’m a Muslim and I give glory to Allah for this rare blessing. It is not every day one is blessed with five children at a go.

“We have heard of instances of two, three, or four babies at once, but this is the first time I would hear about five and I feel so elated to be the one to have this number. I feel great, I feel happy and I give all glory to Almighty God without him nothing can happen.

“We were actually expecting four babies according to the scan. The doctors said there were four but God showed Himself and added the fifth one. They are two boys and three girls, he said.”

Wale, who would not reveal whether or not he and his wife went through assisted reproduction, is optimistic about the future.

On his reaction when he was told that his wife had five babies, he said:”I planned to have many children and my prayer is to provide for them to the best of my ability. I am not just knowing my wife was pregnant with multiple babies, we had been told there were four babies like I said earlier, and my wife has been on bed rest in the last seven months. I know God is there for me and my family”.

The Ogun State born Wale who was full of gratitude to the medical personnel that attended to his wife at LUTH, said “I must specially thank Prof. Ajayi for his experience. An inexperience doctor would have sealed up the opening or terminate the last baby”

He described the quality of care given to the babies as excellent. “I give kudos to the nurses and doctors who attended to my wife and babies. I am more than satisfied with their services.

Asked if he is financially comfortable with the development, Wale said’ “I will not say it is the duty of government to take care of my babies. I don’t have the intention of begging with this publication but if anyone feels like helping it will be welcome.

I don’t like going to people and being turned down. Even as a Lawyer, we don’t , I don’t see the reason why I should do that because of these babies.

“But being human no one can have it all, so any assistance is welcome but that is not to say we will go cap in hand begging for aid. I have a job I’ve been doing for 19 years and God has been faithful”, he added. In the views of the Public Relation Officer of LUTH, Mrs. Hope Nwalolo, the birth of the babies was not the first case of multiple birth recorded by the hospital. According to her, the delivery took less than 30 minutes as there were experienced medical professionals on ground.

What experts say about multiple births

Multiple births are a type of multiple birth in which the mothers give birth to two or more offspring from the same pregnancy. The occurrence and frequency, however, vary dramatically.

In the views of a fertility expert, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi of Nordica fertility Centre, Lagos and Asaba, “Factors such as maternal age, socio-environmental factors, increase in the use of contraceptives, the race of human population, increase in the spontaneous abortion rate, and seasonal variations are among the factors that could influence multiple birth including twinning (two babies), triplets (three babies) and quadruplets (four babies)

Assuming they are alive, Nigeria’s first known multiple birth babies (sextuplets) would be 103 years old today. Historical and medical records show that the birth of the first set multiple babies in Nigeria dates back over 100 years ago to 1907 when an unnamed 19-year-old woman from the South East region was delivered of six babies in a row after a short labour.

Although it is not known what their male/female sex ratio was or how many of the babies eventually survived, the event, like that of the controversial multiple birth babies, elicited as much drama, and graphic insight as to just how demanding all multiple births can be.

For several decades, multiple birth has been a regular feature in Nigeria. Multiple births refers to the delivery of twins and higher order multiples (eg, triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, etc). Multiple births occur when multiple foetuses are carried during a pregnancy with the subsequent delivery of multiple births. Specifically, since the late 1970s, the prevalence of multiple births in Nigeria has been increasing.

A combination of factors including the widespread use of assisted reproductive techniques and advancing maternal age at conception is associated with this phenomenon. Records are scarce, but it is believed that a plateau in the prevalence.
