I'm in search of a mini flat in or around Lekki Phase 1. The ideal property should be new or renovated, in a pay & move in condition. Please get in touch if you have one available.

Thanks

Very informative post. AlvinPlatinga and others have given very insightful advice here. I'd just like to add this: be absolutely clear on what you want to achieve with your studying in the UK. If it's just to get out of Nigeria, there are cheaper ways of emigrating instead of killing yourself to pay the exorbitant international student fees. Also, keep your eyes on the end goal: do you want to do the UK Msc in order to get a job. Have you done your research and are you sure the Msc will improve your chances in your professional field? These are some of the questions many people fail to ask which may lead to them being disillusioned at some point. There are many Nigerians here who are doing care jobs with MBA degrees. There are also Nigerians here who are working with JPMorgan Chase smiley.

@Poster: Please read and reread Apache77's post well! He has essentially given you the most practical roap for the trip. @Apache77: kai, u sabi this route wella, I hail you oh!

Back to poster: eat precisely where Apache suggested, cos once you've gone past Akure, the food is crap. But be sure to try out some of Abuja's delicious grilled fish, they're pure heaven. The only thing I'd like to add is; bear in mind that 9ja roads are not like Europe. You can suddenly happen on huge craters in the middle of the road without any warning. I'd get someone who knows the road to drive the car, if I were you. Lastly, try to avoid travelling at night either way, especially between Lokoja, Abaji and Gwagwalada cos Nigerien/ Chadian robbers sometimes prey on travellers on that road. And they are much more deadly than 9ja robbers!!!!

All the best!

@OP: Tanimola22 and Dayo1401 have given you the best advice you could ever ask for. Them and the guy in Dubai as well. It is only in Nigeria that Phd is a big deal, and unless you want to chart a career path in academics, even that might not be an advantage in Nigeria. Work experience weighs a lot more than certificates in the job world, so I can understand why the Dubai guy earns higher than his colleagues with Phds.

Fully funded Phd positions are really not that difficult to get. What may not be so easy, are probably getting into specific institutions that have the industry links you desire.  I think you have a golden opportunity with the job offers you have, which give you the opportunity to garner some work experience. The importance of work experience cannot be overemphasized. I know people (including myself) who have Masters with distinctions, merits in the UK who are still searching for jobs. Conversely, I know some one else who finished with a and now works with HSBC. Difference? Some element of luck perhaps, but also previous banking experience from Nigeria.

I was also considering a Phd in the US (majoring in marketing) but sound logic from Tanimola22 has made me stop in my tracks. I hope you are able to  make the decision that is best for you in all of these.  May God help us all.

It shouldn't be so difficult to find the guys. Hasn't the girl herself been identified yet? If she has, then she should be able to identify them. Meanwhile, those guys deserve to be shot dead!

I don't know why people make such a big deal out of nothing! What's the big deal in living on your own if it is more convenient for you? That a girl lives alone doesn't automatically mean she is loose; I think such mentality is very backward and ill-exposed. You can still be under your parent's roof and be wayward if you so choose, it all depends on the upbringing and background of the girl in the first place.

I'm still trying to figure out why Obj decided to pay the family a visit. Is he giving a tacit approval to the activities of Boko Haram?

Why they always associate fraud to being Nigerian? Human beings are human beings and people who want to be fraudulent will do so regardless of what part of the world they are from.

@sleekman: I agree totally with you! How can anyone say there's no advantage to being Nigerian? There are countless reasons to appreciate being Nigerian.

@Beowolf: God bless you for telling it exactly as it is. This is sooooo true. My story is virtually the same as yours, except that mine was in the UK. Thank God it has become a story now. It's all good to want to study overseas, but please have a very concrete plan and if possible, plans A, B & C. Don't as in DO NOT come on faith!!!!!!!!!!!

@Pukkah: It's been so long since I commented on facebook, I've even forgotten how to insert qoutes. I would have love to insert yours here. Very well said! So well said I had to to commend you. Religionists, the bane of virtually all conflicts.

carmelily:

something very funny is going on in this thread. cheesy wink
Looks like the Christians, Muslims and Hindus are now on the same team and the Atheists are the "enemies" and children of satan. On some other topic, they would point fingers amongst themselves, trying to say their own sect is the only legitimate one from God and the others devilish. Funny.

So now is it agreed that they are all the same and the only ones "already on Satan's side" are the Atheists?

Word! There can be unity if we all so choose

@bindex

Hello bro, I really appreciate your question. It's time we stopped swallowing everything our parents/ teachers/ society teach us hook, line and sinker. Our society taught us to believe in witches, wizards and all what not. I doubt if there is any Nigerian family that doesn't have one tale or the other to say. it is so bad, some of us are even taught to avoid certain tribes because they are "traditionally diabolical." It's a good thing you're so well travelled. I think what obtains there is a pointer to the fact that individual reality is relative to individual consciousness, and societal reality is relative to their collective consciousness. If Europeans don't believe in witchcraft, how can they have witches then? What you don't believe in does not exist for you, simple. If witches exist here, it is because we created them. How? Through our beliefs, solidified over time, from generation to generation. Contrary to popular belief, believing is seeing and not the other way round. If you believe in something, it will take root in your sub conscious and once it does that it will manifest sooner or later. So collectively, does the Nigerian society believe in witches?

@Bicey:
Thanks bro. I thot i was d only one who felt that way about preaching in buses. And some of the responses i've read here just goes to show how mightily intolerant some people can be of other people's religious leanings. I mean, for heaven's sake there are other religious adherents in this country: Eckists, grail messengers, traditional believers etc whho go about their business without imposing on anybody. Of course, some people will be quick to say those ones are satanists, abi? Crap!!! Only God knows who's really worshipping him.

I still don't want to believe it is true. I'd like to read the interview, not on Linda's blog but in the newspaper or magazine it was published.

But if it is true, well it's a real shame, not just on Frank but also on a relationship that has been on for years and has produced kids. It's a real shame.

Perhaps what we need to find out is; 'has anyone been called after the interview?' I did the screening test and was called for the interview in Abuja. After the interview, everyone was given transport money back to wherever they came from. That doesn't sound like a 419 thing to me, The only thing is I haven't heard from them since then and I don't know anyone who has.
