4:1. When Mordecai learned all that had happened, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city. He cried out with a loud and bitter cry.
4:2. He went as far as the front of the king's gate, for no one [might] enter the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
4:3. And in every province where the king's command and decree arrived, [there was] great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

THE MESSAGE:

'Burden' is defined as a heavy and difficult concern, about a situation, person or group. It can come through information, interaction, or enquiry (Nehemiah 1:2-4; Esther 4:1). True burden always leads to one taking steps or action toward finding solutions to the situation. When Mordecai learnt about the plot of Haman to kill the Jews, he had a great burden which led him to bitter crying and wearing of sackcloth and ash at the gate of the king, his duty post. Nehemiah did a similar thing, when he got information about the unacceptable state of his hometown, Jerusalem (Nehemiah 1:2-4)

Both Mordecai and Nehemiah cried because of a negative condition, and thereafter, took steps towards seeking solutions which resulted in positive changes. Unfortunately, some Christians are not concerned with seeking necessary information about their relations, communities, country, or Church. What they do not is that they can be the Mordecai or Nehemiah of their generation. Negative situations around us should lead to a prayer of burden and practical steps to seek a solution (see Psalm 137). We should never relax in our comfort zones and forget the suffering of our people. God is looking for a Mordecai to motivate the Esthers of our generation to destroy the plans of the enemy in our families, office and nation. Will you be an available instrument today?

*TEXT:* JOHN 18: 28-40 _*(NKJV)*_

18:28. Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the over.
18:29. Pilate then went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?"
18:30. They answered and said to him, "If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you."
18:31. Then Pilate said to them, "You take Him and judge Him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"
18:32. that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die.
18:33. Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"
18:34. Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?"
18:35. Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?"
18:36. Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."
18:37. Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say [rightly] that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
18:38. Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all.
18:39. " But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the over. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"
18:40. Then they all cried again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.

*MESSAGE:*

From the High Priest, Caiaphas, the next place Jesus was taken was Pilate's Court. Pilate was the Roman Governor who had the right to proclaim a sentence of death on Jesus. The Jews being under Roman rule, could not sentence Jesus to death. Pilate had to examine and interrogate Jesus to know if He was guilty as accused. It was during Christ's trial, in verse 37, when Pilate asked Jesus if He was a king that Jesus answered that it was for such purpose, reason or cause that He came into the world. Jesus made it clear to Pilate that his kingdom was not of this world. Despite the status of the persons Jesus was dragged to and the false intimidations, Jesus never lost focus of who He is and the purpose of his coming to the world. He had a clear understanding of purpose and destiny.

The question then is: For what purpose were you born? Myles Munroe said that:- _"when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse becomes inevitable."_ Until we are able to provide a clear answer to the question of purpose, our lives will not be impactful or meaningful. For us to face the challenges life comes with and live a fulfilled life, the issue of purpose must be understood and cleared, knowing our assignment in life is key to living a victorious Christian life.

TOPIC: THEY BOUND JESUS
READ: JOHN 18:12-23 (NKJV)

18:12. Then the detachment [of troops] and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.
18:13. And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.
18:14. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
18:15. And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so [did] another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.
18:16. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
18:17. Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also [one] of this Man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
18:18. Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
18:19. The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
18:20. Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing.
18:21. "Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said."
18:22. And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?"
18:23. Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"

THE MESSAGE:

Jesus was taken, He was bound, and handcuffed. Tradition says,"They and, having bound his hands behind Him, they clapped an iron chain about His neck, and with that dragged Him along" (Gerhard Harm). Five reasons why he was bound were that
(i) they might torment Him, and put Him in pain.
(ii) they might disgrace and put Him to shame. (iii) Slaves were bound, so was Christ, though free-born.
(iv) they might prevent His escape.
(v) They bound Him as one already condemned, for they were resolved to kill Him.

Christ's being bound is very significant; and a mystery.
(a) Before they bound Him, He had bound Himself by undertaking to be a Mediator.
(b)We are bound with the cords of our iniquities (Proverbs 5:22) with the yoke of our transgressions (Lamentations 1:14). Christ Himself, being made sin for us, to free us from those bonds, submitted to be bound for us. To His bonds we owe our liberty, His confinement was our enlargement; thus the Son makes us free. These enabled Paul and Silas to sing in the stocks, and Ignatius (one of the early Church fathers) to call his bonds for Christ, spiritual pearls.

PRAYER: Thank You Lord for becoming sin for us that we might be set free. Amen
