To those who always ask how political decisions affect the price of garri, below is one of my favorite quotes from Bertolt Brecht ,but I have to paraphrase it to fit into the Nigerian context.

"The worst illiterate is the political illiterate. He hears nothing, sees nothing ,takes no part in political life and always asks how political or economic issues affects the price of garri in the market. He doesn't seem to know that the price of garri, the cost of living, the price of beans ,of flour,of rent,of medicines all depend on political and economic decisions. He even prides himself on his political ignorance, sticks out his chest and asks how events affect the price of garri in the market. He doesn't know, the slowpoke, that from his political non-participation comes the thieving PDP politicians, the crook-in-waiting ACN politicians, the religious bigots at the C and the lackeys of exploitative multinational corporations"

So next time you want to ask how political and economic news affect the price of garri, think again.

Kobojunkie: Railway is the one ministry I know has been working since 2009. This is one ministry that ought to get kudos when it comes to getting work done.

Railway is not a ministry ,its under the ministry of transport.

where is this afam power plant?

any info on it?

Afam power plant is a gas powered plant in Obigbo, rivers state.Guess it was built by shell .I before before Nnaji became minister of power, his company (Geometric) was in talks with Afam IPP to extend their gas trunks to Geometric IPP somewhere in Alaoji or so.

Maybe his company felt buying Afam IPP was a strategic move, owing to its proximity to a yet to be commissioned Geometric power station. But whatever the case,Nnaji must have resigned out of frustration,or sacked because the allegations against him were to weighty to be true.

His resignation at this point is a huge setback to the little progress made in that sector, the trade unionists, diesels and generator importers must be feeling triumphant and I doubt if the replacement minister would have the same zeal as Nnaji had, having seen how powerfully entrenched interests can rubbish anyone desirous of bringing about a little change in one of the darkest sectors of the Nigerian economy.

To Prof Barth,I wish you all the best in your future endeavors,I always knew from the onset that your interests in Geometric would one day become your achilles heel.I knew you were a businessman, but you were much more a patriotic Nigerian, who believed he had practical solutions to the nagging power problems in Nigeria.I hope and pray the privatisation process would be completed sucessfully without you.

The depth of Rudolf's sarcasm is limitless. But hey,I tend to confirm as days go by, that every human being has a price tag.Abati was just a good writer without any moral scruples,he swayed people with his high moral stand during his days at the Guardian, criticising every government and gaining mass appeal, but alas, he jumped ship when Jona met his asking price.

It would have been better if Reuben had come out clean from the onset as a mercenary ,which in any case no sane person would blame him for ing the govt, since we all know he writes for money and not for the greater public good. His recent write up on GEJ was an indication of how low Reuben has sunk;a man who would write any thrash to keep his job.

Ruby Ruby, enjoy your loot sha, nothin do you, afterall you don try,its time to collect pension in aso rock and gather materials for your book titled " The Cassava Revolution".

I agree 100%.Its becoming rather boring and stupidd and I think the s and owner of this forum tacitly gives to such idioticc threads either because they enjoy it,or because it drives profit for them, due to the huge ionate followership such threads generates. The latter looks more plausible.

Some impressionable peeps here take tribal bashing seriously without realising that the originators of such thread actually do it for fun and would still sit over a bottle of beer without breaking bottles on each others head;tribal bashing could just be a way of having a good laugh and relieve stress after a hard day.

Some names here have become synonymous with tribal bashing that readers are always inclined to see their comments from a tribal point of view, even when it is not. Some have even degenerated to pathetic incurable levels that it has become an involuntary reflex .I can imagine some peeps here shouting IGBO!!!! or YORUBA!!!! in their sleep only to wake up to find they were just dreaming. Its that bad!!!

Very touching post.Congrats on your new job.In my opinion, the ability to land a job starts from your CV and the first impression you give your interviewers either by dressing, gestures or even time of arrival for an interview.

A friend interviewed a young school leaver for an entry position in a modest company with a starting salary of N80K.Guess what, the graduate was clutching three high end phones ; a Blackberry,HTC and samsung galaxy.Your guess is as good as mine on whether he was hired or not.

I would be very surprised if Ojukwu did not leave a will behind, that would be a great mistake on his part.when alive,he must have envisaged his children would quarell over his estate due the circumst ances of their birth. Its not like he died a sudden death,so I expect him to have a properly documented will tucked away somewhere, anything short than this is disaster ,which we are already witnessing.

If there is no will, the elders should call the children to order so they don't dance in the market square and rubbish the Ojukwu family name and all it stands for.

The only benefit to be gained in issuing out new currencies is convenience and nothing else.
However, the downside to this is that it might inadvertently affect our pricing structure and drive lower denominations out of circulation.

There are still jobs in Nigeria, even as I type this. The challenge is that most young graduates all wish to get paid employment with the big multinationals and oil companies while neglecting the obvious fact that competition for such positions are stiff and only 1 in 100 (to be conservative) applicants are likely to get such jobs on merit while the rest would be employed based on community (especially Oil coys), insider and social connections .This situation also narrows down the opportunities for young graduates to be employed on merit.
My advice to graduates is :do not neglect little paying jobs,as long as its in the line of your chosen career, but while you are on it,develop yourself by getting additional qualifications like masters,ICAN ,CISA or any other relevant qualification that can boost your employability. Also to those that are still in school, take your industrial training (IT) seriously ;all these little things might be all you need to get that big Job in the future.

For those who are unaware,Power industry is the next "Telecom" in Nigeria and the first to be employed in the power sector after full privatisation and liberalisation would be the biggest beneficiaries.I would advise young graduates to sharpen their skills and prepare for jobs in the power sector.

VoodooDoll: In my limited opinion, Yoruba culture is communal, with an emphasis on social harmony.

Individual rights are respected but the communal goal of harmony and progress supersedes those rights. This is both good and bad.

Good because communal harmony stops one group from dominating another, bad because if the goals are incorrectly set then there will be challenges.

In Yoruba towns, historically, compounds were concentric with the most vulnerable (women, children, elderly and handicapped) in the centre. The vulnerable ones in the centre may not even be related.

The tolerance means that if an individual is a raging fundamentalist (Christian, Moslem, Ifa or other), he/she will find himself/herself isolated or cautioned with continual reminders from elders, siblings and peer group that
communal harmony must not be disrupted. Disruption will see the individual isolated/ex-communicated until a reconciliation is effected.

At least someone has made a reasonable disionate cultural analysis ,not some dumb hotheaded fellows who think the only way to defend a position is to spew bollocks.

Are you so dumb that you always go out of context?.When did "hardcore" become a substitute for "true"?.And what do you understand by "judgemental"?.FYI,these are rhetoric questions and I do not expect any dumb answers that would further expose your inability to read and comprehend.

Acceptance.

Isn't the 5th step. Good boy.

Ok, dummy, let me break down that tiny paragraph for you.

1. Two people of different religion marries
2. Their children later found their own religion.

People often stray from their parent's religion once they're able to find the religion that better suits them. The paragraph did not talk about one person switching to several religion in his lifetime as you ignorantly put in your previous post.

Dude, you would appear more intelligent if you don't talk, you have a dangerously low IQ and I clearly understand why people like you are clearly unemployable cos critical reasoning is highly beyond your grasp. Not even after I had highlited the salient portion for your comprehension, you still stupildly went ahead to type incoherent statements contradicting yourself and your earlier statements!.

Yoruba_Omoge:

That's not the point of the thread. Garbage rants.
The content said nothing about switching from one religion to another. And even if, the ability to step out of one's zone to explore another religious option needs tolerance.

I guess you lack reading comprehension?.Its people like you that read news headlines and make up news without actually bothering to read the full content.Little wonder they say "if you want to hide something from an african, put it inside a book, cos he will never read it".

For benefit of doubt, below is a portion of the main article for your reading comprehension.

Compare that with a typical Yoruba
family. A couple with six children could
have a family like this: the man is a
Muslim; the wife attends the Celestial
Church of Christ; the first child started
as a Muslim but converted to
Christianity and is now a member of a
Pentecostal church; the second child is
a devout Muslim; the third and fifth
children are of the Methodist
or Baptist church; the fourth child
attends no church or mosque but
prefers the Yoruba gods whenever he
has any spiritual needs; and the last
child is an Anglican.

@Topic,

That a man can switch from being a christian to muslim ,then traditionalist does not portray tolerance, rather it portrays a lack of conviction to stick to a particular set of beliefs or ethos.I have seen a yoruba dude who have switched from being from being muslim to christian and has invariably attended all variants of christian churches without any real difference in religiousity or real description of what he actually wants from the churches;I rather find such confusing and I tend to call him a religiously confused man.

I think its something anthropologists should dig deeper to unearth the root cause of such anomalous cultural behaviour. Even the yoruba muslims are not as hardcore as the muslims of the core north as you can find them clubbing and having multiple girlfriends even when islam strictly forbids such and the christians among them are always easily swayed to pentecostal churches hence the rising wave of pentecostalism especially in the southwest;little wonder the major pentecostal churches are lead by Yorubas. It could have something to do with being liberals,as yorubas are naturally are, unlike in the southeast where people are highly conservative ,hence the dominance of conservative churches (catholic and anglican) and inability of pentecostalism to make inroads.

On a flip side, this could represent cultural dynamism and portray the yoruba as a group of people who are amenable to change ,but it could also portray Yorubas as a people who lack real convictions and lend credence to the belief that a yoruba man should not be trusted for his words as he/she is always ready to switch sides, depending on which position favors him most.

He does not even look like a lecturer. Look at his 9 months perpetual pregnancy and look at the type of house he is living in. College professors here in the states are well paid. I guess that is not the case in our dear Nigeria. No wonder many Nigerian lecturers are selling handoust to students to make extra money on the side or sexually molesting the same female students that they ought to be teaching.

From the video, looks like its the lady student apartment.Maybe the lecturer popped in to do short time ,but unfortunately met his waterloo grin
Charlesnerd: 4:44pm On Aug 21, 2012
a1solution: but the video is clear the lecturer its being set up. the lecturer has no case to answer.

I thought as much. But if it was actually a set-up,why was the lecturer ready to offer a post dated cheque and instantly doing the bidding of his captors?.Maybe something happened before/behind the scenes which was not actually captured in the video.

Each time he works past the citibank branch in Trans Amadi road, Port Harcourt, he wonders whether their clients are demons, angels and dead spirits because the place is always deserted. What type of bank is this?

citibank is a multinational bank with roots in the US.Most wire transactions in Nigeria to foreign correspondence banks are carried out by Citi,so many multinational companies operate domiciliary acounts with them too.
