I buy Saffron sometimes to make Seafood Paella and they always come in a little container thingy that's very easy to topple over when opening and when using. It seems many brands package them awkwardly like this. What I do is put the lil' container into a ziploc bag right after opening and I take them out from there. At least if any strands will fall, they will fall in there. Try that next time you buy it.

I made a mistake yesterday and the saffron ( all in strands) I held all fell into the cooking pot as I was trying to separate the strands. I couldn't save them...I just watched as the melted and turned overly orange.
