The book says he proceeds to Oranmiyan shrine where the Ada and Abere are brought from Ife and handed over to him as part of the coronation rites without which he has no authority to order an execution.

That was before the creation of the Western region in 1939. There was no debate because the Ooni was acknowledged by all present as the head. See page 2 of screenshot. It's from the conference of Yoruba chiefs held on March 31st, 1937.

Excerpts from the proceeding at the conference below. The document even talks about their sitting arrangement.

They were having a meeting among themselves for the first time ever not establishing hierarchy. The report clearly indicated the reason, and the common ground, why they had Ooni sitted in that position. Other unclear historical details include why Oyo hosted the inaugural meeting, with Ife hosting the next meeting in 1938.

*Meetings of Obas are not traditional! They do not have meetings. Meetings started under colonial authorities.

Social welfare programs are very important. People demonize these programs because of the poor implementation not the actual objective and possible benefits. No child should be raised in an inconducive environment and that is the key focus of social welfare programs in many countries. Every Nigerian child must be brought up in dignity not dilapidated physical and emotional structures in the name of marriage.

Broad, well researched and well designed social welfare programs are much needed everywhere in Africa.

CHAQUR:
Time for Tinubu to start giving married men allowances.. (Special alla-wy) is necessary at this point.

It is but it is not mandatory.

However, marriage is a sacred institution of utmost importance in molding future generation within the right environment. In other words, it is a very dangerous development when the environment for productive marriage is not present. Both the male and the female must be adequately and intentionally prepared for marriage otherwise we are only multiplying issues within the society. Part of the critical pillars of marriage is the ability of the key parties to provide means of sustaining the daily livelihood of all involved. In the absence of the necessary resources, marriage should be the last thing on the mind. It is not something to toy with or else you are only building structure on a very weak foundation, it will collapse.

Marriage is part of life.

On the other picture.

That was a picture angle from the first ever meeting of the Obas in the old western region. Quite instructively, it was not held at the regional capital, Ibadan. It was held in Oyo at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo. There was no superiority debate at that point, it was just kings of separate kingdoms coming together in a meeting for the first time ever.

They sat, wined and dined together as brother Obas at Oyo palace. No consideration for future scoring of cheap points was part of the equation at that point. Things changed much later.
Amalekki: 3:47pm On May 13
Ooni did not hand over any appointment letter to any Alaafin. The fact that Ooni had no such power other than the time he was a political appointee as Governor-General should already give you a clue that whatever you saw in the purported 1971 picture had nothing to do with authority to hand over letter of appointment.

The picture must be properly researched. In 2052, some kids will post pictures of Ooni of Ife greeting the seated Alaafin of Oyo somewhere in Ibadan in 2025 and include whatever interpretation suits them.

DelilahMakinde:

What an absurd arrangement.
Anyway an Ooni hasn't handed out any appointment letter since Sijuade.
That is the function of the state governors now

Ok ooo...I stand corrected on the wrong dates.

Thanks

How does Oranmiyan being in possession of and moving to Oyo with the Sword of Mercy translate into "Alaafin had to collect Ada and Abere from Ife.." ??

Slytiger:

Yes. Things are changing. In the past, the Alaafin had to collect Ada (sword of state/justice) and Abere (sword of mercy) from Ife to be able to give judgement on execution when he is been enthroned.
Amalekki: 5:22pm On May 12
True. Ooni of Ife simply carry his white bedsheet and ties it around his neck as outfit for his outings everyday...

I think it's better we stop confusing ourselves in this country. If we want to speak English, we select either the American English or British English.

In the United States, they call it program (for department) and course (for subject). They also call theirs graduate studies.

In the UK, they call it course (for department) and modules (for subjects). They also call theirs postgraduate studies.

In Nigeria, we keep switching between the two, confusing ourselves. You see people call department and subjects courses undecided

It's worth the stress

But unfortunately, our beloved country will humble you.

This days, na first class dey do POS, na third class dey withdraw. It's pathetic

Yes, the first part is pathetic as no graduate should be doing POS except for ive income as owner with employees.

The second part is actually normal and expected. Third class folks have always been largely very successful and the reason is very simple. A graduate with third class will quickly face reality and most of them were already prepared for life after school while still in school. They tend to pick a lucrative "low hanging fruit" venture and tend to be the very best and most success driven out of the pool of competitors.

Several years ago, a friend with third class went straight to computer village right after graduation and was already a big player out there within 5 years of hustle. Another raised some funds and went into small scale palm oil wholesale as a middleman. These are big men today and already padded up their CV with online masters degree. Some even went back to their school for post-graduate diploma then masters or business degrees. With that initial third class degree, they faced the real battle of life with little or no entitlement mentality bugging down many graduates.

Regardless, first class definitely makes your life a lot easier with huge advantage getting good job early in life and it's up to you to take advantage of that otherwise the third class guy will eventually employ you. First class must be your primary goal while it's still doable.
