I’m currently studying for my first degree in Statistics. I can graduate with a 2.1 effortlessly, but getting a first-class would require a bit effort. My issue is that I’m already balancing a job, plus I’m feeling lazy and unmotivated about school.

For those who have graduated and have experience about the labour market, please:

Are there any significant advantages to having a first-class over a 2.1?
Did it make a difference in your career, further studies, or job opportunities?

I need real-life experiences and opinions to convince me whether to put in the effort or just avoid unnecessary stress.

Yes, it is worth the stress, please, go for it.

Importantly, it'll give you a maximum satisfaction when you look back to review your school years. , whatever that is worth doing should be done well. And, by chasing a first class, you'll end up having a very good grasp of knowledge as regards your field of endeavour. So, it'll enhance your proficiency.

Secondly, it gives you an advantage over your peers locally and internationally. For example, you're more likely to hit juicy international postgraduate scholarships with a first-class performance.

Please, do all you can to go for it.

And, pursuing a first class doesn't necessarily mean you can't do other things. You can still develop soft skills, do side hustles and all that. Don't let anyone deceive you, please.

Not having First Class means you'd be considered for any opportunity as a second choice after a first class student. It means you're not the first choice, not the top choice amd you won't be the most preferred candidate when placed side by side with a first class student. All things being equal.

If you’re comfortable with that, then second class or even third class should be fine for you

Put in all the effort you can, it'd be worth it in the end.

It's over rated in Nigeria, especially don't try to have first class in Botany or Philosophy, you will end becoming an assistant lecturer with 200k monthly salary.

Brother, learn some skills while you are in the uni and start making money... especially if you are planning to stay in Nigeria.

As a fresh graduate having a First Class guarantees to a large extent that you will be shortlisted for interviews...getting the job then depends on how well you are able to defend it at the interview and prove that you are the best fit for the job undecided

What is worth doing at all is worth doing very well bro, if u can, try get it but if it's above your reach, do your best and pray for God to crown it. First class gives one an edge over other competitors in the labor market, it's though not a do or die affair.

If you graduate with a first class, it will give you an easy start given the saturated job market. But over time, the truly intelligent people will distinguish themselves regardless of grade.
