Defence Headquarters allays fears over UN fighting vehicle


No cause for alarm over presence of United Nations, UN fighting vehicles, equipment in Nigeria, the Defence Headquarters has assured Nigerians.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Acting Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau was reacting to some video clips circulating in the social media about the presence of some United Nations Peacekeeping fighting vehicles and equipment sighted recently in Benin, Edo state.

It said the fighting vehicles and equipment are being moved through the Warri port to the mission area in Southern Sudan to marry up with UN troops who were inducted into the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, UNISFA mission, Southern Sudan last month.

It explained that presently, Nigeria is contributing troops to various United Nations Peace keeping operations, including UNISFA, South Sudan which is commanded by Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr; a Nigerian.

The statement assured Nigerians that ”the nation is not under any threat that will warrant the deployment of United Nations troops in our soil”.

People have never seen UN peacekeeping items in Nigeria and they think it's a big deal.

For your information, Nigeria regularly contributed troops and equipment to United Nations peacekeeping missions between 1960 and 2014. Nigerian Army vehicles are usually painted in peacekeeping colours when they are used for such operations and they often retain the colours many months after they have returned. I have seen this many times over several decades.

Therefore, there is no big deal about vehicles painted in UN peacekeeping colours in Nigeria. That's assuming that those pictures were actually taken in Nigeria.

Nice! Have seen UN utility vehicles around VI, Akure, Enugu, but seeing the combat vehicles gives a different impression since Nigeria is not currently a UN mission battle field for now.

Did I just read "Warri Port"? If the Port at Warri can be functional so much so that the United Nations ships its assets through that age, why then do our brothers from the east side keep complaining about the Lagos Port being the only active Port in the country

I wished those military vehicles were produced here in Nigeria. I tried cheking .. there was no name of manufacturer on them.

No, mind them. We've read severally that Warri, Onne, and ibaka seaport and working optimally. They will still be crying that the federal govt did not allow other ports to work optimally except that of Lagos. What they don't know is that the North consumes more imported goods than the South East with the least population in the country. Assuming the FG government gives their landlocked region seaport which is not possible anyway, is it only their region that they will limit the sales of those imported items to?What these people are doing in Lagos, Im sure they can't try it in Warri or Portharcourt.
