Good evening everyone. To cut the long story short my mental health issues started in 2012 when I tried weed in the university. It's not genetic. I've also been in and out of psychiatric hospitals a good number of times. However I'm currently on medication and I've been able to manage the condition. I was also able to graduate and I've also done my nysc and my family is planning on opening a small business for me since job has not been forthcoming.

However my health condition has been kept secret by me and family and I'm currently dating a nice girl. Please should I tell her my secret. What caused most of my episodes was refusal to take my medication and all that but right now I'm very okay and for some few years now I've been going about my daily affairs without any issue. If I let the cat out of the bag I don't think she may stay cos the stigma of mental health issues is not a joke. Please I need your advice on how to handle this delicate issue. Thanks

Only past issues that have been permanently resolved should be kept secret.

Why do you need to tell her, are you planning on marrying her? If not then don't, reserve such intimate secrets for whoever you plan to marry or have a long term relationship with.

It's only fair for you to tell her so that she can make an informed decision either to stay or not rather than deceiving her to stay.

Also, you need to let her know how these episodes occur. What triggers them, what behaviours you exhibit, how extreme they can be, and how long it lasts.

Gladly you've not had it in a while now so it's manageable. Just don't default on your medication no matter what.

And for those saying that you shouldn't be in a relationship, please don't mind them. We all deserve love and that could be the recipe to fix your troubles.

Some things are better left unsaid. It is not genetic, it was just a mistake on your part, which has no way of affecting your offspring plus you are on medication and you’re certain you won’t relapse then keep it to yourself. All those edging you to talk also have their own skeletons nobody knows about.

omon for u to know u were once kolomental means u are totally healed and completely ok now....but don't tell her yet, weave similar stories about other people and judge her reactions to such stories, give her a lot of reasons to trust and believe you...because most people live with the mindset that once mad always mad...meaning the person can just go berserk any time.....but the best thing for you to do is to accept Jesus fully as your personal Lord and savior, a Bible believing church and soak yourself in the activities of the church this way your healing will be permanent and no fear of it ever re-surfacing again....u know living in sin gives the devil room to torment someone and keep bringing negative pictures of one's past to torment the individual and keep them chained in fear, open your heart to Jesus and be delivered once and for all...cheers
