A seemingly good start for Head Coach Eric Chelle following their two nil win over Rwanda on Friday 21st March, 2025 in their world cup qualifying group stage match. He was praised for a very good start winning his first match in charge of the Super Eagles. Victor Osimhen opened scoring at the 11th minute of the game and completed his double and the only goals to be scored in the match at the 45+3 minutes of the first half. They were cheered despite missing numerous chances in the game. The sixth match of the group stage game was a game a home against the Zimbabwe national team. It was a game that maximum points were required to give the Eagles a hope of progressing and making to the world cup next year. They were leading with a goal to nil till the eighty-ninth minute through a goal scored by Victor Osimhen at the seventy-fourth minute. They lost the lead on the ninetieth minute when the Zimbabwean team equalized through a mistake at the Nigerian defense. The game ended in a one all draw and see the Nigerian team on the edge of crashing out of the next world cup tournament. Eric Chelle and his team were seeing to be visibly frustrated at the end of the match as they had expected more. But it seems that the expectation and the effort did not match at the end of ninety minutes. Nigeria is however down to popular mathematical calculations and permutation on how to reach qualification. This is highly disgraceful for the giant of Africa. With the abundance of talent in the country, one would have expected a smooth qualification. The new man in charge will be praying for miracle now as well as all Nigerians and lovers of the Super Eagles. A sad day it is. https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2025/03/is-eric-chelle-saving-super-eagles.html

The mesmerizing show of skills of some talented sportsmen especially footballers will most certainly convince their fans and the general audience that their out of the sports life is almost perfect. As much as this is what the average spectator will think, this is not really, really the reality for most of them. Going through notable names names that have accomplished certain feats in the football, we will discover that they have a certain 'demon' outside of the pitch that they are trying to curtail and kick behind. In 2019, Daniel Sturridge, A senior team player and striker for Liverpool FC in the English premier league was banned from involvement in football related activities for the club and also fined seventy-five thousand pounds (75,000) after being investigated and found guilty of breaching betting rules. In a similar situation, Brentford player and also a prolific striker, Ivan Toney was charged with a Two hundred and thirty two (232) counts of breaching English FA's soccer betting rules. He itted to gambling addiction and thereafter handed an eight months ban from football related activity. If we are not contending with the foregoing unfortunate news about athletes, we have will be dealing with sexual addiction, promiscuity and bad adventures of sports men such as having, multiple sex partners, secret lovers, rape allegations, hard drugs abuse and reckless behaviour that should not be common place in the life of public figures such as footballers. In 2023, the world was left shook about a revelation that emanated from Hiba Abouk's legal proceedings. It was a court proceeding that should have her half as rich as her estranged husband. Following alleged rape allegations against former PSG star boy, Achraf Hakimi, his wife Hiba filed for divorce at a French a court seeking half of his properties and wealth in what could have been a devastating outcome to the young footballer. But the case was quickly turned around as the court declares that the young footballer has no properties in his names that could possibly be shared as all his wealth accumulations were legally ed to his mother's name and therefore not his. And that was how Hakimi wealth acquisitions remained intact to date. The step in the name of love that many men athletes take have recently been seen as a scary part for them as their partners and love counterparts always see these engagements as a means to an end. If this is not the case, then how come everyone of these so called love partners are filing for divorce from their rich football or athlete husbands and laying claim to half of their monies and properties. And so, one begins to wonder if these love that are being professed are genuine. The latest in this love/marriage hitting rock bottoms is the case of the super manager Pep Guardiola. The manager that have taken the world by storm as one of the best with great tactics and accolades laced with sweet trophies to his name. His side, Manchester City have been seen to be having a very poor run of form since October 2024 to end of same year. It has been revealed that the manager himself have been involved in the latest round of divorce with his wife of thirty years. The partners have been together for the past thirty, 30, years and married for 10 of those years. The wife filed for divorce with claims that the Manchester City manager has neglected his family - his wife and kids. He has been focused mainly with his coaching career and abandoned his fatherly roles. The married currently stands dissolved with Serra having to get half of his totally of his wealth and properties worth roughly around $126 million. That is quit something. This can only happen after a step in the name of love has been initiated. Why can't this step lead to forever? Does it really have to end? https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2025/01/loosing-half-of-your-wealth-as.html

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have just secured the services of former Mali boss Eric Chelle to head it's coaching team. The Super Eagles hhave not been lucky with coaches in recent times as coaches who have come in into the fold have stayed no longer than two years in recent times. A pattern that have worried stakeholders of the team (Nigerians). Jose Peseiro managed the team till the end of their involvement in the continental competition in Ivory Coast. But of course, staying above two years seems to be a bad luck and so he resigned with former player, Finidi George standing in at the interim. Finidi took over on the 29th of April and managed the team to a few games that cumulated in poor results. He had to resign following pressure and backlash he received from the Nigerian people and even some of the key players in the team. He left the job same year and also taking a position at NPFL team, Rivers United. Eric Chelle managed the Mali team since 2022, playing twenty two 22, games. He won 14, draw five (5) and lost three (3). The stats favour him. The team will be hoping that he replicates this success with the Nigeria senior team who have been struggling at qualification for a playing slot at the coming FIFA world cup. https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2025/01/will-eric-chelle-save-super-eagles.html

It was a chilling encounter at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia where the finals of the Spanish super cup competition was held. The competition saw a three match fixture culminate into a frenzy for the Catalan giants on Sunday, 12th January 2025. FC Barcelona coming into this cup competition after a back to back home defeats against the duo of Leganes and Atletico Madrid in the La Liga have always seemed to be the underdog considering the size and caliber of players involved on the Madrid side. Madrid came into the competition with a winning streak advantage of six wins in seven games without a loss. There run of form was only stopped by FC Barcelona at the Super Cup finals. A finals that was hugely anticipated to deliver key events especially Madrid fans who consider their team invincibles. Now, someone has to remind and convince them that this is football and the unimaginable happens at a time when no one expects. The game kicked off at 8pm at the King Abdullah Sports City with the Madrid team opening scoring with Mbappe's clean dribble and nice finish at only the 5th minute with Vinicius Jnr assisting the goal. However, the number 19 shirt wearing man, Lamine Yamal equalized with a subline finish off of Lewandowski's sweet assist at the 22nd minute. Funny thing, was that the Barca team owned the game from the time of the equalizer onwards going on to score other four, 4, additional goals. Two from Raphina, one from Balde and one goal from Robert Lweandoski. At sixtieth minute, Rodrygo made it two for the Real Madrid team but it wasn't enough to cause a comeback or kick an upset despite Barcelona's team reduced to 10 man team following the shot stoppers red card at the fifty sixth minute. Ancelotti, Madrid's coach has revealed he told the players at the break, “At half-time, I told the players let's see if we can START playing football”. Hansi Flick was once asked after the game how he was able to manage Barca winning back to back games against Real Madrid with a nine goals score line. His reply was quite simple; “How did we score 9 goals to Real Madrid in two games? Just FOLLOW THE PLAN”. The Super Cup final between Real Madrid and Barcelona ended five, 5, goals to 2 in favour of Barcelona. https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2025/01/an-upset-at-jeddah-barcelona-thrashes.html

On the 16th of December 2024, many sports lovers especially football fans and enthusiasts gathered at Marrakesh, Morocco to put names on a long standing yearly award ceremony. The ceremony was put together by Confederation of African Football, CAF and was graciously attended by football heavy weights, former and active football players that also included CAF and FIFA presidents, Dr Patrice Motsepe and Gianni Infantino. It was an entertaining event. The highlight of the event was the individuals awards with the most anticipated one, the Best player award deservedly won by Ademola Lookman. The Atalanta Winger/forward has had a stellar performance all through the year. Including his beastly performance at the Europa League finals that saw him creating and breaking records with a hattrick of spectacular goals. I believe everyone knew he was that African who had the most standout performance throughout the year and there was no doubt about it. No disrespect of course to the other nominees who competed in the category with him. I however have a reservation about these awards and why there also seems to be discrepancies in related categories and nominations. The most prominent for me was the Men's Goalkeeper of the year award. It was won by the South African shot stopper Ronwen Williams who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African premier league. Why I was encouraged that a player who plays for a club in Africa could be voted as the best out of Africa, I was disappointed that when the CAF FIFPRO Africa Men's XI was announced, he was not the named keeper. Onana was found inbetween the sticks and it gives me some chills of unsolved puzzles. Why? If Ronwen is the African best goalkeeper, doesn't that make him the one to take the first line in best XI from the region. If the voters in these categories were different as some would have me believe, what data or materials were made available to (the voters) guide them in the voting process. It is just a twist that seem inappropriate to me. In all, the players awarded deserved their wins. The CAF 2024 award winners are listed below; Men's Player of the Year: Ademola Lookman (Atalanta/Nigeria) Women's Player of the Year: Barbra Banda (Orlando Pride/Zambia) Men's Goalkeeper of the Year: Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns/South Africa) Women's Goalkeeper of the Year: Chiamaka Nnadozie (Paris FC/Nigeria) Men's Interclub Player of the Year: Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns/South Africa) Women's Interclub Player of the Year: Sanaa Mssoudy (AS FAR/Morocco) Men's Young Player of the Year: Lamine Camara (AS Monaco/Senegal) Women's Young Player of the Year: Doha El Madani (AS FAR/Morocco) Men's Coach of the Year: Emerse Fae (Cote d’Ivoire) Women's Coach of the Year: Lamia Boumehdi (TP Mazembe) Men's National Team of the Year: Cote d’Ivoire Women's National Team of the Year: Nigeria Men's Club of the Year: Al Ahly (Egypt) Women's Club of the Year: TP Mazembe (DR Congo) Men’s Referee of the Year: Mutaz Ibrahim (Libya) Women’s Referee of the Year: Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco) Men’s Assistant Referee of the Year: Elvis Guy Noupue Nguegoue (Cameroon) Women’s Assistant Referee of the Year: Diana Chikotesha (Zambia) Goal of the Year: Mabululu (Angola) https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2024/12/sportsverifier-caf-awards-2024-ademola.html |

Many people are curious to know why FIFA in all its wisdom is seeking to expand the Club World Cup at a time when there has been agitations from clubs and players alike for a reduced fixtures in the playing calendar. This is to allow players recuperate, have enough time for leisure and family. This call seems not to resonate with the sports world governing body. From all that we as soccer fans have gathered, it was expanded to be an all inclusive competition, becoming more competitive and rewarding for both club and the game in itself. This is a valid reason of course. We are hoping that the club and players are able to manage this situation to not affect the participants, players mainly negatively. As fans and football enthusiasts, we want an unending entertainment as long as those that are meant to entertain us are happy while at it. So the expanded edition has been slated to hold between Sunday 15th June 2025 to 13th July 2025 for twenty nine days. The event promises to be engaging and entertaining with the likes of football world greats and superstars Messi, Neymar and Mbappe making appearance. A total of thirty two teams have been drawn to a group of eight with four teams in each group to play three match group games. The FIFA Club World Cup games draw was done yesterday, 6th December 2024 with Infantino revealing the new look of the tourney's trophy. FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Draw and Grouping is listed below Group A Palmeiras FC Porto Al Ahly Inter Miami Group B Paris St-Germain Atletico Madrid Botafogo Seattle Sounders Group C Bayern Munich Auckland City Boca Juniors Benfica Group D Flamengo Esperance Sportive de Tunisie Chelsea Club Leon Group E River Plate Urawa Red Diamonds Monterrey Inter Milan Group F Fluminense Borussia Dortmund Ulsan Memelodi Sundowns Group H Manchester City Wydad Al Ain Juventus Group H Real Madrid Al Hilal Pachuca Salzburg I will be posting fixtures for the tournament in my subsequent posts where I will be talking about my favourites from each group and my thoughts on possible winners at the tournament. https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2024/12/club-world-cup-draws-and-fifas-2025.html

The Cryptocurrency market has seen a considerable amount of positive growth in the last one month following former American President Donald Trump victory at the November polls returning him to the white house. Following this positive trend, the least of worries for bitcoin traders is not the current surge but stability in the market considering other market forces in the USA and world over when Donald Trump takes office in January. Since the November elections, the cryptocurrency market especially Bitcoin has seen about 33% rise in prices. This has boosted confidence in investors to throw in a 'little bit more' into the market as future growth is expected. For the broader conversation on payments and exchanges using cryptocurrency for individuals and corporations, I will look back to a market research that was done some two years ago. The publication was issued in regards to a number of athletes that agreed with their various employers to have their wages paid in crypto. About seven of them were listed and if they continued to receive their wages via crypto till now is what we don't know. The seven listed athletes are, Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors, Andre Iguodala also of Golden State Warriors, Odell Bekham Jnr of Los Angeles Rams, Shohei Ohtani of Los Angeles Angels, Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay Packers, Cade Cunningham of Detroit Pistons and Trevor Lawrence Jacksonville Jaguars. It is worthy of note that these agreements between players and teams were done in 2021. And in 2022, just a year after, the crypto market saw a sharp decline in most cases of between -9.0% to a whooping -32.0%. But this situation has changed with the present circumstances that has seen Bitcoin on a steady rise. But from recent crypto outlook, there seem to be hope and prospects. The world therefore should look into encouraging investment and wider use of the crypto space. In sports where monetary exchange comes in large sums, the use of crypto will help facilitate and cut burdens of charges on individuals and corporations. I will suggest this method of payment for players in the sporting world. For two reasons, Price growth and Easy accessibility and Use. This is because crypto is now recognised in almost every country of the world with even El Salvador having Bitcoin as a legal tender. Amount deposited in a crypto is automatically seen as an investment and would grow without even any input. The market simply adjusts with time, responding to certain indices. I wish and hope more countries will adopt it as a legal tender with more sportsmen and women also accepting payment with same. https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2024/12/should-sports-athletes-be-paid-in.html

On the heels of a new year comes December. December is a month that premier league stakeholders - players, club managers as well as owners fidgets. It is a month that puts great pressure on players to deliver results in the midst of packed schedule. The premier league clubs and players have over the years complained about these fixtures and the premier league authority seem not to be bothered. Some clubs like Chelsea FC have as many as nine games to execute within the month. Tottenham has nine, Manchester United has eight. Fulham has a reduced match as they are to execute seven matches in December, Liverpool has nine and City have eight fixtures for December. The teams that have appearance at European club competitions have more matches to execute. The issues arising from these compacted match fixtures is the most likelihood of injuries among players. Some clubs already have a long list of injured first team players and are already trying to cover up these absentees with second team players. While some are succeeding with these introductions, others have not been able to maximise the players that are currently serving as replacement for these injured players. So in a month as December, where the title's would-be champion and closest contenders are known is not a period where injuries should be allowed. Any weakness or absentees in the opposing team will always be felt and might even be exploited by other teams. This does not sound fair as these occurrences are not envisioned but could have been curtailed if the Premier league board resolves to spread these games a bit more or in the alternative, the league could be made to start a bit earlier than the normal August ending. The above measures, I believe if implemented could reduce the December match rush and also reduce these incidents of injuries among players that could be detrimental to teams performance. It is 2024 December and what we await is a sweet football entertainment, no injuries. The Premier league table after match day 13 that saw Liverpool thumping over champions Manchester City in a 2 - 0 win over the weekend saw the winning team in a good nine point gap. Arsenal and Chelsea are at second and third positions with twenty five points each. https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2024/12/december-rush-premier-league-dilemma.html

Messi is expected to miss the 125th anniversary celebrating of his former club, FC Barcelona. He left the club in 2021 having won Thirty five (35) trophies and also obtaining six (6) Ballon d'Ors. From his spell at the club's second division to his full career at the main team, Lionel Messi played a total of about Eight hundred (800) matches, scoring a record Six hundred and seventy nine (679) goals and assisting another Three hundred and four (304) more. He had an incredible playing career the club and in 2021 could not renew his contract with the club due to financial constraints on the part of the club and so had to move away to . He a two year deal with the French giants, Paris Saint German (PSG) where he also had an outstanding performance, also wining two more Ballon d'Ors at the club. Lionel Messi have said that he would have loved to end his career at the club he loved FC Barcelona but this was not possible because he has had to make two major moves after his career ended at the Spanish club - He has gone to for PSG and now playing at Inter Miami in the MLS of USA. But he has not stopped been a fan of the city and people of Barcelona nor the club. In his recent interview after news broke out that he might not be in attendance at the club's anniversary because of an already scheduled engagement on the said date. He affirmed his love he and his family has for the city. In his words, ''My kids were born here. I've spent my whole life living there. I feel I belong to Barcelona'' he said at the interview. Continuing, he added, ''My family and I always think about the possibility of returning to live there one day. My children, my wife and I miss our life there a lot. We miss our friends'' He also added that his love for the team has not changed and expressed happiness for the current team's success. ''I see Barcelona. They are doing great and I'm not surprised at all'' He reacted. But his attendance of the club's 29th November celebration is still debated as his presence will mean so much for the club and to him. Stakeholders are hoping that a last minute change could put events in a favourable condition for his attendance. We will keep fingers crossed as we observe further developments. https://www.sportsverifier.com.ng/2024/11/messi-is-missing-125th-anniversary-of.html

In Manchester, the two teams in the top flight of the English league, Manchester United and Manchester City have had enough stories to serve us a great deal. Manchester City has been on the positive receiving note for the past ten years. They are the only team with seven league titles to their name in the past ten years. Their shelves have not been empty totally in other competitions locally and even at the bigger European scene as they have also won Two English FA cups, Six league cups and One FA Community Shields within the period. They have also won One UEFA Champions league title, One UEFA Super Cup and One FIFA Club World Cup title with the ten year period. The Citizens have been a successful team in every regards. This they boost of with the help of a super talented Head Coach Pep Guardiola. And on the other side is the Red devils, who in the past ten years have won two English FA cups, two FA Community Shields and UEFA Europa league title. The Manchester United decline began almost immediately after Sir Alex Ferguson stepped aside from his managerial role after a twenty seven reign. He won them major titles during his long stay at the club and serving a fulfilling career ending 2013 with David Moyes taking over the affairs of the team. The decline began to bring ridicule to the trail blazing team who have in time past dominated and even ''oppressed'' other teams in the league and even at the European scene. It led to several managerial changes at the club with the latest being the sacking of Eric Ten Hag as head coach in October 2024 after a winless run in both domestic and at the Europa league scene. Ruud Van Nistelrooy took over the managerial affairs in the interim managing a two game win and a draw in three games since take over. While Ruben Amorim has been named to take charge of the club after the international break. Ruben is the head coach of Sporting Lisbon, Portugal and he has had incredible run while at the club and the team is hoping that he will once again rekindle the Red devil spirit in the club. Recently, Manchester City have also come under a bad run in the league and the Champions league. The City team under Pep have seen back to back defeat for the first time in a long while since Pep's take over. They have lost four games in a roll. Two premier league games, one EFL cup and one Champions league game. Enduring defeat from Bournemouth and Sporting in the space of a week is something that has not been heard of at the club in a very long time. The question every one is asking at this time is, has the big picture of this super Manchester clubs been tainted? what exactly is this decline that we are witnessing. Like Craig David and Sting sang in their song titled, Rise and fall. They opined that once your picture becomes tainted, it is what they call, the rise and fall. Is this what we are witnessing. If the pictures of the two clubs are tainted, what is this stain? Of course, we are not oblivious of the stories and somewhat conspiracy theories that abound in the media about the two clubs. The Manchester United team under Sir Alex was alleged to be a corrupt team that was dictating and influences match officials to win matches. Of course no truth has been established in this regard. While the City team has been said to be a finance influencing team because of the heavy sums that the club have spent to acquire some names within their ranks. They are also been investigated by the FA for allegation that they breached the FINANCIAL FAIR PLAY rules in the league and are rumoured to even be demoted to the lower leagues if found guilty. Are some of these stories true? We don't know yet and might never know as some of these findings are never made public. We hope they bounce back and give football lovers and their fans a better and entertaining football match.
