Those this applies to any kind of modem?

Yes it apply to any kind of dialup modems.

Except if you are Nigerian resident in Nigeria, please check my previous posting under "NOTICE FOR NIGERIAN RESIDENTS IN NIGERIA ONLY" bold on "HOWTO: install and configure your dialup modem on Ubuntu" above.

Thank you very much!

The link you gave was refering to Linmodems which are not really in use in Nigeria any longer. Most people use Usb modems, CDMA modems and PCMIA so using scan modem really isn't neccessary since wvdial can detect these class of modem with ease.

Hmmm let me guess you're most likely using Reltel, Starcomms, Glo, Mtn or Celtel. Okay when asking questions try giving more details. I also use dialup. There's an article on http://ubuntunigeria./2007/09/10/dial-up-internet-on-linux/ covering Dialup connection on ubuntu.

Thank you for let me know for Nigerian dialup modem configuration! Let me go back modify my posting recently.

Since I am not dialup modem , I use wireless network connection that Ubuntu automatically set up itself when it comes to install Ubuntu CD for the first time.

Later after update manager to update all repostories, my hostname was lost, i re-configure my hostname using /etc/hosts.

You're doing a wonderful job here. This article would soon be featured on the Ubuntu Nigeria Bolg. Also am writing a new article on of our team, would you like to ?

Also some of your apps might not appear on the list and yet still work with wine. Then you can post it on the wine Database.
At times it might just be a missing Dll thats preventing you app from working with wine. So incase your app doesn't work just drag it to the Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) ,put 'wine' before it and see the error message
eg wine /home/wale/ludo.exe
The error messsage gives you a clue on what to do. Just google it out.

@adewaleafolabi

Do you mean http://ubuntunigeria., Ubuntu Nigeria blog? No thank for ing the blog.

What is ludo.exe? Give me the name of application for Wine apps that i can google it.

How Do I know if Windows applications work running on Linux OS like Ubuntu?

If you are wondering how well a particular application works in Wine, please examine the following link here: Wine Applications Database

Look at Top 10 Platinum list, Gold list, and Silver list at this site scrolling down.

If you cannot find any applications listing, then use on the left-hand column to click "Browse Apps" to select "Category" drop-down menu and "License" drop-down menu at your choice, then hit the button "Update filter" to find your favorite Windows application.

There are 10,679 applications currently in the database you can find Windows applications running on Linux OS.

Terminal Command Error: SUDO unable to resolve host

After you use Ubuntu recovery or upgrade, you get strange error at below:

Every time you use sudo from Terminal says
name@    :~$ sudo
"sudo: unable to resolve host name"

Even though it runs working fine.

That mean you have a missing hostname, what would you do?

Check what Terminal say at following code below:

cat /etc/hosts

1) If you get blank information shown on  '/etc/hosts', then you need on your authorization to edit on the Terminal as follow exactly at below: (use your network name replacing ''name-desktop') or the other way to use GUI network setting instruction if you are not comfortable using Terminal command.

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

***if you do not know what your network name is, code here:

sudo /etc/hostname

2) Once text editor of '/etc/hosts prompts opening new window, type up followed code below:

#The following lines are desirable for IP addresses include web host servernames.
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 name-desktop

#The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

3.) save text editor and close. Run Terminal you will see like this below:

name@name-desktop:~$

Other way: using GUI network setting instruction below:

1. System > istration > Network
2. Click on "unlock"
3. Enter and click on "authenticate"
4. Click on Hosts Tab
5. Select your host alias and click properties
6. Edit alias by removing the addition of the domain
7. click ok and close

Can Windows applications run on Linux OS?

Yes, you need to install WINE emulator and/or CROSSOVER OFFICE emulator to Ubuntu OS obtaining Windows-based programs you use such as Microsoft Office 2007, Autocad, etc. I will give you instruction how to install WINE/CROSSOVER OFFICE on Ubuntu thread, not here. **CROSSOVER OFFICE is not a free, commerical software.

Former Xandros Linux OS in 6 years ago, i used WINE/CROSSOVER OFFICE emulator obtaining my Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, Photoshop 7, Office XP, IE 6, it works BEAUTIFULLY. I always rely on checking WINE site for the latest update patches waiting for newer version of Flash/Dreamweaver/Office/IE to be resolved.

For 6 years, WINE and CROSSOVER OFFICE always announce the following Windows-based applications which is succeeded and which is failed by its symbol color: silver, gold, bronze and "X".

Only Ubuntu OS has succeeded that Windows-based applications i checked on WINE/CROSSOVER OFFICE periodically while all other Linux OS failed. That means Ubuntu is STABLE OS.

Only Ubuntu OS has 100% fully on wireless network while all other linux OS failed. I rely on linux distro watch listening what linux s complaint the latest bug releases news starting last weekend after installed Ubuntu 8.04 for the first time. There are lot of bugs release i read and it also ANNOUNCES telling either [SOLVED] or [SUCCESS] that way it has built-in update manager to update all repositories to remove, add, or upgrade so quickly unlikely Windows OS that take times to resolve long time by adding "SERVICE PACK" that annoys me.

=======
All Linux OS can work on older computer machine by use minimal optimization which Windows Vista refused accepting any older computer machine that force people to buy newer computer systems (or newer part replacements:ram memory card, u processor)---THAT WASTE THEIR MONEY!!!!

HOWTO: get Frostwire to work for Hardy Heron

This post is used to install the version of frostwire from frostwire's server, instead of using the Ubuntu version package.

This tutorial installs java6 in your system. You must use Java to have this work.  IceTea Java from Ubuntu version does not work for me at all.

UBUNTU x86 s:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre
wget http://iacchus.frostwire.com/frostwire/4.13.5/frostwire-4.13.5.i586.deb
sudo dpkg -i frostwire-4.13.5.i586.deb
sudo update-alternatives --config java

UBUNTU x86_64 s:

sudo apt-get install ia32-sun-java6-jre
wget http://iacchus.frostwire.com/frostwire/4.13.5/frostwire-4.13.5.i586.deb
sudo dpkg -i frostwire-4.13.5.i586.deb
sudo update-alternatives --config java

That should fix your issues. Be patient waiting Frostwire loading asking you to instruction, then there you go.

Slowest internet connection using Firefox 3 and Ubuntu

Speed up Firefox 3 on Ubuntu: [WARNING: designed for broadband only, dialup not work]

Maybe you have wrong DNS servers on Ubuntu Network setting that causes network connection very slow. Go Network setting that is found at System > istration > Networking > DNS, then insert your own ISP's DNS SERVERS there. Hit 'ok'. If not solve it, then next step here:

1. Open Firefox 3, go Application > Internet > Firefox or use Firefox icon on menubar.

2. Enter the blank address bar: about:config

3. Enter the text field of Filter: (one a time type at below, then double-click to change on '=> bold' -it automatically double-click 'true' change itself)
[li]network.dns.disableIPv6 => true[/li]
[li]network.http.pipelining => true [/li]
[li]network.http.pipelining.maxrequests => 8 [/li]
[li]network.http.proxy.pipelining => true[/li]
[li]network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy => 8 [/li]
[li]network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server => 8 [/li]
4. restart (close) Firefox 3

5. Wait few minutes, then open Firefox 3, there you go surfing faster much better.

Unfortunately I lost the link where I found on google. It works on my son's Ubuntu system loading Firefox 3 surfing on the internet much better. No more hang too long connection.  cheesy

Good luck!

You still argue about Windows Vista against Linux you saying that Linux do not have those appearance, bootscreen and icon replacement---that when I come in showing you a proof that YOU ARE WRONG about linux. Ubuntu has all those things you not even bother to google them to tweak those things you need.

Do not believe what Anti-linux people wrote on sites because they not even try install Linux themselves---not bother to look up linux forum as well as wiki forum to tweak linux performance!

I used to be Anti-Windows like you at that time it was Windows 3.1 that I refused to Windows 95, later i learned that i was wrong!!!

20 years later, i was sick and tired of all Windows OS upgrade and too many flaws/glitches Microsoft has not change lately. I accustomed for too long!!!! Time for me to switch to Linux---Ubuntu!

between i didnt know u use ubuntu , damn! am impressed ,

@bigrovar

Yes I use Ubuntu 8.04 just installed on my son's 10 years old desktop pc that my mother gave away. I upgraded myself replacing new motherboard/u/power supply and new monitor with old Windows 98 then decided to do my experimental installing new Ubuntu OS wiping off entire Windows 98 during recent weekend for the first time.

Changing windows replacing Ubuntu icon into Transformer that is my son's favorite desktop screen including screen, changing appearance too.

I keep eyes on your experience using Ubuntu as well as your blog that I am impressed with here on NL everyday. It helps me to decide to install my main host pc that has Windows XP professional long before year 2014 to discontinue Windows XP .

No problem easy like breezy to run Ubuntu and tweaking everything when it comes to fail FireFox 3 loading even though networking connection still is on fine. That's how I solved it quickly less than 2 hours---no problem!!!

I was veteran Xandros Linux OS 6 years ago, too busy to change everything right after the technician messed up my Xandros-based pc lost everything. At that time Xandros does not have GRUB booting, different kind of booting at FIRST RELEASE (Xandros 1.0). Luckily I have backup CDs before giving technician to look up my pc. I did not have time for re-install them because i was tied up working on website projects on my main pc. I have two pcs at that time.

Look for Windows Vista-ed software games to buy, i mean the icon or seal of "Windows Vista-ed" you should know that will work on most Vista-based computer system.

Or something Windows XP-based plug-n-play detection plugins add-on accepting the icon/seal of "Windows XP-ed" software games to be enabled working on all Vista-based computer system.

I dunno if Vista has that plugins add-on allowing any Windows XP software games installed on Vista-based computer system.

By the way, I am not use Windows Vista, I still stick with Windows XP professional while experimenting using Ubuntu Linux on 2nd computer before decide to install on my host desktop computer as dual-booting later.

MyPeace:

Please what is Vista? l was asked if l can use it in one of the interviews l attended. Whats is the relevance of it to my position as a Personal Assistant? Please respond. Thx.

MyPeace

What is Windows Vista?

Windows Vista (pronounced /ˈvɪstə/) is a line of operating systems developed by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, Tablet PCs, and media center PCs. Prior to its announcement on July 22, 2005, Windows Vista was known by its codename Longhorn.[1] Development was completed on November 8, 2006; over the following three months it was released in stages to computer hardware and software manufacturers, business customers, and retail channels.

Discontinued old Microsoft operating systems are: Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 2000 (at end year 2010,  Windows XP soon discontinued).

For more detail: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista

For you, Mypeace:

Without Windows Vista or any operating system (Linux, Mac or Windows), your computer will not load anything but BLACK SCREEN WITH FLASHING CURSOR, just like you insert blank videotape into your VCR to play---NOTHING COMES OUT on your TV.  You as Personal Assistant, cannot do anything accessing your computer you need performing your tasks there.

Reference this to your position as personal assistant is to able to access computer system using word processing, calendar, project management, email, fax, everything office productivity electronically and dynamically---PAPER FREE in order to assist busy CEO/THE PRESIDENT OF COMPANY/BUSINESS MAN/WOMAN walking around, answering phone, running errands for him/her.

Good luck on interview but there is more than one question: What is Windows Vista?

Because the interviewers need to know your computer proficient, skills, and your familiar as Personal Assistant procedures as well as your education and working experience background to be screened whether should you be qualified or not.

Tell us what is personal assistant? Google using wiki you will find the detail description of the personal assistant.

Go getting a rented movie to get the idea what Fashion Personal Assistant (movie) is all about: "Devil Wears Prada", DVD, ProPortrayed Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway.

EVERY BIG COMPANY, not only fashion industry, mostly Financial, Stock Market, Banking, any business do have their own personal assistants for boss as full-time jobs. Just more than being secretary duty on the desk near boss' office.

Good luck!!!

It will not work on dialup on Firefox 3/Ubuntu for networking configuration. It has different dialup setting using pppo on Ubuntu. I have no idea about dialup configuration/setting procedure for Firefox 3 on Ubuntu because I am broadband .
