Yesterday, 56-year-old mother of four, Oluwayemisi Owolabi, was sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, over cocaine trafficking.
Justice Rilwan Aikawa convicted and sentenced Owolabi after she pleaded guilty to one-count charge of drug trafficking preferred against her by the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
While urging the court to convict and sentence Owolabi, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Abu, reviewed the fact of the case, tendered the convict’s harmonised Ecowas port, an e-ticket and boarding as evidence. Other evidence tendered before the court include three written statements of the convict, two request of scientific aid form, a drug analysing report, two evidence pouches, two transparent pouches containing the drug, two scientific report of the drug, and a sealed brown envelope, which were itted as exhibits.
The convict’s lawyer, Morenike Ogunleye, pleaded: “The convict is a first time offender, and she is sober. She is a mother of four children, who is single-handedly taking care of them, as she has separated from her husband.” The judge asked the prosecutor, Ibrahim, for the punishment for the crime committed as stipulated by the NDLEA Act, and the prosecutor said it is life imprisonment.
Justice Aikawa ruled: “I have listened to the plea made on her behalf by the counsel, and also listened to the prosecutor that she has no record of crime. I have to consider both her plea and what the law says about the crime. “Consequently, I hereby sentence her to 10 years imprisonment, starting from the day of her arrest,” which was in May 19 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, during outward clearance of Qatar Airways flight to Saudi Arabia, with 330 grammes of cocaine.

Malam Musa Mohammed, a 43-year-old man has been arrested by the Rights Protection Agency in Niger State for setting his 15-year-old son, Bello Musa, ablaze.
Mrs Mairam Kolo, the Director-General of the agency confirmed the incident saying it occurred around Polytechnic Road, Bida, in Bida Local Government Area of the state.
She explained that Musa tied the victim up and siphoned petrol from his motorcycle, poured it on the victim and set him on fire because of his alleged frequent quarrels with his elder brother.
According to her, the quick intervention of neighbours helped save the victim from being burnt to death. She said the victim is receiving treatment at Umaru Ndayako General Hospital, Bida. Earlier, the father begged for mercy, saying he committed the offence out of anger.

On Monday night, The White House transformed from a grandiose building into a haunted spectacle to celebrate Halloween.
President Trump posed with a kid in skeleton costume and a MAGA hat, while his wife Melania Trump was all smiles with the kids that came through for the bash.
About 6,000 children and adults were invited for trick-or-treating at the White House on Halloween eve. Children from more than 20 schools in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia attended the festivities on the South Lawn, along with military families and of unspecified community organisations.

Police officer who abducted a raped a 14 year old girl in Anambra has been arrested, to be arraigned in court soon

The Anambra state police command says it has arrested police officer, Bara'u Garba, who abducted and raped a 14-year-old girl, Maryam, in Anambra state.
A statement released by the Delta state command says the erring police officer would soon be charged to court. Read the statement below
'The Police Command wishes to confirm the arrest of F/No 275601 L Bara'u Garba attached to 7PMF Sokoto but deployed to Anambra State on special duty for the alleged abduction and defilement of a 14yrs old girl of Hausa Quarters in Asaba Delta State.
The erring policeman was arrested, defaulted and detained accordingly; and is facing Police internal disciplinary procedures. He will be arraigned before the appropriate Court of the land as soon as the criminal investigation against him is concluded.
This is indeed an isolated case and does not reflect the core values and ethics of the Nigeria Police Force. Justice will not only be done but seen to have been done.

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has called on the military to direct its “operations Python Dance and Crocodile Smile” to those areas in Nigeria, especially the North Central States of Benue, Plateau as well as North East States like Taraba and Adamawa where Fulani herdsmen are killings Nigerians and destroying farmlands worth several billions of naira.
The governor, who described the reported threat by Miyeitti Allah Kautal Hore, a splinter group of Miyeitti Allah Cattle Breeders Association; over the Benue State Anti-Open Grazing Law as reckless and open threat against the sovereignty of Nigeria, added that the silence of the President Muhammadu Buhari led government over the Fulani herdsmen menace was a sign of complicity on the part of the federal government.
In a statement in Ado Ekiti on Monday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said;
“If the Federal Government does not want to be seen as protecting the Fulani herdsmen, attention of the Army’s python that is dancing in the Southeast and crocodile that is smiling in the Southwest and South South should be focused on the killer herdsmen.”
He said the alarm raised by Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom over an alleged plan by Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore to launch fresh attacks on Benue State, should worry lover of peace in Nigeria, adding that;
“The moment a state governor begins to raise alarm as done by Governor Ortom, those playing ostrich to the Fulani herdsmen menace should know that they can no longer pretend that all is well.”
Accusing the federal government of always looking the other way
whenever Fulani herdsmen attack and kill Nigerians, Governor Fayose said;
“On June 17, 2007, when clash between herdsmen and local farmers in the Mambila area of Taraba State resulted in casualty from both sides – herdsmen and local farmers, soldiers were promptly deployed.
“However, the same federal government that responded swiftly when local farmers in Taraba State confronted the Fulani herdsmen, leading to casualties from both sides; never responded in such a swift manner to previous attacks carried out by the Fulani, even when villages of the locals in the state were sacked.
“Within just 48 hours of the clash between the Fulani herdsmen and the local farmers in Mambila Plateau, the Taraba state police commissioner moved in, army battalions moved in and a military surveillance helicopter was dispatched. This did not happen when herdsmen were committing genocide against the villagers in Agatu in Benue State, Southern Kaduna, Kogi, Ekiti, and Delta States.
“Are we now to believe that it is only when Nigerians choose to defend themselves against the killer herdsmen that the federal government will act swiftly?
“Like I have maintained, pastoralists do not have rights to destroy other people’s farmlands, invade homes and rape people’s wives and daughters? Rather, people who are into cattle farming should be able to provide feeds for their animals and the federal government must not be seen as protecting the interests of the herdsmen against those of other Nigerians”

Claude Puel is to take charge at Leicester
Claude Puel has been named the new manager of Leicester and the former Southampton boss has agreed a contract which runs until June 2020.
The 2015/16 Premier League champions have moved quickly to replace Craig Shakespeare, who was fired last week after a 1-1 draw with West Brom continued Leicester's faltering start to the season.
The Foxes have subsequently been guided to a League win over Swansea and a Carabao Cup victory over Leeds by caretaker boss Michael Appleton, who will continue in his role as assistant manager.
He will work under the experienced Frenchman Puel, who has previously managed Lyon and Monaco, and steered Southampton to an eighth-place finish and an EFL Cup final last term, before he was dismissed at the end of the season.
Puel said: "It's a great privilege to become the new manager of Leicester City - a club whose values and ambitions are closely aligned to my own.
"The opportunity to help the club build on its remarkable recent achievements is a truly exciting one and I'm looking forward to working with the owners, players, staff and ers to deliver further lasting success."
