150 Years From Now 150 years from now, none of us reading this post today will be alive. 70 percent to 100 percent of everything we are fighting over right now will be totally forgotten. Underline the word, TOTALLY. If we go back memory lane to 150 years before us, that will be 1872, none of those that carried the world on their heads then are alive today. Almost all of us reading this will find it difficult to picture anybody's face of that era. Pause for a while and imagine how some of them betrayed their relatives and sold them as slaves for a piece of mirror. Some killed family just for a piece of land or tubers of yam or cowries or for a pinch of salt. Where is the yam, cowries, mirror, or salt that they were using to brag? It may sound funny to us now, but that is how silly we humans are sometimes, especially when it comes to power or trying to be relevant. I those days in my secondary school, how some people fought and did so many unimaginable things just to have their names shortlisted among those to be made school Prefects. Ordinary school Prefects o! It is just about 18 years since I left secondary school, nobody in that school right now re that I even schooled there despite my popularity then. Now, imagine what happens after 150 years? Even when you claim the internet age will preserve your memory, take Michael Jackson as an example. Michael Jackson died in 2009, that was just 13 years ago. Imagine the influence Michael Jackson had all over the world when he was alive. Gosh, he was like a god. How many young people of today him with awe, that is if they even know him? In 150 years to come, his name, when mentioned, will not ring any bell to a lot of people. This is even because he was popular, imagine the majority of people who will never be known worldwide like him? Let us take life easy, nobody will get out of this world alive. . . The land you are fighting and ready to kill for, somebody left that land, the person is dead, rotten, and forgotten. That will also be your fate. In 150 years to come, none of the vehicles or phones we are using today to brag will be relevant. Biko, take life easy! Let love lead. Be genuinely happy for each other. No malice, no backbiting. No jealousy. No comparison. It is not a competition. At the end of the day, we all have the same destiny in the grave. It is just a question of who gets there first, but surely we will all go there. Owo! Akingbemila Folarin Owo Like a bird perching for a branch Our heart goes to you We are victims too as our heart is broken Pain that makes one numb And tears that drowns one. A hurt that cuts deeper Than a knife to the back And a sting that quakes the mouth Like one caught in a frozen lake. Non should go by this path It ing hell in the only place Where one finds peace How can we say, ‘find peace’ When peace was shredded With Dynamite and bullets! Those hellions take line As the most degraded of souls Thrown out of the sewage of hell Demons in form of men Spewed out of a putrid hell of a den Men whose souls are filthier than mud Who are thirstier for blood Than the desert does for water More lifeless than a stone And less alive than a rot Liquid will turn sand on their tongues Food will turn dust in their mouth Air will be toxin to them And life will shred them and feed them their flesh Justice shall chase them swiftly Songo will strike them from the sky Ogun will crush them on land Osun will drown them in the waters Till their life fades away like smoke… Owo Like a bird perching for a branch Our heart goes to you

A Quick Review Heavily inspired by the works of Wole Soyinka and Niyi Osundare, Folarin Akingbemila has rolled out his debut literary work ‘When Shadows Have Colours’. This is an anthology of poems that has given the poet a seat in the hall of Modern Day Poets in Nigeria and Africa at large. Every aspect of life has been captured in over 100 intriguing titles. Based on a general thematic preoccupation, Folarin Akingbemila has divided the book into seven sections, which he termed ‘Parts’. The sections have been titled as follows: A Country Held Hostage A Drop of Reason in an Ocean of Emotion The Ember in Ashe A Student of Life To a Dying World Sonnets Dog Eat Dog In a bid to quell the wide-ranging conviction that poems can be relished only by a selected few, the poet, has collected words in a fashion that will speak to everyone who comes across the collection. In his words, “Various types of poetry have been captured under headings. These types include lyric, narrative, epistolary, ode, haiku, sonnet, elegy etc. This has been deliberate for different folks to have different strokes. While some poems have been deliberately made complex to capture the depth of where thought emanates, others can be enjoyed from the literal purview.” In a simple and interesting way, the poet has been able to weave metaphor and irony into a fabric of narratives that totally leaves the readers in awe. Poetry has been engraved on a coin. One part appears complex and the other, simple. As a matter of fact, there’s also a take home for those who would stand on the edge. Plans are in gear to launch the work in various states and across colleges and universities. Folarin Akingbemila is also open to discussions organised by various reading clubs. This affords readers the opportunity to get on a first hand bases, the inspiration behind various poems. ‘When Shadows Have Colours’ is destined for the top shelve and the spotlight. It comes highly recommended for everyone who craves for knowledge and intrigue. 1 Like |
