MummyJaygirls:
So yesterday I say I wan buy small supplies for house, oga say “don’t go, it’s too cold after we the car, we would go together on Thursday”, me I say I want to go, why are u trying to dull me na? na so I wear cloth enter -29 weather.

I Dey hail mysef Say ahnn ahnn, this my baffing up is ok o, I’m not cold. Na so I waka reach the bus stop near the house,

Then I realized say the area get plenty bus stops and I was at the wrong one, I wasn’t sure which one I was to wait at, I brought out my phone to use the map and the battery just drained, even the phone know say the cold na gangster.

After trekking from one end of the street to the other, I decided to wait at the one that looked more like a busy road to me. My nose felt frozen, poor me cry

When I look time, it was past the time I saw online that the bus would arrive, and the next was for 30mins later, jisox, so I go sidon wait outside? E mean say na ice mummyjaygirls dem go come carry o, then I thought of how my oga go tell me say shebi I said don’t go, so I followed the stubborn part of my brain and decided to sit and wait for the bus.

After small time (20mins) I decided to walk to another bus stop, I never waka far when I saw the bus on the other side of the road dropping off engers, so I turned back to wait again. Like 10 minutes later, the bus arrived. Yippie!

I hopped one, sat at the back to the final stop. The initial plan was to use Uber to the store, but when I got there the “devil” in me say why don’t u just complete the journey with the bus na? Na im I ask bus driver say I Dey go .... he say enter that one, so I entered and told the driver say, see where I Dey go o, he say ok, sit down, we dey go dey go, I no Dey gree reach my destination, next thing I saw was the bus station, Chineke! This guy don do me one chance, so I told him say bros, where the place where u suppose drop me na, he say “sorry, I didn’t see it” hian! Thunder fire u, hiss.

So he says where exactly is the place, i say ...., o get on that bus, so I did again, this time I turned on google map and it showed the place was around the area, but as per no be molue and u can’t stop anyhow, I had to wait till the next bus stop.

By this time, I don already tire, I say make I use Uber as e no far from where I stop, so e no go too cost, my village people say “ur suffer never reach us” Uber no gree work, e say ur number isn’t ed, blood of Zachariah! Bet y meeee! As I Dey think how I go do, yellow cab just ed in front of me, see as I copy the number sharp sharp, called them (while praying the phone wouldn’t die on me) and in a few minutes my taxi arrived, the rest they say is history.

When I reach house na so I face heater for my body while drinking hot milo and slept off on that spot. Lol

So that’s my first over sabi experience in Canada o.

Hehehhe nice experience ma, well in case you want to use transit next time, check online e.g edmontontransit or Calgarytransit you will see the stops and like 4 or 5 digits on where to stop and if you get to the bustop you will see that same number written on it. In Marlborough NE calgary they have 2 bus 23 each on the opposite side of the road,I went to the final station in saddletown while heading to work trust me it wasn't funny

Welcome to canny

@Timesup234 and co,this analysis below settles the argument.

The problem with Nigeria is our mentality. An average Nigerian is all about money, money, houses, SUV etc and this is why this question is always coming up. Because of our greed and our ability to acquire, acquire and acquire, our society have been built on storing money, properties. It is not surprising to see Nigerians in Nigeria with fat bank , many houses with high fence and big gate, high SUV yet the street they live is littered with bad roads and full of generator noise because that is what we care about.

The western world is different because they are not built for people to store money. Their system is designed for money to circulate. This is why even services we pay peanuts for here is Nigeria is costly abroad. Everyone is given the opportunity to live a base life and if you want to be rich you can use your brain and do something extraordinary. For example, a barber, cleaner, nanny etc in the western world has the opportunity to live a normal life. He can save a little money, make a little down payment and buy a house or car on mortgage despite being just a barber. He gets to enjoy his tokunbo car and 2 bedroom apartment even though he is paying for it in the next 10 years. Even if he dies today before he finish paying, he cannot say that he didn’t enjoy the basic things of life. Enjoying the basic things of life is not left for the rich alone.
In Nigeria, some people can never enjoy the basic things of life forever. For example, a cleaner, nanny etc can never buy a car because Nigeria is designed for the rich to exploit the poor and there is no buffer to help the poor.

A top bank manager earning more than 1 million naira a month cannot bring out just 50k from his millions to pay a Nanny or gateman. Instead he will go and bring one Ekaite from the village whom he will exploit as slave. Ekaite will do all the jobs in the house and will not even go to school for the first 3 years. After 3 years, they will now send her to a local school where children sit on the floor even though their own children are going to posh schools. During Christmas, they give Ekaite’s family a bag of rice and 20k and the family is happy due to poverty. But this same man store millions of naira in his and building lots of houses yet his aboki gateman is just paid 10k a month because he does not deserve any good life afterall he is a common gateman. In the western world, the bank manager will have over 60% of his earnings go into the payment of other services. That means he will pay the Nanny, guards, gardeners, cleaners, barber etc that works for him an hourly minimum wage. So he has little money to save and build mansions here and there but the good thing is that the people in the lower cadre live a normal life off him and the money circulates.

The Nigerian society is built for exploitation unlike the western world. The greatest disservice to poor man in Nigeria is that they are not paid hourly. The rich man/organizations takes all their time and pay them pea nut at the end of the month but a poor man aboard can work 24 hours and be paid for those 24 hours if he has the strength.

So before you travel, you need to understand how the western society works and what exactly you want. If your aim is to make millions and become rich, build houses here and there, the western society is not for you, you can become rich easier in Nigeria. It is only in Nigeria, you can become rich overnight.
You can go to china, import some substandard goods into the country, bribe SON and customs and sell your goods and make mega millions in a jiffy and build your mansions here and there. If you run a business, you can avoid paying taxes, just tip the FIRS and they would look the other way and you take those taxes you should have paid and build mansions for yourself, you are rich! The FIRS,Custom, SON guys make mega money and build their own mansions, you make your own mega money too, the ordinary people and the government are shortchanged but the govt is not bothered because they loot their own from crude oil directly. In fact, Nigeria is a goldmine if you have the mind and can throw away your conscience. Dem no born you well to not pay your taxes in the western world or do anyhow in the western world. Hiring a nanny alone could wipe off your savings monthly abroad.

If you work in many organizations, you may not have to touch your salary because you will be getting illegal cash every day. For example, if you work in immigration, you will be getting 3k, 4k from people who want to get their port else they may have to wait for one year to get it. If you work in universities, you will be getting extra 3k, 4k, 2k from people who wants their transcripts else they will look for your results for the next one year and so many examples. If you add up this monies, you can see that you are getting more than your salary from your little office. This is how Nigeria works, No wonder these civil servants you see have a lot of money. This is what you can never get abroad.

So you can see that it is easy to make it in Nigeria but it comes at a cost. A country where nothing works. No light, no water, bad roads, bad schools, hospitals, insecurity etc. There is no fine house in Nigeria that does not have a high fence and a big gate. In the western world, you would hardly see a fenced house because the police is 2 minutes away from your phone call.

So our mentality is different from the western world. While the western world cares more about the larger society, we care about our individual self and individual wealth and this is why we are richer individually than them but they are richer and better collectively as a society than us. The question you should ask before you travel is what you value more as an individual.

I hardly comment on nairaland despite the fact that I visit this site nothing less than 10x a day and I come just to get information, but bruv your write is explicit and very detailed .I guess you have ended this funny argument, comparing a bank manager with over 15years work experience and a hustler in the US is just like comparing Barcelona and Kano pillars with regards to trophies.Nice write up bruv

There was fundraising @ our work place yesterday for the family of Nicolas and it TURNED out very well.
The refreshment was served by the team lead in all department and I saw the Vice President from Toronto serving drinks.
They sold raffle tickets for so many items to raise funds,Heard unofficially that the wake keep is on 21st of July, and burial next day.
If you wish to contribute to the family ,type his name on Facebook and make your cheerful donations as a GOFUNDME has been set up for him.

is this kind of attack rampant over there

It is actually very strange to me and most people cos most native here beg for spare change but they are not actually violent.I personally think that the culprit was under influence of hard drugs cos he did the harm on one side of the train station and ran over to enter train going the opposite direction,If actually it was drug related or planned he would have use a bike or personal car to escape.

[quote author=Pidgin2 post=57239837]Timhortons, I'm sorry you lost a friend in such an unfortunate circumstance. However, you went a tad bit too far in the post where you mentioned me. The name calling is uncalled for but I'll because I understand you are grieving, I also sympathize with you and his family especially his wife and kids

To all other folks who called me ridiculous names, this is not the thread where scores are settled. I'll all the silly insults for the memory of my fellow Nigerian citizen who lost his life on Canadian soil.

Sorry if I actually hurt you with my words as I was really pained just ing the looks on the face of his kids especially the 3months old baby and looking @ my lil girl,so many unanswered thoughts fly through my head in a second.I take back all my offensive words to you as I meant no harm.Peace dear.

I have never been this scared for a very long time not even when I lost my Dad.we both studied geology in Nigeria, migrated the same year to Canada, our wives did health care in bow valley college,we applied for power engineering program @ CCIS together and I was chosen,we both have our first child as girls,we work in the same organisation(we even played table tennis on Wednesday prior to his death) he was stabbed two minutes from my house, the train station I use EVERY blessed day.when we visited the wife yesterday she said she saw the news about a man stabbed on city hall not even knowing it was her husband he didn't come back till 12am and she heard a knock on her door and was so happy not knowing it was the cops that came to inform her.

Pidgin2 or parrot 2 I have been reading your negative comments on nairaland about people that want to migrate and I have never for once responded or attacked you and right now you just copied maternal and wellendowed .I totally understand where you are driving @ but I will be ready for you later,I can deductively conclude that you are a low lifer and you are very very irritating,I sincerely pity a man that will marry you cos he wud have preferred Jezebel for a wife. After, my grieving we will see each other more.

Please my fellow Nairalanders, advice me accordingly.

I am a Batch A Corp member ing out soon. All these while I've been applying for jobs I saw here and on other platforms but my efforts have not yielded much fruits though I'm still hopeful.
However, I have two options I'm currently considering. One is that my PPA (a private secondary school) is willing to retain me for #22k per month with accommodation and secondly I have a job offer with an Indian company to work as a quality control officer for #25k/month.
Now my confusion is that though the Indian company is in my field but their working conditions are terrible. It entails that I work 7am-6pm, Monday -Saturday and live within the factory premises which means no visitors or free movement. But the school offers me time (I'll work 7:30am-3pm, Mon-Fri, free weekend midterm break and holiday) and freedom in case I want to improve myself in other areas.
Now should I choose the Indian company for the sake of experience or the school for the sake of time and freedom it offers?
Finally I studied food science and technology with additional qualifications in Project Management and HSE. I'm open for other job options.
OP i am really really sorry for your predicament.Though I dont have any solution to your problem but my advise for you is to look for a means to save money to start a biz or try to apply for scholarship abroad.
The both salaries you mentioned above is what a cleaner with just high school qualification in canada will make in 5-6hrs of working in a day and that is what you earn in a month .You are a lady and you need money for toiletries, cosmetics, cream, hair, clothes and feeding. How on Jesus name will somebody survive with 25k for a month.
God will punish nigerian government really good and punish those useless indians for making someone work 7am-6pm including saturdays and last thunder will fire those people against young graduates migrating for a better life.
God will really make a way, wish you all the best

@ Esosa4Real I think for health courses you should check out BVC (Bow valley college) ,U of C or Mount royal university as NAIT/SAIT are good polytechnic and you might not likely get the best from them or else you intend to study engineering and above all make sure it is a Diploma. Accommodation in Calgary varies but try to avoid NE,If you are single try and look for a shared apartment where you can combined bills pending when you stabilize and get a good job.

@Danoluwa I guess Geomatic Engineering is a part of Geology,It is good and you can even look out for GIS (Geographic Information System). The truth of the matter is you will not go for courses like Petroleum Engineering that will get you a job in Fort Mcmurray in a big Oil company and when Oil prices go down, you will be laid off while you have enough and steady bills to pay. That was why I suggested Power Engineering as you have a slot in Oil and Gas and other major companies.

Have a nice one guys

A little Info on those that have their PR's and are heading to Calgary. When you are settled in Calgary try and visit CCIS in downtown for assistance. You can benefit so much and their services are all free ranging from ESL,power engineering program class 5 & 4, Seismic training and a host of other free courses that you can take to enable you settle properly.

Again for our Engineering and Science students back home that intend to further their studies in Calgary. Please make your research very well about courses you intend to take. Some courses might be very goodback home but has little prospect here in Calgary.Go for certification courses and Diploma, dont rush into masters with the hope of getting a good job (Though it is possible).

Take time and make research about Power Engineering and dont forget to thank me later.Saying this cos I have not read anything about it on nairaland.

Cheers.

Tell us more about how to do this legitimately, even while studying.

Also, are you of the opinion that international graduate masters holders find getting a job difficult or what?

Tell me more about Calgary compare to Ontario and Victoria. If you have to choose one of the three places for study, ceteris paribus, which would you go for?

Anyway, hope the cold no too much there now. Enjoy

Did a brief landing in Ontario, dont know much about it but heard it is like civilized lags in naija with many opportunities and many wahala, I guess Victoria is in BC and heard too that it is very expensive to reside there. Can tell you SO MANY things about Calgary cos i reside there.I came to Calgary cos of the prospect in Oil and Gas though very down right now but heard also that it could be very very promising with alot of Jobs when it starts booming.
I prefer Calgary to the above provinces,I am a family man and need a place that is affordable and quiet to raise my kids. Calgarians are very very accommodating people and the city is SIMPLY neat and organised.
Make your research very well based on your intended course of study to see it Ontario will be better for you.

Cheers mate.

Guys coming to SAIT, do you guys intend to stay in calgary after graduation or move back to naija ? If you intend to stay in calgary I guess you will find it a lil difficult getting a job with masters cos most employers find it difficult to pay master holders.

Lastly, If you intend to stay in calgary/canada start hustling for your PR as soon as you land. I am studying Power Engineering in SAIT (Diploma) though I have a degree in Geology from Naija. you will definitely enjoy calgary but their school here na die. Safe Y'all

You guys should not be arguing over irrelevant issues like this, many people that migrated to Canada are not happy and so many people in naija are happy, vice versa.Someone requested for advice and it shudnt be a free for all fight. As for me and my family we have chosen Canada.Even if you offer me 1m naira monthly and Canadian citizenship,Heaven knows I will take Canadian citizenship for my personal reasons after all naija Na my root and I can come back anytime.Dont know if you have noticed how the scrutinize your green port @ the airport.Life is indeed choice driven

All your suggestions/contributions are good, but like i said previously ''life is choice driven'' . People migrate for different reasons ranging from social amenities, health care, security,Jobs etc. If I migrate today to any country, I guess I have my reasons and owe nobody any explanation.

About the topic, It depends on the visa that the OP is travelling with and again his intentions. If you are travelling to Canada to be richer than Dangote or Adenuga, please stay back and enjoy your 400k job but if you are travelling to WORK HARD and enjoy the basic amenities of life and probably create a better future for your kids then travelling abroad can definitely help you achieve this.

Lastly, if you are SUFFERING in naija and see a legit way of travelling abroad plssss dont look back abeg, the light @ the end of the tunnel in naija is off and no hope of rekindling it. I will glady look my kids in the face and tell them I brought you here to give you a better life, I am not into competition with anybody.I work in naija for 8 years and my supervisors were like gods who determine your joy and sadness but guess what, nobody gives a flying Bleep about you here, come do your work very well and go home ,though there is subtle racism but who cares.

After graduation , my wife spent 3 years looking for a job in naija all to no avail and she came here and studied health care aid, she got a job after a month (though part time) but she can buy things for herself and send little money back home.

If you like naija stay there, and if you like abroad then migrate but dont come with the mindset that you will buy private jet from hustling here.

Very educational......

Make all these our 9ja country ppl for diaspora just suggest one legit way for an average Nigerian to travel to the US, then we go know say no be debate we come follow for Nairaland

My brother I have never in my life seen where people are making legit money and will invite everybody to come and them. My humble suggestion is YOU go the extra mile to get what you want. Nobody will come online and write ALL the legit way of travelling abroad. You know your budget, how much extra you can hustle on a very good day, your educational qualification et al. Make research online, ask questions, pray .I promise you, you will be very amazed @ the response you will get .Hope I didn't offed you?

It's what I've been saying. Imagine if you didn't jump ? Everyone's destiny is different. On a side note I assume you're in Alberta ? Once you get your steam time and you're completely certified, you'll be making a lot of money as a power engineer, especially as a 2nd/3rd class.

Yes, Calgary to be precise. It is lovely and fun to run away from peace officers, immigration officers or even Cops than for one happy trigger, drunk, God and life forsaken constable to end your life in Naija .THOUGH, you will progress and settle faster when you have your legit papers but brethren @all @all na witch.
The most frustrating part of all these facts to me is simply that Naija has no plans to get better, people will say it is well, it will get better and I ask them WHEN? The rot and corruption has gotten to the grassroots that the only remedy will be to demolish the whole country and start afresh. Pls don't quote me I just spoke my mind mbok!

Personally, I think everybody that dropped a comment here on this topic is right cos na who wear shoe know where e dey pain am but for this particular topic I will use myself as a case study.
I worked 8-9 Years in naija but I was not fulfilled with the system and I became scared of what will happen to my kids with the present economic situation in the country. I have always loved to travel to Canada or USA cos of personal reasons and I didn't like Europe much unless I intend to study more or play football. I got info about FSWP, I fasted for the first time in my life and involved my cousin who is a priest and today we are enjoying Canada.
But to be honest I will advise anyone SUFFERING to leave Naija regardless if you have plans or not but DONT do DRUGS. You must always have a way out. Naija is WORST than hell fire. I don't need to be mild on this issue cos I spent nothing less than 30 years in naija and I have spent few years here I have benefitted in so so so so many ways.My daughter gets monthly from the govt.I got a scholarship to study power engineering here. Inshort , there are so many benefits that I will not want to mention here. If you jump from hell fire to enter heaven and you no make am na to fall back to hell fire wey you dey before but @least make e be say you jump.
