Abuja- 14th November, 2022. In tandem with the resolve of the National Executive Council (EXCO), Society of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers of Nigeria (SLAMEN) to continue creating national awareness and orientation of special stakeholders in the aviation industry; the National EXCO paid official familiarization visit to the MD/CEO Nigerian Airspace Management Agency at his Abuja office today 14th November, 2022 by 4pm. Speaking at the meeting, the National President, Engr C. E. Iloeje introduced SLAMEN to NAMA management and appreciated the impressive work that NAMA is doing in keeping Nigerian Airspace safe. Responding to the gesture, the MD/CEO Mr Mathew Pwajok welcome the representatives of SLAMEN. He used the opportunity to reiterate on safety standards and maintained his unresolved for the Society. He pledged to always carry SLAMEN along as regards safety seminars and correspondence involving the two organisations. In the same vein, the vice president of the Society, Engr Mubarak Haladu who is also the Director of Maintenance, Max Air Ltd expressed concerns over economic and financial loss experienced by airlines as they have to turnaround because the Airspace has to be shutdown anytime Presidents from other countries is flying into Nigeria. The MD/CEO NAMA in his response explained that this procedure is an operational protocol due to security reasons but efforts are being made to mitigate these losses and encourage airlines by speeding up the completion of the second Abuja runway which is planned to be commissioned by Minister of Aviation before the end of this istration. He therefore encouraged airlines to voluntarily report incidents as the essence of the Agency is not to punish them but to manage situations and encourage safety. The meeting ended at about 0500pm with a group photograph and felicitation.

Abuja - 16th September, 2022 Representatives from the National Executive Council (NEC) of Society of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance of Nigeria (SLAMEN) today met with the Regional Manager (RM), Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at his Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja office complex. Briefing correspondents shortly after the meeting, Engr Shadrach Ubah who led the SLAMEN representatives explained that "the meeting was the initiative of the National Executive Council of Society of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance of Nigeria (SLAMEN) led by Engr Iloeje Emmanuel (National President, SLAMEN) to familiarize and bring to notice the aims and objectives of SLAMEN". He (Engr Shadrach Ubah) appreciated the reception received from the RM, FAAN and commended his efforts especially in the areas of infrastructure and security of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja while noting that SLAMEN is aware of his efforts towards ensuring that engers fly through Abuja Terminal without any hitch. Engr Shradrach explained that SLAMEN which is a 'professional body' with its bill being deliberated at the National Assembly and not 'union' is an initiative to key into the Federal Government's vision to improve local content for craft-men in Nigeria, a situation where foreign expatriate take up jobs that can be done locally by Nigerian Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers is killing the moral of the man who ensures that the aircraft is in safe and airworthy condition before handing it over to the pilots to fly. "Foreigners are given jumbo pay in dollars with hotel accommodation and police security to do same jobs that our citizens are qualified to perform with meander salary, a situation where the Engineer to release the aircraft to service is grumbling to perform his duties as enshrined in the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs 2015)". The negligence of the Maintenance Section was one reason that affected the defunct Nigeria Airways. SLAMEN encouraged the RM, FAAN to consider consistently sharing correspondence regarding activities of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in Abuja Airport and also consider including them in its yearly 'safety week program' so as to key into Safety Awareness Campaign organized by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN); SLAMEN also used the opportunity to solicit for office space/land space for a secretariat within the Airport premises and finally requested to display SLAMEN banner at the Toll Gate. The Regional Manager (RM), Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Kabir Yusuf Mohammed while responding; onceagain welcome SLAMEN to his office and reiterated his full for SLAMEN Activities, gave approval to allocate land space to SLAMEN for their secretariat within the Airport premises and promised to allocate an office to SLAMEN on completion of FAAN complex at Abuja Airport. He also approved display of SLAMEN banner at Abuja Airport Toll Gate free of charge since SLAMEN is a non profit organization. The RM, FAAN described the situation where jobs meant for qualified citizens are being taken over by foreigners as pathetic and encouraged diligent Qualified Engineers to continue to carryout their duties in the interest of safety stating that someday they will be recognized. He commended the activities of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers within Abuja Airport and wants them to maintain the safety culture in line with standard and recommended practices in International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annexes. The courtesy visit ended with pleasantries and group photograph. NAN Correspondent.

Having studied this concept for years, I would say it requires a lot of coordination. Some of the reasons why it's difficult to swiftly respond to internal security attacks includes: Politics: I notice that the federal government play politics with funding the tactical units. Most of the units suffer poor funding. Training: most of the personnel are not trained, some untrained special forces retreat in battle during attack. Intelligence gathering: operatives mostly go in with few or little details. Most are blind to relevant information needed to surrender the enemies. Lack of drones: government keep acquiring this vital technical equipment on white paper yearly. Timing: it requires approximately 30mins to take off on attack helicopters when all is green including supply of aviation fuel. Lack of fuel dump (storage) causes delay in take off even with express clearance from the air traffic controller. Fighter jet requires at least same amount of time for safety flight pre-checks and clearance from the office of the national security adviser. Lack of readily available Combat: In this period of security challenge, a serious government will maintain and rotate at least half unit of combat men inside the airport base which will cost them personnel allowance probably weekly, accommodation around d airport base, and advanced weaponry. They will receive short briefing from the control room and immediately proceed for mission. This include cost of maintaining and rotating flight crew to make the flight operations possible. Standby combat trained pilots and maintenance crew for each attack aircraft. Constitution powers: Then there is this problem of information Sharing among agencies, everyone wants to do eachodas job and take glory, even among armed forces. Some times information gets spoilt when it travels from one organisation to another. Problem of Over using same personnel: lack of shift duty and rest on the operatives Lack of welfare: no welfare package most times for the men actually risking their lives on land and in the air. Other issues are being stimulated. Government need to do more to provide more weapons, more attack aircrafts at least two in a state (12per geopolitical zone) to bring air power closer to all regions, more training for personnel on land and on air. Above all, government need to review it's policies. We fight because of government policies. A situation where the people say they dont want cows or ranch routes and the government want it by force, people will revolt and this leads to more security challenges. The people are divided towards ethnic and tribal perspective. if the people wants restructuring, decentralization, state police and these tins are done in civilized clime, why say no if not greed to hold on to power at the Centre. Aggrieved groups and unsatisfied politicians will tend to hijack the security to teach the incumbent lessons. The police and other security agencies suffer in all.

There are rules to everything Protest! protest!! protest!!! Even in civilized countries, In Ghana, once you are flashed the siren light, you are expected to pull over. Different countries with different rules. Case of Owerri DPO is still fresh. Once you are ordered to maintain a safe zone or line or move back by the police, he is expecting you to disobey and launch and offensive, legally it becomes disobedience to police order. Please stay safe and learn simple safety while on peaceful protest. Mods: it appears more protest are to come so citizens should know this while showing grievances. Only in Africa do robbers shoot people without guns, its against the gun rule. Even in war, its against relevant United Nation's article for a soldier to shoot an unarmed person. But due to the nature of the black man, we dont understand these rules before handling weapons. |
