Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state has emerged chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, as exclusively projected by TIMES . Mr. Yari emerged at the end of the meeting of the Forum held at the Lagos/Osun Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The outgoing chairman of the body and Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, read the communique of the meeting to journalists. Mr. Amaechi said Mr. Yari emerged chairman by consensus and would serve for a period of one year. Mr. Yari was former deputy chairman of the Forum. A new deputy chairman was however not elected at the meeting to replace him. The Rivers Governor also said after over a year of bickering, the governors had now “reconciled and are United as a single umbrella association of the 36 state governors of Nigeria”. Mr. Amaechi also said in the light of the fact that funds in the Excess Crude were last disbursed in May 2013, “there is the need for the Minister of Finance and coordinating Minister for the economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo -Iweala to provide explanation for accruals to this from June 2013 to April 2015 which is estimated at over N20billion”. The Rivers Governor added that induction programme for new and returning governors would be held in June 2015. He said the induction is aimed at equipping new and returning governors with knowledge of global best practices of establishing and running their offices. In addition, Mr. Amaechi said the Forum resolved at the meeting to set up a Governors’ Forum Academy to be called “The NGF Leadership Academy” which will be responsible for capacity building of governors and other officials holding public office. He said the academy would be overseen by the NGF secretariat. |

There are indications that the national leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party might have perfected a fresh strategy aimed at stalling the March 28 presidential election. Investigations by our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday and Friday showed that the ruling party was actually the brain behind those who ed Young Democratic Party and that it may use this new party to achieve its objective. The new party had on Thursday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to postpone the forthcoming general elections. The party said this a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the commission to YDP as a political party. At a press briefing in Abuja, the party called on INEC to re-schedule the general elections if it could not accommodate it on its ballot paper. It said that contrary to insinuations, the court did not order INEC to only the party, but added that the commission was ordered to issue certificate and include YDP in the 2015 elections. National Publicity Secretary of YDP, Mr. Ugo Nwofor, said there were only two options available to INEC, saying the commission could either reprint its ballot papers and include the party with a view to accommodate the party’s candidates or shift the elections. Nwafor said, “If INEC does not have the appropriation for logistics for reprinting of its ballot papers then INEC ought to within the constitutional provision further re-schedule the general election so as to accommodate our party. “In either of the two options, our party is ready, it has been a long journey for YDP; we wish INEC would explore the first option.” Shortly after the press briefing, one of the brains behind the YDP was seen at the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja on Thursday evening, where he said he had come to confer with some of its officers. In a confidential discussion with our correspondent, he said he had come to brief the party on the success of their legal work which made the court to order that the new party be ed. When our correspondent called him on the telephone on Friday whether they were planning a fresh legal option to compel INEC to comply with the court order, he answered in the affirmative. According to him, “Recall that I was at the national headquarters of the ruling party in Abuja on Thursday where I met our partners. We are working together to move the nation forward and deepen our renascent democracy. “We have already fixed the dates for our convention and we would pick our presidential and other candidates for the elections. We expect INEC to give us a chance as stated in the court order.” However, it was learnt that one of the strategies of the ruling party in connection with the YDP is to head for the court and ask that the presidential election be set aside, by pleading that the party was excluded. “This is what we would do if President Jonathan loses the elections,” a source at the national headquarters of the party added. But if the president wins, it was gathered that the party would not show any interest in pursuing any case in the court. Nwofor, however, said that the party was interested in contesting the election, adding that this was in compliance with Sections 85 and 87 of the electoral Act. “Because of this, the party has fixed its governorship/House of Assembly and Presidential and National Assembly primaries for March 26 and 27 respectively,” he added. It was gathered that the party cleverly picked the dates in order to make sure that the election slated for March 28 does not hold or to make it have a legal proof for exclusion. The party was believed to have known that submission of candidates list for elections expired 60 days to the election. An INEC official said that the “commission and Nigerians are aware of the provision of the law on this.” Nwafor, however, said that his party had commenced the sales of nomination forms due to the court judgement. He said, “We have approved sales of nomination forms as follows; Presidential (N15m), governorship (N3m), Senate (N1m), House of Representatives (N500,000) and House of Assembly (200,000).” He described the Wednesday’s judgement as victory for democracy, rule of law and triumph over impunity. It was however gathered that the national leadership of the new party was waiting for the commission to reach out to it tomorrow on the judgement. One of their elders, who spoke with our correspondent, said that “we expect the commission to reach out to us and ask us to send the names of our presidential and other candidates. “In the alternative, the commission can also reach out to us, discuss with us and we may say that we are not fielding candidates for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, which come up first. “The result of the discussion will determine what we would do for the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections, which holds April 11.” Efforts made to speak with the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh on the issue failed. He neither picked nor responded to a text message sent to him. |

Contrary to earlier denials, embattled ministerial nominee, Musiliu Obanikoro, has confessed to several Senators in Abuja that he did participate in an election-eve meeting in Ekiti in June 2014 in which a group of politicians and government ministers met with a Nigerian army general to rig the governorship election in favor of Ayodele Fayose, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The meeting, which is now known as “Ekitigate”, was secretly taped by an army captain who was subsequently forced to flee for his life. Despite the scandal, President Jonathan went ahead to nominate Obanikoro into his cabinet for the second time, and the nominee is lobbying the Senators to give him a during his nomination hearing. It is in the process that he has confessed to some of them that he was indeed present at the rigging meeting in Akure, on behalf of the President, to ensure that everything went smoothly. Obanikoro’s story is that he was simply making “peace” between the army and Ayo Fayose at the meeting, claiming that he was not party to any conversation about rigging. On the contrary, Obanikoro, who was at the time junior Minister for Defence, is overheard clearly on the tape bragging about the authority granted him by President Jonathan. Prior to itting his involvement to the Senators, the former minister met with President Jonathan to discuss the tape and his role. A presidency source said Obanikoro told President Jonathan he was present at the meeting but that a part of the audio-recording was “doctored”. They said President Jonathan had called him to the meeting to discuss how to mitigate the damage created by the leaked tape. He told the Senators categorically that it was Jonathan himself who had sent him to Ekiti to help Fayose win the election. On the tape, Obanikoro says, at least twice, that he is on a “mission” for the President. He also reportedly told President Jonathan at their meeting that he had asked his US-based lawyers to do a separate voice analysis of the tape and that the lawyers came back with “proof” that certain aspects of the tape had been doctored by SaharaReporters to make the regime look bad. Counting on that assurance, President Jonathan told a team of reporters from the Wall Street Journal during an interview that the tapes were not real and that he would not investigate the incident. Obanikoro also told President Jonathan that his US-based lawyers had assured him that they could file some cases against SaharaReporters in the US to “teach SaharaReporters and its publisher, Omoyele Sowore” a lesson. He explained to the president that with enough financial , his lawyers would file the case and also employ private detectives to take down SaharaReporters. President Jonathan reportedly nodded at the idea, and asked Obanikoro not to worry. Following that meeting, the former Minister began a series of legal threats last week claiming to have sued SaharaReporters, as well as The Punch newspaper and Times, both in Lagos. Up until now, those newspapers are yet to be served copies of the lawsuit. On Tuesday night, Obanikoro, who is also a US citizen, assured some of the Senators that his US lawyers had already filed the libel suit against SaharaReporters in New York. On Wednesday, Obanikoro deployed a small rented a crowd of protesters to hold placards in front of the National Assembly to denounce the All Progressives Congress. It is to be noted that two other key participants at the meeting, Police Minister Jelili Adesiyan and Ayo Fayose, the beneficiary of the Ekiti governorship rigging, have itted that they were at the meeting that was taped by the army captain. For Obanikoro’s role in the rigging of the election, APC has advocated his being banned from holding any public office, and asked the Senate not to confirm him. Mr. Jonathan is known to have re- nominated Obanikor as his prize for stepping down from the PDP governorship race in Lagos. saharareporters.com/2015/02/18/ministerial-nominee-obanikoro-confesses-he-was-ekiti-rigging-meeting-says-jonathan-sent |

A Fourteen year-old boy, Alaji, from kerenua, who was forced to serve the terrorist Boko Haram group, has narrated his experience after being abducted by the group in an early morning invasion, where security forces were attacked and homes burnt. Alaji explained in an interactive session that he was adopted at gun point by two men on a motorcycle and taken to a town where he saw hundreds of fighters of the terrorist group. “I was abducted at gun point by two men on a motorcycle and taken to a town occupied by the group. After a day, we moved to another town, then another, that was how we kept on. “There were lots of us, I saw hundreds of fighters, there were also many captives, but all of us including the captives, were set on groups but not in one place within the camps,” he said. Talking about the activities in the camp, Alaji said that the females in the camp were morally and sexually abused while the males were being sent on errands. “There were lots of women in the camps, they raped and abused them. “For boys like me, we run errands but everyone knows the repercussion for disobedience, they enforce discipline. “they don’t let captives to mix freely,” he stated, adding that this goes to show that the jihad they claim to be waging was not true. On part of their recruitment strategies, he stressed that they were selected based on their strengths. “we were selected based on our strengths. they put us in trucks and armoured personal carriers. “They gave the weaker ones gallons of petrol to burn houses and buildings, and the stronger ones bullets and guns. Our responsibility to deliver this, is to fight on the battle fields during attacks,” the fourteen year old stated. Alaji, who was forcefully drafted by Boko Haram, stressed on the biggest loss and the most frightening battle he experienced with the group. “The biggest loss I witnessed with Boko Haram was in Gamboru in the hands of the military. The Leader was so furious that he shot and killed two commanders right before us. “The most frightening battle was the attack on Baga. when the town was attacked, initially it was difficult to break through,” Alaji said. He also went on that the residents came after them and they were left with no choice than to retreat. Alaji also said the residents were later ed by the Multinational t Task Force where they seized equipment and ammunition from the terrorist group. He said the group comprises of fighters from Nigeria and other countries adding that some of the foreign fighters insisted that the campaign they waged in Nigeria be extended to their countries. Alaji later revealed that some unidentified people do come at night to meet with the leaders of the terrorist group. “At night, we see a convoy of cars that include armoured tanks, and then a green helicopter will arrive. Those inside will then meet the top commanders. “Whenever we see the aircraft arrive then go, then we know that the next day, a major attack would be launched. But people like us are not allowed to go near the leaders. He further explained that he was able to escape in the course of an attacked to be launched in Mongolo. “I was ordered to carry two fighters on motorcycle to Mongolo where we arrived at dawn. The first attack was on the military barracks there. “When residents of Mongolo were leaving, I seized the opportunity and rode off with the motorcycle and head to Maiduguri where I was taken to my parents whom I lost with since the day I was taken. “Everybody thought I was dead or I had formally ed the group,” Alaji said. MARCH OVER, A NEW DISCOVERY. WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF? The moment I heard that the General Election was postponed till march 28th,2015, I took a swift action into history and gladly discovered that this postponement is an Aural of Divinity. March is very significant in the political History of the world. President F.Kennedy of US, an opposition candidate won Presidential election in March,1968. Former Zimbabwe prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai lost an election to an opposition presidential candidate, Robert Mugabe in the month of march. I also glanced through ukraine history and saw how a ruling party lost presidential election in march 2003. March is always a good time to march over and take control. It is the best time for an opposition party to march over and win election. Buhari is fully ready to march over. Please the marching Team March4Buhari. 1 Like |

Nigerian Christians at home and abroad will be shocked by the reported crass opportunism of some of their religious leaders as next week’s presidential polls draw closer, SaharaReporters has learned. Authoritative sources disclose that during a meeting of Christian leaders held recently, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor expressed a strangely personal reason why he is not ing the clamor of Nigerians for change in the country. Oritsejafor told his colleagues at the event, which was convened at the Redemption Camp of the Redeemed Christian Church of God on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that oil bloc leases are due for renewal this year, and if the Buhari- Osinbajo ticket prevails, his chances of owning one would diminish. “The oil in my father’s backyard,” he specifically said. “I don’t own one bloc, and all these Northerners have oil blocs!” The CAN president has been known to be an ardent er of President Goodluck Jonathan, and anopponent of his leading challenger, General Mohammadu Buhari. What shocked many of the Christian leaders at the meeting, howver, was his message that he was less interested in good governance or the killing of innocent Nigerians by Boko Haram in the Northeastern part of Nigeria, and more so about his desire to also own an oil bloc this year. Reported to be an even more vocal er of Jonathan at the meeting was Bishop David Oyedepowho reportedly said it would be an insult to have any of the Christian leaders at the meeting to vote for Buhari. At a point, a respected pastor, Bishop Mike Okonkwo of TREM, lambasted the meeting for not inviting Pastor Yemi Osinbajo to witness the meeting, being himself a Christian leader and pastor. According to Okonkwo, the least the Christian leaders could have done was invite Osinbajo and hear from him, adding that not doing that was “an act of cowardice.” Oyedepo, our source said, did not take kindly to that suggestion from a Bishop of equal caliber, and demanded an apology from Okonkwo. Okonkwo, equally annoyed, insisted on his position and refused to offer an apology at the tension-filled meeting. Sources said the conveners of the meeting did not want to invite Osinbajo as the candidates on the other ticketwere also not represented. But some sources at the meeting said it was a disgrace that a fellow pastor at their level, running for Vice- President was not even allowed to sit in at the meeting which was convened under the banner of the Nigerian Apostolic Coalition, hip of which he was entitled to. While Oyedepo maintained his advocacy for President Jonathan at the meeting, at times in vehement anger and outright disrespect for the opposing views of the other pastors, a leading Bishop from the North spoke up against the plans of Oyedepo and Oritsejafor to mobilize for the president. Christian leaders in the North have always criticized the lust of some Southern Christian leaders for material things making them not to empathize with the sufferings of the Christians in the North, who are facing persecution. Bishop Jonas Katung of the Maranatha Churchin Josexplained that President Jonathan has done nothing in the past four years deserving of a second term. Katung, who is known as the Lion of Jos, was ordained Bishop in Jos by RCCG’s Pastor E.A. Adeboye in 2013. He strongly advocated that the Buhari-Osinbajo ticket should be given a chance given the level of failure of the incumbent. Pastor Mathew Kasali of the Foundation of Truth Assembly in Lagos also spoke ionately at the meeting, calling on the Christian leaders to remain neutral and not become encumbered with partisan issues for any reason. He also ed Bishop Okonkwo that Pastor Osinbajo, “who is one of us,” should be allowed to address the meeting. A source at the meeting disclosed that the national clamor for change in the country as being captured by the Buhari- Osinbajo ticket has now become a source of great fear by several Christian leaders in the Southern part of the country, essentially because of their own selfish interests. He asked in disappointment, “Where is the fear of God in the lives of some of these leaders?” |

Chairman The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) Ibrahim Zikirullahi in a protest letter to the NEDG Executive Secretary Eddie Emessiri obtained by our reporter on Saturday in Abuja also accused the organisers of fraudulently using its name to solicit fund without its consent. "For the avoidance of doubt, TMG wants to make it clear that at no time were we invited either verbally or in writing to participate in putting together the 2015 Presidential Election Debates. We are therefore dismayed that our name and corporate identity has been used, including in requests for sponsorship, creating the impression that TMG is officially in the know of these debates. "To say the least, we find the unauthorized use of our corporate identity in canvassing for funding, and in creating the impression that we are an integral part of the project, unacceptable. This runs contrary to the objectives of transparency and probity that an otherwise laudable project like the Presidential Debates would seek to entrench in Nigeria’s democratic space," Zikirullahi said. He said the TMG believes in deepening Nigeria’s democracy and would ordinarily be at the forefront of promoting activities like the debate for candidates but would however not be party to underhand moves that sacrifice due process and good conscience on the altar of expediency. Former Nigeria’s president Olusegun Obasanjo has spoken about the certificate controversy rambling WASC certificate of the presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) General Muhammadu Buhari (retd). Obasanjo said that incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan is aware that his opponent is capable to run for February presidential poll but some hawks with Jonathan, do not want him to contest because they believed that he will win and come for them. According to ex-president, “The issue came up in 2007, and we investigated and found out that his WASC is with the military and that was why he was allowed to contest in 2007. “Buhari cannot listen to anyone about his certificates because as a General of Nigeria Army, he will speak when he chooses not by Femi Fani Kayode and Okupe asking him. Fayose and other corrupt people including Kashamu do not want Buhari because of his anti- corruption slogan. Than Obasanjo disclosed that “even Jonathan did not finish his PhD course but when it was presented we stated that, it does not matter but many people do not know because it was PDP thing. I see Buhari as the next President and Jonathan is aware of that, and that is the reason they are hitting him everywhere to put confusion in his camp. But a General is always a General .” |
