fergie001:
Excerpts of Charles Aniagolu (CA) 's interview with ex-Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi

Amaechi: It's not because I am the best, I had the opportunity I utilised the opportunity so when opportunity came for me to be the Speaker of the Parliament. Dr Odili and I spoke, he felt it was important I became the Speaker, I said okay I became the Speaker and utilised the opportunity. The problem is not when you get the opportunity the problem is what do you do with the opportunity and God knows I was one of the best Speakers this country had produced at that material time. I don't know what's happening now maybe there are better Speakers than I was but at that time nobody will deny me the fact that I performed my duty as Speaker. I was elected to be the Chairman of Speakers Forum, since I left as Chairman of Speakers Forum I wonder if that Forum is still in existence.
Again I became Governor too by the grace of God, by the grace of Dr Odili and the people of Rivers too and the Judiciary, because at the end of the day the Judiciary pronounced me Governor. Now when I was sworn to the office of the Governor, you will ask the question did you perform? Of course I did.

CA: Well, You will say you performed, wouldn't you? You are not going to say you didn't perform, nobody will say that..

Amaechi: I will like you to open your phone lines and call people from Rivers State. People are building flyovers here and making noise, I built six flyovers, they are there without making noise and I didn't call President to come and commission them. I built primary schools, let any other Governor in Rivers State who built primary schools come forward and say so. I built secondary schools that people were calling Universities. Two children per room in those schools and I got an Agency in India to come and manage those schools, so they brought science teachers from India and Art teachers from Nigeria.

CA: What's happened to them now?

Amaechi: Abandoned, vandalised

CA: It must break your heart?

Amaechi: That's why I don't go to Rivers State because it gives you mental disorder. Now within that period we tried to build a new city, we have finished with 24hr power supply, it was abandoned and vandalised. I am not one that, you see, the thing with me is don't give me an assignment, I will deliver. Okay, let's go to Ministerial appointment, I began and completed the railway from Lagos to Ibadan, I began and completed the Lekki Deep Sea Port, from beginning and got it completed before I left office. Go to Kano, there is an Inland Dey Port that I completed, and I told the owner of the Inland Dry Port that you must build a Primary and Secondary school here, to enable the children who run after us when we come here go to school free-of-charge and he did that. I commenced the construction of Kano-Kaduna, I completed Kaduna-Abuja which was started by President Goodluck Jonathan, I started the Kano-Maradi and it's going on so, don't give me an assignment because I will discharge it responsibly. I won't go about abusing people, talking... Maturity.
Let me tell you what my second son tells me; we normally have conversations as a family, you know current politicians are not ashamed, they don't bother about their name, they don't bother about their character. If I do anything that is wrong you know what my second son will tell me; Dad you are not the only Amaechi, I am too. So if you do something that rubs off on the name Amaechi, it affects all of us, but if you do something that affects your Rotimi I don't mind that but unfortunately you are not just Rotimi but Rotimi Amaechi and there are so many of us who bear the name. So of my family are always cautious because of that name.
Most politicians now don't think about their name or their character, I wonder whether they don't think their children should be ashamed of themselves.

“When I go back in my quiet moments, I play the video of speeches of the governor (Fubara), what he said, what he did to me, I weep. Was it necessary? This is somebody who brought you, gave you food, gave you everything, did this to you, and then you became a tool for his enemies to fight him.” -

-- Nyesom Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, has said he weeps in his quiet time whenever he watches videos of what the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara said about him.

The former Governor of Rivers State, disclosed this during his routine live media parley in Abuja, on Monday.

Wike stated that he does not have any crisis with Fubara, and while responding to a question, if it was time to lift the state of emergency in Rivers, said he was in no position to answer the question since it was President Bola Tinubu that imposed the state of emergency.

He said: “I don’t know anything about crisis between me and Fubara. I don’t have any crisis with him, I’m not the president who would lift the state of emergency. If Mr. President had called me that time, I wouldn’t have accepted the state of emergency. So he knows. He knows what to lift.

“So the issue of the government is right or not does not arise. What I said was that his potential emergency was to save the Governor, because the Governor was almost impeached. That was not our own hope. We wanted to act for the people, we had said so several times. But the president is his wisdom. And that’s why I said the government said it. That his people should not be talking too much, that the President says the same thing.”

On Fubara’s speech, WIke said, “I did not say it. He said it. Now the point I’m making, what is the crisis? I have told you several times. I don’t want crisis. But rather, the governor unknown to me, brought himself as a tool to those who couldn’t fight me to fight me. when people talk about resolution, sometimes, when I go back, in my quiet moments, I play the video of the speeches of the governor. What he said, What he did to me, I weep, was it necessary?”

Speaking at the APC National Summit, Akpabio said;

"I want to move that not only would President Tinubu be the APC sole candidate for the presidency in 2027, but he would also be the sole candidate for the whole Nigerian population. Because all other political parties have been turned into shreds. Nigerians are saying that because you have done a difficult job well, it’s time for us to reward you by sending you back to the presidency".

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio

Human rights lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has faulted the proposed bill seeking to make voting mandatory in Nigeria, stating that he would rather be imprisoned than obey such a law.

Agbakoba, who made this declaration on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television on Monday, condemned the attempt of the National Assembly to enforce compulsory voting, arguing that it fails to address the root causes of voter apathy in the country.

“Look at the ridiculous one in the National Assembly about voting being compulsory. If that bill were to , I would say, ‘Agbakoba, we will not obey it.’ I’ll plead conscientious objection. I’d rather go to prison for six months than to obey it,” he said.

The senior lawyer questioned the rationale behind the bill, saying, “Why would the National Assembly want to impose compulsory voting? Why don’t they reverse the question and say, Why are Nigerians not interested? What is the apathy about?”

According to him, voter disengagement stems from years of exclusion and unfulfilled political promises, not a lack of civic responsibility, adding that exclusion is at the heart of Nigeria’s democratic failure.

The rights lawyer, while looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, maintained that he has noticed a troubling pattern, warning that democracy in Nigeria cannot succeed if it continues to serve only a select elite.

When asked whether the real issue is the attractiveness of public office and the consistent failure of leadership, Agbakoba restated that Nigeria’s political failure is the core reason behind low voter turnout.

DAILY POST reports that the bill, which. scaled second reading in the House of Representatives, seeks to mandate voting for all Nigerians of eligible age in national and state elections.

The bill is tly sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and a Labour Party lawmaker, Daniel Asama Ago.

Atiku: Obasanjo and I tackled Boko Haram in 2002 — it didn’t resurface till we left.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has claimed that he and then-President Olusegun Obasanjo swiftly ended Boko Haram’s activities “within a few weeks in 2002”.

Abubakar served as vice-president from 1999 to 2007 under Obasanjo, who led Nigeria during the fourth republic after the end of military rule.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a visit by stakeholders from Kogi east senatorial district led by Simon Achuba, former Kogi deputy governor, Abubakar attributed the early success against insurgents to strong political will.

The former vice-president claimed that Boko Haram first appeared in Yobe state in 2002, prompting Obasanjo to consult him on a response.

“I have taken note of some of the issues you have raised. I am bewildered by this issue of security. There have been a number of debates about the cause of this insecurity,” Abubakar said.

“Some people argue that it is being promoted from within; others say from outside. But what I can testify to is that there is a very, very unserious attitude by our government.

“You when Boko Haram started? It was actually in 2002. We were in office, and the president sent for me. It started in Yobe, actually.

“And I said, ‘Mr President, let’s call the service chiefs and give them a deadline. If they cannot put it down, then they should put down their uniforms and go away.

“He called the service chiefs—I was there—and gave them marching orders. Within a few weeks, they put down the insurgency in Yobe. It never came up again till we left office.”

Abubakar blamed successive leaders’ indecisiveness for Boko Haram’s later resurgence, stating that their failure to take firm action allowed the group to regain strength over time.

“One thing I would say is that there is a lack of political will. When they are killing your citizens, how you can even eat and not give a damn is the greatest irresponsibility by any political leader anywhere,” he said.

“I hold our leadership responsible for all this insecurity that is going on across the country. Firstly, we are under-policed.

“We do not have enough police officers in this country. We have so many educated and unemployed individuals—why can’t they be recruited into the police?”

Abubakar added that as leaders of various communities and of a coalition involving major political parties, his visitors must unite against an inefficient government.

For over a decade, Boko Haram wreaked havoc in Nigeria, killing thousands of Nigerians and displacing others, especially in the north-east.

Boko Haram started in 2002 in Maiduguri, capital of Borno, as an Islamist group founded by the late Mohammed Yusuf, initially focusing on religious teachings and establishing a base of followers.

In July 2009, Boko Haram launched coordinated attacks across Bauchi, Maiduguri (Borno), Potiskum (Yobe), and Wudil (Kano), resulting in nearly 1,000 deaths, including both civilians and security personnel.

The violence escalated when Nigerian forces captured and summarily executed Boko Haram’s leader Yusuf in Maiduguri, intensifying the group’s insurgency under new leadership.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has accused Media Personality, Dr Reuben Abati of hiding behind the TV to abuse him.

Speaking on Channels TV Politics Today on Tuesday, the former Edo Governor challenged Abati to a physical meeting to test their strengths.

He further alleged that Abati was behind the false viral claim that he said "once anyone s APC, their sins are forgiven".

Oshiomhole described Dr Abati as paranoid because of his failed bid to become Ogun State deputy Governor.

“If you are angry because you wanted to be a deputy governor and you lost an election in Ogun State, is that the reason you are paranoid, using every opportunity to abuse me? If you want to abuse me, don’t hide behind the TV; let’s meet in the street and fight it out”, Senator Adams Oshiomhole said.

A former Federal Lawmaker from Rivers State and an Ally of the FCT Minister, Senator George Thompson Sekibo has called on the suspended Rivers State Governor, Mr Sim Fubara to resign following his statement that his spirit has left the Government House.

Recall that Fubara while speaking during a night of Tributes for late Pa Edwin Clark had cautioned his ers against certain actions which may jeopardise the peace process, questioning his interest to return to the Government House since his spirit has left there and he now has peace within himself.

The statement had drawn mixed reactions.

A professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has revealed how he turned down an opportunity to be part of a federal cabinet in Nigeria.

He said this on Friday in an interview on Channels Television.

“Let me state clearly, I will not run for public office, I will not accept an appointment, contract by any government in Nigeria. My only concern is the well-being of the next generation.

“I have lived my life decently without government money or stealing anybody’s thing. I want to take that away from people who talk nonsense like, ‘Oh, he is looking for contract,” he stated.

APC has recently tackled Prof Utomi for forming a shadow government against President Bola Tinubu.
