I say a big congratulation to all 2014 Batch C Corps ing out today. I wish them all good luck in their journey into the labour market.

MY ADVICE:
- Think Positive: Never cloud your mind with negative thoughts about the job market. There are jobs.
- Learn a Skill: employers recruit because of skill-gap.
- Be Creative with your Job Search methods
- Start Small: Sacrifice one year to garner experience. Intern whether paid or unpaid. Garner experience! Once you do that, money flows. Trust me.
- Rebrand: drop bad accent, slang & unserious fashion.
- Finally, be on the good side of natural/metaphysical laws governing the universe.
SEE YOU AT THE TOP

»»». Go Early:
Please, no matter how close the camp might
be to your street, enable to go early. If you
are posted to a far state, go the day before
the camp opens. They will allow you in.
Going late will make you go through
registration stress. Be warned!
»»». Screening:
The screening starts at the gate, where your
loads are open and thoroughly search. They
don’t want you to bring in prohibited items
like iron, knives, bombs, electrical appliances, etc.
»»». Registration:
The first registration will certainly be for
hostel/Bedspace, where you'll be given tags
to identify with. Then the paper registrations
proper follows. Try as much as possible to
make everything available. Look out for
information pasted on walls. Follow
instructions strictly.
»»». Your Kits:
During the registration, you will get all your
kits 5/5 official kit(shirts, shorts and shoes). Use the
marker to write your Code Number (CN) on
them ‘sharp-sharp ” You will also be given a
tag that will show your CN. That will be your
ID Card temporarily. You take it everywhere
in camp. You will be given a meal ticket.
Misplace it and forget about NYSC food.
»»». Duration:
You will be in the camp for 20 full days. The
21st day is the day you will be leaving the
camp.
»»». No Room For Casual Wears:
Immediately you have your kits, only your T-
shirt and shorts with the tennis shoe are
allowed on you. No room for casual wears.
Parade/marching training starts
immediately. The soldiers will not give you
breathing space at all. You will have the
first one that same Day One.
Watch Out! people could be fainting on the
Parade Ground. You won’t faint, calm
down… So eat well. It’s the stress that
causes their fainting.
»»». Morning Regimented Programme:
A small trumpet wakes you at 4am
Everybody gathers at the Parade Ground
(PG) at 4:30am. You have your praise,
worship and prayer the Christian and Muslim
ways. After the morning onitions and drills, by
7am, breakfast follows! After eating, you will
be called out again for the series of
programmes lined up for you. Then you have
your lunch. Rest a little and you are out
again for evening parade. Then later your
dinner. This will repeat itself everyday
perhaps except on Sunday.
»»». Hate The Food And Feed Yourselves At
Your Costs: You may not like the food. You
can always go to the Mammy Market (MM)
i.e the Camp Market to fill your ‘tank’ with
delicacies at your cost.
»»». Stealing:
Stealing is prevalently prevailing at the
Camp. This is ‘legalised’. They can steal
anything. Be wise.
»»». Soldiers:
Please i beckon on you all to respect and
obey them. Although they are not permitted
to beat you, however, they can punish you.
No walking, its all jogging when they call
you. Don’t prostrate or kneel down greeting
a soldier. Do it the soldier way. They could
be friendly anyway.
»»». Allawe:
Your first allowance (#19, 800) will be given
to you in the camp, and it will be in cash. All
other ones will be through the bank. You
will also get Bicycle Allowance.
»»». Photography:
Photographers are going to be everywhere
ready to snap you, please be prudent in
spending.
»»». By Now You're Done With Camp &Going
to Your Place Of Primary Assignment (PPA):
You will be posted from the camp to where
you will work. The place you work in is
called your Place of Primary Assignment
(PPA). Hear this: most Corps , I
mean about 90% of the Corpers will be
posted to schools (especially primary and
secondary schools). Only VERY FEW will be
posted to the universities, polytechnics and
Colleges. It will great if you have a request letter from
any firm you prefer to work at.
Please! Don’t lobby for your posting. Don’t
pay anybody for assistance. Pray rather than
pay. Gone are the days when Corps
are posted to Banks and Co.
Receive the shocking or expected postings
as you receive your letters with joy. It’s a
clarion call to service; that’s what dey call
it.
»»». Transportation Out Of Camp:
When you get your Posting Letter, the first
place to go to is your PPA. If you are
identified with the Fellowship in camp, you
may first report at the temporary lodge they
will provide. Then you could report at your
PPA later same day or the following day.
Please, when you leave the camp, home-
sweet-home will be on your mind, having
been used up in the camp. But please, don’t
go home straight. Please! Very few of your
employers (i.e. PPAs) will send down
vehicles to convey you from the camp to
their workplaces. Private and some Govt
higher education institutions do. The
Fellowship too make arrangement for you at
your cost. Commercial transporters will
likely be
available at the gate too. Be wise.
»»». Accommodation At PPA:
You don’t know anybody in Benue or Kogi!
Where will you sleep on the first day (Kogi and Benue
people are nice anyway)? The
Fellowship may give you a temporary
accommodation pending the time you will
have to get yours. You could be lucky if
your employer gives you a room. Many of
them don’t give Corpers accommodation
anyway. So be prepared to rent one at your
cost. Your
first ‘allowee’ which you received in the
camp is already going down!
»»». Clearance:
This is why you don’t have to go home
straight. Your registration (clearance) at the
NYSC Office in the Local Govt you will be
posted to is important. Failure to complete it
before going home is the beginning of your
problem. He may begin to have problems
with his subsequent monthly allowances. Do
all registrations first. Then you can take
permission to go home. Long process! You
will know why it’s so. Well, I hope these few
tips will go a long way to help you.
In order to ensure a seamless registration
process, printing of call-up letters and so
on,
prospective corps are urged to frequently

Martins301:
If you missed the thread put up by Goldenheart on 8 things you must do before ing out from NYSC, you can read it HERE.

This thread is to highlight the skills you must learn, whether male or female, before you out from NYSC. Learning at least 2 of them will equip you for the hard life most ex-corpers are facing outside. Learn more than 5 of them and you won't think of searching for a job.

1. Computer/Internet
I just can't overemphasize this one. We are in 2015 not 1990. If you can't use a computer by now and you out from NYSC without learning the skill you are on a long thing. For your information, most companies are going digital and CVs are no longer written by hand. To build an online profile or even open an email, you need to know how to use a computer and the internet. Imagine some corpers will know how to chat on whatsapp but can't the app through the internet. Some know how to use BBM, 2GO, WHATSAPP just name it but they don't know how use OPERAMINI to browse, search for information or carry out other important internet based activities that will enhance the career. Well, a word is enough for the wise.

2. Agriculture
Just choose any specific area whether rearing of animals or planting of crops and learn the in and out of it. You will have ample time to practice on a small scale especially if you are serving in a rural area. Who knows, agriculture may give you your first 1 million naira/dollar instead of one fairytale white coller job. The wise ones will understand. If you need ideas please run to Agriculture section of Nairaland. You will never regret doing so.

3. Driving
Many job opportunities have ed me by because I don't know how to drive. I wish I knew earlier, I would have learnt while I was serving. Now wey things don hard for me, how I go take learn am come be problem cos I can't afford a driving school. Thats my story, do you want your story to be a similar one? Make the right choice now. Learn to drive. Save something out of that tiny allowance and use it to learn. You won't regret doing so.

4. Barbing
Having this skill can fetch you some income while you await that big job that will change your story so please don't let it go.

5. Make Up
Ladies you suppose know na. Trust me, you can buy a hummer jeep if you learn this skill very well. Who no dey make up for Naija? Even Baba Buhari still dey make up. Imagine the money that lady is making. Go buy make up kit begin practice sharp sharp. Before one year you go don turn expert.

6. Shoe/Bag/Bead Making
Thank God we are no longer in the days of Baba Jonathan when people wore no shoes. As long as people wear shoes, carry bags and adorn themselves with beads, your services will always be needed. Do I need to expantiate more?

7. Cooking/Baking/Frying
This is the best opportunity to sharpen your curlinary skills. Go online and find out how to prepare any meal. Prepare small dishes that your alawee can carry and improve on yourself. Do you think people will start using moulded Eba to celebrate social events like marriages, birthdays, etc? Cakes! Cakes! Cakes! = Naira! Naira! Naira!

8. Public Speaking
Well if you have all these skill and you don't know how to sell it, thats a big problem on its own. I therefore encourage you to learn to interact well with people so as to sell or market yourself.

I hope you will utilize this information to your advantage. Experience is a good teacher, just pray not to be on the wrong side of the learning curve. Thanks.

I was scammed in the most horrible way because my heart was involved. This started early last year. I was in my shop at Balogun one Friday afternoon when a young man and his wife came into my shop to buy clothes. Actually the wife was shopping on the man. After they finished, the man said he has a brother that he will like me to meet and from there we can start a relationship if we like each other. At first i was skeptical but i gave him my number to give to his brother. The brother started calling me saying that he is based in Abj and that he is a widower with a son. infact, this guy bombarded me with calls for good six months. We never got to meet all this while. I usually speak with the son, his mother because he said they all live with him in his mansion in Abj. The son is a boy of 7years and he really sounded like a good son. I was already loving father and son. When he first invited me to come, i declined because i felt if he loved me, he should be the first to come and see me. He was often claiming busy with a project on-going in Abj. On Monday of a particular week, he told me he was traveling to the Singapore for an urgent meeting and that on his way back from his trip he would come to Lagos straight so we can finally get to see.

He traveled and i was speaking to his mother and son as they kept calling me and i was used to them. On Friday morning around 7am, i received a call from the son saying that his grandmother just slumped and that he has been trying to get her up since he's alone with her in the house but he can't. I was panicking, i couldn't reach "my guy" so i told him to go out and call neighbours to help him. i later got a call around 9am that they are in the hospital but the doctors want some money before they can start treatment. they said they needed 100k. They sent me details, i quickly wired 50K and i went to the park to enter a bus heading to Abj in the hope to see the "poor woman". I kept communicating with the young boy and got the name of the hospital and ward. I got to Abj around 10pm, a town where i knew nobody and called and called. The number was switched off. My dear up till now. Both money, "my guy", "son", "mother", "friend" , no one is reachable. I thank God for everything atleast, i was not used for rituals. grin

I will try as much as possible to be honest with
you guys..
I will advice you leave for Kwara state a day to
camp so atleast you can be assured of early
registration, bed space, avoid the never ending
queue etc.

Yikpata is in Edu local govt of Kwara state and it
about an hour plus ride from ilorin..
Concerning camp facilities, I will say it Ok but
not the best..There is water supply mainly in the
morning and night and atimes in the afternoon
when Corp are on parade ground..
Electricity supply is fair also..The weather is
damn hot here in Kwara state..
I'm sure you guys have read many stories about
camp food generally in Nigeria.. if you want the
best, come to camp with enough cash also.
Before I talk about Posting to place of primary
assignment but befre that I will advice never to
bring too much loads to camp cos you will be
given what we call 7 over 7 and also an extra
pair of white shoes..

RELOCATION ISHH.
relocation is done in camp and also three month
into ur service year. For those that will love to
relocate to place of ur choice, it's advisable you
get the necessary documents and apply for
relocation on time via your platoon officers or
you go directly to the people in charge and
submit the necessary documents
For married women, once you can provide proof
that u are married, then you will be relocated to
the state where your husband is based..
For those who will be applying on medical
grounds, get a medical report from a government
hospital preferably..Even if you be forging one,
make sure they don't find out or else they won't
grant it..

NOW TO THE KOKO.. POSTING TO PLACE OF
PRIMARY ASSIGNMENT..
The simple truth is many ppas don't pay Corp
neither do they provide accomodation..
The state government doesn't pay Corp
either so you guys have to make do with 19800..

P.S FOR THOSE WHO WANTS TO RELOCATE
...IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE AT NYSC, NOW IS
THE RIGHT TIME TO START MAKING CALLS
REGARDING YOUR RELOCATION ...
WISH YOU ALL A NICE TIME AT YIKPATA CAMP.
thanks a lot man!

But entering their villages, some still live in mud huts as house. some places is very rare to see a single modern house. Igbos' rock jare, they try to develop their villages by building modern houses. Then tomorrow Yoruba ppl and other tribes would be saying "igbos and village" especially because they always travel home for festive seasons like Christmas. Of course who would want to spend Xmas in a mud hut.

I served in 2013 and funny enough in kebbi state. During my NYSC, I made around 400 thousand naira aside my alawee.

Let me quickly explain.

1. I offered to assist fellow corps to save their money (Cuz its hard not to spend it) and in exchange they pay me 1k per month. I had about 50 people patronizing me during NYSC.

2. I helped polytechnic students type their final year projects and assignments at cheaper rate. God blesses me and my boss in my ppa allowed me use the office printer for free so I was making around 10-15k per week from this.

3. I taught in a private school as side runs. I was favoured in the sense that I only come when I have a class and leave once I'm done. I was paid 8k per month from this.

4. I held private home lessons for primary school children near the house. God so kind, I was making 5k per child each month. We used to meet 3 times a week. I had about 3 children.

5. I built a wireless network to help NYSC in the state speed up their camp registration process. This really helped me a lot. I read a few things online and applied it to help NYSC and it worked. In return, I was taken to 2 camps as NYSC staff still as a corps member. Made 40k each time aside feeding expenses.

6. I taught computer courses to fellow corps at 10-15k each. Was able to train about 6 corpers during my time.

7. As the key drummer in my CDS (dance and drama), I made some money every time we were invited to perform at events.

Those were the major activities I engaged in during my service year.

I went on to use the money to pursue professional certifications, and today I can proudly say I am a network professional with competence in Cisco, Microsoft, Comptia, Huawei and Mikrotik network technologies, as well as project management according to PMI.

Don't ever be discouraged. There are hidden blessings and countless opportunities in the most unlikely of places.

Wishing you success all through the year.
25th birthday on March 24, 2016. You are all invited.

Cheers.
men I love your versatility!!
