In a significant show of political magnanimity, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has offered an unconditional political amnesty to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 21, 2024 Edo governorship election, Barr. Asue Ighodalo.

The Governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua on Friday, in Benin City, explained that his offer of political amnesty to Ighodalo, whom he said has been sidelined by his political benefactors, is a show of true sportsmanship.

Governor Okpebholo who described Ighodalo's “discomforting situation” since he was defeated during the election as troubling, urged him to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing development efforts across Edo State.

"I want to publicly invite Mr. Asue Ighodalo to us in the APC so that, together, we can advance the cause of development in our dear State. Since his vision aligns with what we are already doing through God’s help, we believe he still has a role to play.

"Godwin Obaseki, who lured Asue Ighodalo to come and run for elections, is hiding in the United States of America. Half of Obaseki’s cabinet who regarded Ighodalo as their own personal vending machine have all deserted him and are hiding abroad.

"As a brother who truly cares for Ighodalo's wellbeing, I believe that this political amnesty will save him from this humiliation and loneliness. As a people, we have a task of ensuring that we continue to develop Edo State, protect our people, and work hard to re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Asue Ighodalo can be useful in these key areas," Governor Okpebholo stated.

Emphasizing the need for unity and reconciliation beyond political divides, Governor Okpebholo assured Ighodalo that any past political differences would be set aside if he chooses to accept the unconditional political amnesty.

“We are ready to forgive and move forward. What matters now is putting Edo State first. The time for politics is over. This is the time to work for the people and ensure that the dividends of democracy reach every corner of the State,” he declared.

Governor Okpebholo’s offer to Ighodalo is coming barely 24 hours after the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja affirmed him as the winner of the last governorship election in Edo State, dismissing the PDP candidate’s appeal.

Meanwhile, the gesture has been described by his Chief Press Secretary as a deliberate move to foster peace and heal the divisions that emerged during the last governorship election in Edo State.

Itua said the Okpebholo-led istration has continued to prioritize peace, security, and sustainable development, and this latest call for unity is another strategic step towards deepening those efforts.

The Peaceful Edo Initiative, under the banner of the Movement for a Peaceful Edo (PEM), has launched a statewide campaign aimed at promoting sustainable peace and tackling insecurity, cultism, and unprofessional conduct by some security personnel in Edo State.

The convener of the movement, Comrade Aghedo Gifted, at a world press conference on Friday, in Benin City, said the initiative was born out of growing concerns over the recent wave of violence and unrest plaguing communities across the state.

“Over the years, Edo people have lived in peace and harmony,” Aghedo stated. “But in recent times, we have lost our peaceful coexistence to cult-related activities, police brutality, and other retrogressive actions that have cost us dearly.”

PEM decried the devastating impact of cultism on young people and families across Edo, describing it as a menace that has delivered “unrest and sorrow” to the state.

“We have lost so much and gained nothing from cultism,” Aghedo lamented. “Great talents have been buried, families have lost breadwinners, and communities are living in fear. Cultism has done no good but harm.”

The group, therefore, urged residents to reflect deeply on the consequences of cult-related violence. “Let’s ask ourselves, ‘of what benefit is cultism to me?’ ‘Would I love my child to take part in cultism?’.”

Drawing from scripture, the movement warned that the path of cultism may seem appealing to some but ultimately leads to destruction.

PEM also raised alarm over rising cases of misconduct and harassment by some officers of the Nigerian Police Force in Edo State.

“The excessive harassment of youths by men of the Nigerian Police Force has gone over the roof and calls for urgent review. We are not ignorant of the numerous complaints from citizens—many backed with video evidence.”

According to PEM, the erosion of trust between the police and the public must be addressed through urgent reforms.

“We cannot become the criminals we are fighting against,” Aghedo stressed. “We cannot create tension in a society where we are meant to ease tension.”

While commending the efforts of professional and ethical officers who remain committed to safeguarding lives, PEM condemned the actions of rogue officers whose behavior threatens peace and stability.

The movement called on Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Edo State Commissioner of Police to urgently review the operations and conduct of law enforcement officers across the state.

“The people have lost trust and confidence in the police. We must rebuild this trust,” Aghedo said.

The Peaceful Edo Movement extended an open invitation to all stakeholders—Edo indigenes at home and abroad, residents, community leaders, and security agencies—to hands in reclaiming the state’s legacy of peace.

“With our collective effort, we will achieve sustainable peace in Edo State,” Aghedo noted. “Edo State belongs to all of us. Let’s protect it together.”

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, to arrest and initiate the immediate prosecution of the President of the (NBM) of Africa, Olorogun Ese Kakor, over alleged forgery of official state government documents.

In a petition, the Governor accused Kakor of forging government documents, which falsely claimed to authorize him to provide assistance to schools in Edo South Senatorial District. The act, he said, was not only fraudulent but a direct assault on the integrity of the state's istrative processes.

The Governor, who described the act as criminal and deceitful, said the alleged forgery was carried out in connivance with certain low-level civil servants within the state bureaucracy.

He noted that those civil servants implicated in the forgery have already been identified and taken into custody and a police investigation is currently underway to determine their level of culpability.

In a statement on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo vowed that all those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He insisted that the land title on which the NBM headquarter was erected in Edo State has been revoked, citing the organization’s alleged involvement in violent crimes and unlawful activities within the state.

The Governor urged both the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS to intensify their efforts in curbing the operations of groups allegedly involved in criminality and to ensure that those responsible for these acts are brought to justice.

The immediate-past Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu has congratulated the Nigeria Super Eagles on their 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali.

In a statement on Friday night, Shaibu, who is among the Nigerian contingents to Rwanda, also congratulated the Alhaji Ibrahim Gusua led Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), for the win.

He noted that beating Rwanda in Kigali is a boost for the Nigerian players and Nigerians all over the world ahead of Tuesday match against Zimbabwe in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Shaibu, therefore, called on Nigerians to pray for the Super Eagles players, NFF, NSC saying that with collective prayers and Nigeria will achieve the desire goal of qualifying for the 2026 world Cup.

The Super Eagles’ 2-0 win over Amavubi in Kigali on Friday did not take them to the top of group C of the African series, but it placed them back as one of the contenders in a pool in which they inexplicably fluffed nine of a possible 12 in their previous four matches.

Turkish-based 2023 Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen played no part in any of those matches, for reasons of injury. Now, they have gone to six points, only four away from top-placed South Africa, who defeated Lesotho in a game played simultaneously as the one in Kigali.

On his first run-out in the campaign, it took Osimhen only 10 minutes to make a mark. Nigeria were awarded a free-kick on the left side of Rwanda’s area, and Ademola Lookman heaved it into the box where three white shirts were lurking. The best-placed of them, Osimhen, connected brilliantly and there was no attempt from goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.

Immediate-past Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has dismissed a viral video report alleging that he criticized President Bola Tinubu over the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and of the state House of Assembly.

A viral video surfaced on Thursday showing Shaibu sitting next to an unidentified man dressed in white, where he seemingly dismissed Tinubu’s suspension of Fubara as unconstitutional, following the president’s declaration of emergency rule in the oil-rich state.

However, in a press statement issued by his media team on Wednesday, Shaibu described the report as “false, misleading, and a product of mischief,” labeling it a desperate attempt by political detractors to drag him into non-existent controversies.

“We categorically state that at no time did His Excellency grant any interview, make any statement, or participate in any discussion concerning the current political developments in Rivers State,” the statement said, dismissing the video as “doctored.”

The former deputy governor, known for his forthrightness on national issues, emphasized that he only expresses his views through “reputable television stations, established newspapers, and other credible media platforms.” He dismissed the viral report as a fabricated narrative pushed by “desperate bloggers seeking to revive their failing careers.”

Shaibu further alleged that certain political figures, including immediate-past Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and former Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, have been orchestrating a smear campaign against him.

He accused them of stalking his activities since his exit from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and resorting to digital propaganda after failing to infiltrate his political and personal affairs.

“These same elements are now using technology, including AI, to doctor videos and manufacture falsehoods to tarnish his image or sell their agenda,” the statement added.

Refuting claims of any rift with the presidency, Shaibu reiterated his respect for President Tinubu and commended his efforts in ensuring national stability.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu holds President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the highest regard and has deep respect for his leadership,” the statement read.

“His Excellency believes that the President has, so far, been taking necessary steps within the limits of the law to protect the stability and unity of the federation.

“As a democrat and firm believer in constitutional governance, Shaibu remains committed to the rule of law and the principles of justice.”

Shaibu, therefore, urged the public to disregard the “concocted report”, dismissing it as a “figment of the imagination of those behind it.”

The former deputy governor reiterated that he remain focused and declared that he would not be distracted by “desperate politicians who have lost relevance.”

Investigation has uncovered massive financial mismanagement within the Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), implicating several individuals, including the impeached chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Council and former ALGON Edo chairman, Newman Ugiagbe.

A statement of (financial statement), covering transactions from September 2023 to September 2024, reveals several transactions involving large, unexplained cash transfers to various entities, including a hotel linked to the former ALGON chairman.

One of the most striking transactions listed on the first page of the statement is a N40 million transfer on March 20, 2024, to one Imasogie Dickson Notiemwenmwan, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain via Skye Bank (now Polaris Bank). The purpose of this transaction remains unclear.

Additionally, a series of payments totaling millions of naira were made to Demarriot Hotel Limited, a hospitality business linked to Newman Ugiagbe. The repeated transactions to this establishment raise concerns about possible money laundering or misappropriation of public funds.

Other large disbursements include:
* N9 million to the National Council for Women Society (March 18, 2024)
* N6 million to an individual named Abadonis Enghonmwanyeke (March 15, 2024)
* N5 million to Imasetoba Johnbull and Company (March 20, 2024)
* N30 million to Nosama Pharmacy and Stores Ltd (March 21, 2024)
* N60 million to Demarriot Hotel Limited (March 22, 2024)

These transactions, coupled with excessive NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP) charges and Value Added Tax (VAT) deductions, suggest a systematic siphoning of public funds by ALGON under Newman Ugiagbe.

Following the suspension and subsequent impeachment of the 18 local government council chairpersons in Edo state, investigators have intensified scrutiny into their tenure. Sources suggest that some of the funds may have been laundered through shell companies. A shell company is an inactive company used as a vehicle for various financial manoeuvres.

Only yesterday, the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will prosecute some of the impeached council chairmen indicted for looting the Local Government treasuries, running into over N96 billions.

Governor Okpebholo made this revelation when he received the report of the istrative of Enquiry set up on the 18th of December, 2024 to investigate the financial dealings of the impeached 18 Local Government Chairmen in Edo State from 4th September, 2023 to November, 2024.

Besides the impeached Local Government Chairmen who were indicted by the report, former governor Godwin Obaseki, leaders of the factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), among others, were also fingered, according to a statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Fred Itua.

Expressing satisfaction with the committee for the professionalism with which it carried out its duty, Governor Okpebholo said, the days of financial recklessness and lack of transparency in public office were long over, as “Nigerians need to start demanding ability from elected public office holders”, stressing that “it was the only way to fight corruption and ensure development.”

Governor Okpebholo, while expressing dismay at the findings of the report that implicated the impeached 18 Local Government Chairmen, vowed to petition the EFCC on the findings of the report for immediate prosecution.

Chairman of the , Barr. Solomon Imohiosen, while submitting its report and recommendations to Governor Okpebholo, noted that findings and forensic investigations uncovered that huge sums amounting to N96 billion was either mismanaged and/or diverted to private s.

The observed that N95 billion (N95,080,676,687.86) was received from the t Allocation Committee (JAAC) by the 18 Local Government Area Chairmen for the period investigated. It, however, reported that the funds were not judiciously utilized as no meaningful projects were on the ground to justify the amount received.

Confirming fraudulent diversion of Local Government funds to political godfathers in the State, the reported that over N10 (10,433 658,452.00) was fraudulently siphoned, using the psudo name, “Security, Environment and Training”, saying that the 18 Local Government Area Chairmen contributed to the , using it as a conduit pipe to drain government resources, as money were transferred from there to various individuals and companies.
