As I go around the internet once in a while – mostly when I need to read articles related to the brain or memory – I often come across some types of pictures, and these pictures often quietly amuse me. They are photoshopped pictures of the brain. Usually, on these pictures, the human brain will be made to look like it is a cache of drug capsules, or a roll of leaves, or a tangle of tree branches and climbers, and sometimes, it is just an assortment of foods. These pictures are often created to represent the subject matter of the article I am reading. As such, an article about what alcohol does to the brain may feature the picture of a brain flowing with beer, complete with the froth! These pictures can be amusing, but they actually tell a truth. And the truth is that we are often what we consume. The kinds of food we eat often have an impact on our personality, mood, and even behavior. The brain has been said to consume over 20% of our calories while we are at rest, and even more when we are deep in thought.[1] Either we choose to look at it from the perspective of calories or not, this shows that the foods we eat may have some impact on our brains. In any case, to achieve maximal brain health, foods can’t do it alone. Avoidance of stress and alcohol, and getting regular exercise and sleep are some of the co-travelers that must be with the right foods – in a journey to build a healthier, happier brain. So what kinds of foods are the best for brain health? A cursory search of the internet will show you that most recommended foods are plant-based, indeed, you may notice that it is very rare to find a list devoted exclusively to animal-sourced foods alone. It is that oversight this article wants to repair, for some reasons. Firstly, most of the lists available on the internet seem to favor vegans more than any other diet lifestyle. We can’t call it a deliberate bias though, because we have no proof. But it seems their writers seems to have neglected the fact that there are many cultures (and individuals) around the world who do not possess (or have never even seen) many of the plants/fruits/herbs they are recommending. In fact, some regions in the world have an abundance of livestock and seafood over edible plants, so a large part of their diet revolves around meat and other animal-sourced products. Secondly, we have previously intensively covered on this site many plant-based products that are reputably good for the brain. Our previous articles on plant-based foods that are good for the brain include one on blueberries, another one on strawberry, another intensive one on walnuts, and a smasher on olive oils. So because of the above reasons, it is just right that this article should be focused on animal-sourced foods, and we are sure by doing that, we would do the world a lot of good. As we go into revealing to you the animal-sourced foods that might be good for the brain, keep in mind that our recommendations should never be used as a substitute for direct medical or dietetic advice from your doctor or other qualified clinicians. Don’t also forget to read our “Conclusions and General Recommendations” at the end of this article to learn whether you need to adopt any food item we recommend: 1. RED MEAT red meat and vegetables Red meats are meats that are dark red in color when uncooked.[2] It’s usually a feature of every livestock meat from cows and sheep down to wild but edible animals like deer. Poultry meats are not red meat. The major reason why red meat is considered good for the brain is that it contains iron. Specifically heme iron. Heme iron is a kind of iron found in red meat but lacking in plants. The kind of iron found in plant-based foods is non-heme iron. Iron is already quite well known for being helpful to cognitive and behavioral functioning, with some publications claiming that its deficiency at any point in life can change “cognitive and behavioral functioning”.[3] The heme iron found in red meat is readily more absorbed than the non-heme versions found in plants.[4] So it’s just logical to obtain our iron from animal-based sources like red meat than plant-based sources if we want to benefit our brain health with nutrients like iron. Although, we will recommend that you take red meat in moderate proportions. Consuming too much of red meat may be bad for your health in the long run. In addition, we will recommend that you go with parts that are lower in fats when eating red meat. For example, if you are eating beef, look for parts like top round, top loin or top sirloin.[20] 2.
