Students of the Federal University Otuoke Bayelsa State are protesting after many failed attempts to convince the school management to rectify the continuous glitches that occur on the school fees portal. The aggrieved students are saying “NO” to the decision made by the school management asking those affected by the glitches on the website to defer their studies for another year. A source told Campus Catch that the students in their number began the protest when the dean of student affairs asked affected students to commit suicide if they are not ready to defer their studies.

The former Malian Prime Minister, Boubou Cissé, and President of the National Assembly, Moussa Timbine have been freed by the junta known as the National Committee for the Salvation of the People. This follows the earlier release of the now ex-president Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta on Thursday barely ten days after the same military force ousted him from power and consequently placed him, along with some of his camp, in detention at a military base in Kati. The liberation of these government officials honours the commitment the NCSP made with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) who, along with the United Nations, demanded their immediate release after the news of the military coup in Mali broke out. Keita, currently at his private residence in Sebenikoro, Bamako which is under surveillance by armed and masked soldiers of the Malian police forces who stand guard at the entrance to his home, is yet to release a post-liberty statement. However, rumours of his request for medical care overseas have been circulating. The resignation of IBK, as he is commonly referred, came after 3-month long protests by the M5 opposition movement based on frustrations with a failing economy, corrupt government and years-long Islamist insurgency plaguing the nation. The NCSP has stated their intention of setting up a council to oversee the general elections as soon as possible in order to appoint a transitional president whether that be civil or military and stabilise the political situation within the country. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/08/mali-junta-release-ousted-pm-boubou-cisse/

Jihadists have ambushed a civilian convoy in Borno state, killing two people and injuring 15, militia sources said Friday. The gunmen opened fire as the convoy, under military escort, was heading to the town of Gamboru near the border with Cameroon late Thursday, they said. “The insurgents killed two civilians and seriously injured 15,” militia leader Ibrahim Liman told AFP. The convoy, comprising mostly traders, was coming from the regional capital Maiduguri, 130 kilometres (80 miles) from the Cameroonian border when the attack occurred in the village of Mussine. “The troops returned fire and the attackers retreated, but unfortunately two people were killed among the engers,” said another militia leader, Umar Kachalla. Travelling on highways in northern Borno has become dangerous as fighters from the so-called Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and rival Boko Haram set up bogus checkpoints where they kill or abduct engers. The situation has prompted the authorities to organise travellers in convoys under military protection but attacks have persisted. It was not immediately clear which jihadist faction was behind the latest attack as both Boko Haram and ISWAP operate in the area. The decade-long jihadist conflict, which spilled into nighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, has left 36,000 and and displaced around two million from their homes in Nigeria alone. Chinese consumers could boycott Apple if the United States bans WeChat, China’s foreign ministry spokesman warned Friday, as the clock ticks down on a US order to block the popular social app. US President Donald Trump this month announced a ban from mid-September on WeChat and another Chinese-owned app, TikTok, accusing them of threatening national security, further stoking tensions between Beijing and Washington. But foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian tweeted Friday that “If WeChat is banned, then there will be no reason why Chinese shall keep iPhone and apple products”. Zhao had already on Thursday said, “many Chinese people are saying they may stop using iPhones if WeChat is banned in the US”, and accused the US of “systematic economic bullying of non-US companies” by targeting the Chinese app. The comments mark a rare direct reference by Beijing to boycotting an American product and come as the superpowers spar on multiple fronts including military activity in the South China Sea, Hong Kong and blame for the coronavirus. Chinese social media s on Friday responded with mixed feelings to Zhao’s warning on Twitter, which is blocked in China but accessible through virtual private network software. “I use Apple, but I also love my country,” one on the Twitter-like Weibo platform. “It’s not a conflict.” “No matter how good Apple is, it’s just a phone. It can be replaced, but WeChat is different,” another argued. “Modern Chinese people will lose their soul if they leave WeChat, especially business people.” Source:https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/08/china-warns-consumers-could-boycott-apple-if-us-bans-wechat/
