A Lagos High Court sitting in the Tafawa Balewa Square area of Lagos Island has heard how Chidinma Ojukwu, the key suspect in the murder of Ataga Usifo, late Super TV CEO, transferred about N5m from his hours after his death.

The details came to light during the testimony of the ninth prosecution witness DSP Olusegun Bamidele.

At the proceedings today, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs Adenike Oluwafemi, told the court that the matter was for continuation of trial.

Bamidele was then led into the witness box to continue from where he stopped at the last sitting.

Oluwafemi asked for exhibit P11, which is the Access Bank Statement of Ataga and asked the witness to tell the court why he had the bank statements of the deceased.

The witness said that during the course of investigation and in a bid to know what could have motivated the first defendant to kill the deceased, the police wrote Access Bank asking for the bank statements of the deceased and a copy was given to them.

He said that a close look at the bank statements combined with information obtained from the phones of the deceased showed that Chidinma had been in control of the s since Ataga’s death.

The body of the late Usifo Ataga was discovered on June 16, hours after he was believed to have been murdered.

Th witness testified that on June 15, Chidinma used Ataga’s phone to transfer N5m from his to another bank.

“On June 16, 2021 four transactions of N20,000 each was made from the deceased’s and on June 17, another withdrawal of N20,000 each was made five times and the remarks was transfer between customers.

” On the same June 16, N50,000 was transferred to Nkechi Mogbo, N11,200 was transferred to Caprical Capital and another N93,000 was transferred from Ataga’s Gtb bank to his Access bank .

“A transfer of N110,000 was debited from the deceased’s on June 18, 2021.

“On June 19, 2021, a transfer of N20,000each was made four times and another transfer of N20,000each was made five times and it was through the USSD code,” Bamidele said.

The witness also explained to the court how the police wrote Gtb Bank to get Ataga’s statement of .

He said that on June 13,2021, there was an internet transfer of N10,000 to Chidinma, another N105,000 was also transferred to Chidinma on the same June 13, for the payment of the short service let to Nkechi Mogbo, the owner of the apartment.

“On that same June 13, there was a N13,000 purchase transaction at Angle Villa, 14,200, transaction for purchase at Dwine Bar global, on the same June 13, there was a transfer of N20,399.

“On June 14, 2021, there was N21,000 transfer from Ataga’s to Chidinma’s and another transfer of N15,000 paid to Chidinma, there was a N5000 transaction that was made on June 14 and paid to Adiba Online choppy,” he said.

When the prosecution sought to it the written statements of the defendants, Chidinma’s counsel Onwuka Egwu, objected to the issibility of the document.

He said that she didn’t make the statements voluntarily as the police had obtained them by oppression, inducement, intimidation and under duress. He urged the court to test the voluntariness of the statements.

The second and third defendant’s counsel, Babatunde Busari and Miss M. A. Abia-Bassey did not object.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya has however adjourned the case to November 8, for a trial within trial to determine the voluntariness of the defendant’s statement.

A sensitive murder case
Chidinma Ojukwu is standing trial before Justice Yetunde Adesanya for the alleged murder of Usifo Ataga.

Chidinma was arraigned on Oct. 12, 2021 alongside two others Adedapo Quadri and Chioma Egbuchu (her sister) on a nine-count charge preferred against them by the Lagos State Government.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing the first to eight counts bordering on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making of bank statements and stealing.

The third defendant, Egbuchu, is facing the ninth count of receiving a stolen iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga.

Ojukwu and Quadri were alleged to have conspired and murdered Ataga on June 15, 2021, by stabbing him several times with a knife on the neck and chest.

The Security guard of the short let service apartment where Ataga was murdered had during his evidence before the court on November, 16, 2021, said that Chidinma left the apartment on Tuesday, night which was June 15,2021 and never came back.

He had also told the court that it was on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, that the dead body of Ataga was discovered.

The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the PDP in Lagos State, Ms Funke Akindele, says God called her and the PDP Governorship Candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor) to change the story of the state if elected in 2023.

Akindele, a popular Nollywood Actress, made this remark at the Sunday Worship Service of the Ayo Ni O Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Surulere District, Badagry Circuit Headquarters.

According to her, God has been with her right from birth and He is interested in her aspirations to make Lagos state work for all segments and divisions of the state.

“God has been with me from infant till I went to school and till now. He chose me to be the deputy governorship candidate of the PDP, despite the crowd that struggled to be chosen.

“I give God all the glory for what he has done. God has always been doing the best for me.

“We were called by God, if not we would have backed out. People have suffered but God has called us and put us forward to come and change the story of Lagos state to better. The success of Lagos state is ours,” she said.

Akindele thanked the church leaders for prayers and .

Leading a congregational prayer session for Akindele, Snr Apostle Akinwale Pearse, the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the church, urged of the church to pray to God to fulfil the aspirations of the deputy governorship candidate.

Speaking, Dr Sunday Hunyinbo, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Badagry Local Government Area, commended Akindele and Adediran for seeking God and his blessings in their aspirations.

Hunyinbo urged the deputy governorship candidate and her principal to live the talk and fulfill all the promises made to the people during their campaigns if they emerged victorious in 2023.

“This time around it should not be business as usual. I saw sincerity of purpose in them when Jandor met with us yesterday. Badagry has been marginalised enough.

“We are praying for you. God will take you there. I am neither an APC or PDP or LP member but God’s will will be fulfilled. God will back you up,” Hunyinbo said.

In his sermon, Pastor Adedokun Adewale, who stressed the need for all people to fear God, said that man’s disobedience and sins led to his fall from the creation.

According to him, the fall of man is not the end as God is merciful and faithful, requiring repentance from man to avoid eternal death.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adediran and Akindele flagged off their campaigns on Wednesday to begin the tour of 245 wards across the 20 local government areas of the state.

While Adediran continued to hold meetings with critical community stakeholders and groups in the area, Akindele had been touring various markets and churches to seek ahead of the general elections. (NAN)

Lokoja-Okene bound drivers expressed
disgust on Sunday as fuel hit at least
N230 per litre in Okene and Lokoja local
government areas of Kogi State.
A DAILY POST correspondent, who
visited some filling stations in Okene on
Sunday, reports that the current scarcity
of fuel in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital,
has extended to Okene, with major
filling stations without fuel to dispense
to motorists.
In a few filling stations where fuel was
sold, it was at a cost of at least N230
per litre, while some drivers said the
price could be as high as N270 in other
filling stations in the area.
Commenting on the development, a
Lokoja-Okene bound commercial driver,
Issa Mohammed, described scarcity of
fuel in Okene as worse compared to
Lokoja, where the product is sold
between N220and N225 per litre.
“The current hike in the price of fuel,
especially in Lokoja and Okene, is fast
going beyond the purchasing capacity of
an average commercial driver to cope
with.
“Hardly can any commercial driver in
Lokoja and Okene can boast of making
a tangible profit at the end of the day’s
business as all our proceeds go for the
purchase of fuel which continues to hit
the roof,” Mohammed told DAILY POST.
“Many of us are still in job because we
have no other profession to fall back to,
not that there is much profitability in the
job again.
“We will be happy if the government can
help us check black marketers in the
fuel business so we can at least make
some profit or break even in this
business.
“The terrible hike in motor spare parts,
accelerated wear and tear of our
vehicles, and bad road are also issues
giving us sleepless nights as much of
our proceeds go for the purchase of
spare parts and repairs of our vehicles.
Mohamed’s colleagues, who aligned
with his observation on the issue, called
on the federal government to supply
more fuel to the filling stations as a
natural way of forcing down the price of
fuel to the official level.
Our correspondent reports that transport
fare, which used to be N500 or N600
from Lokoja to Okene (70kms), as the
case had been a few months ago, has
risen to N1,500 per trip and, in some
instances, N1,800.
Commercial and tricycle operators in
Lokoja and Okene are not spared, as
they have also hiked their services by 50
to 80 percent, citing the skyrocketing
price of fuel.
Some engers who also complained
of the hike in transport fare,in separate
interviews with DAILY POST, called on
NNPC limited to direct its searchlight on
shylock dealers selling fuel beyond the
official pump price of N179 per litre in
the area.
