ST. LOUIS—A fatal shooting involving police officers here Tuesday just miles from the suburb racked by unrest over the death of an unarmed black teenager has raised fears of additional turmoil in the area.

But police described a very different scene at Tuesday's incident, saying a man acting erratically was approaching officers with a knife when they both opened fire.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson alleged in a news conference that a 23-year-old black suspect entered a store multiple times and took energy drinks and pastries. After his second time leaving the store, the store owner asked him to pay for his merchandise. The man allegedly threw the pastries into the street, and the shop owner called the police.

When police officers arrived, the man pulled out a knife, Chief Dotson alleged.

(Ferguson: Demonstrators defy police).

Chief Dotson said the suspect told police, "Shoot me now, kill me now," while continuing to walk toward them brandishing his knife. He said the officers asked the man to drop his weapon, but he continued his advance. Once he was within 3 to 4 feet of the police, both officers shot and killed the suspect, Chief Dotson said.

A woman who said she was on the sidewalk near the parking lot where the altercation happened said a young black man and a store clerk from a convenience store were arguing with each other, the clerk accusing the man of stealing a cupcake and two energy drinks.

The man threw the food on the ground and walked away, she said. Minutes later, the police showed up and the man, who had what she said was a kitchen knife and who she said was acting erratically, walked with the knife toward the officers. The police then fired what she said were multiple shots.

Chief Dotson said he couldn't confirm how many times the man had been shot and said the matter was still being investigated.

No officers were injured during the event, and the investigation is continuing. Chief Dotson reported that the shooting happened in St. Louis' sixth district, in the northern part of the city. This is about 5 miles from Ferguson, Mo., which has been in a state of unrest for more than a week, following the shooting by a white police officer of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old.

"We can all understand what's going on in Ferguson, but I think every police officer who's out here has a right to defend themselves and the community," Chief Dotson said.

The officers were placed on istrative duty in accordance with the police department's policy, Chief Dotson said.

A crowd of about 100 gathered Tuesday afternoon at the intersection near where the shooting occurred, occasionally chanting "hands up, don't shoot."

"Today marks the 10th day since Michael Brown, and another young black man [was] killed," Mike Davis, 47, who lives across the street from the shooting and said he heard the shots.

Cynthia Favored, who lives down the street from the incident, said she was worried it could inflame the situation. "Twice in two weeks, it's crazy. I was sitting at home and saw it on TV and said, 'Oh my God.' "

Three doors down from the corner convenience store where Tuesday's incident took place, LaToya Allen was enlisting as many family as she could to help her pack up everything they could in the Heavenly Touch Salon and Spa, the beauty parlor she has operated for a more than two years. She was trying to get everything out in case of potential looting.

"I'm not taking any chances," said the 25-year-old who rents the shop space. "I don't want to have my business burned down."

Ms. Allen's mother and sisters were helping her pack up as they talked about logistics of moving the boxes of nail polish and salon equipment out to a car.

Every few minutes she ran outside to see if the car was there to help her move. Outside the shop, a crowd included a man holding a homemade cardboard sign that said, "What are we gonna do! War!!"

"For me to have to do this is horrible," she said. "This is the only thing I have—my business."

Opeomoope: The menace of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria will soon be a thing of the past, President Goodluck Jonathan has assured. Jonathan gave the assurance yesterday in Ile-Ife when he dropped in to pay homage to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade, on the way to the Peoples Democratic Party campaign rally in Osogbo.
The president vowed to rid the country of insurgency and other forms of criminality, saying that his government is building a strong security infrastructure to deal with the country’s security challenges.
He said, “There are certain things we should have done as a government, but because of the situation in the country, we have not been able to do many of them. The kind of embarrassment we are receiving now - will never continue in this country.
“We want to build a very strong Army, Nigeria Police, Navy, and the Air Force so that these rascals called Boko Haram will never stop us because we will surely rout Boko Haram. We are very committed.
“In the next few months, no criminals will ever embarrass us again - in this country.”
The president assured Oba Sijuade that if the PDP candidate won the election in Osun, the federal government will bring development to the state.
Earlier, the monarch had while welcoming the president said both Osun State and the South-west needed federal government's presence the region’s core sectors.
“For instance, in the agricultural sector, cocoa farming, which is the mainstay of the economy of South-west, deserves better attention. In the aviation sector, it would be appreciated if the ongoing upgrading of the Ibadan airport is completed. In the transportation sector, it is high time our railway system was expanded to link the South-west with the South-east through Akure, Owo and Benin,” Oba Sijuade said.
Jonathan also paid homage to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.

A man has been tested for ebola in the uk – increasing fears over the threat posed to Britain from the deadly disease.

He was tested at a hospital in Birmingham after arriving back in the uk from nigeria via Paris.

Fortunately the man was given the all-clear after tests, the Daily Mail reports, but the scare has sharpened focus on the possible spread of the virus to Britain.

Meanwhile, doctors fear ebola victim Patrick Sawyer may have sparked a worldwide spread of the killer disease after being allowed on two flights while infected.

And tonight a desperate race was on to find dozens of engers who flew on the same jets as the 40-year-old American.

British doctors and border officials have been warned to be on the lookout for people in the uk showing signs of the disease.

Mr Sawyer was allowed to board an ASKY Airlines flight in Liberia, where ebola is rife, despite vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea. His sister was recently killed by the virus.

Protection: The disease is a global threat

He had a stopover in Ghana then changed planes in Togo and flew to the international travel hub of Lagos in nigeria. The dad-of-three died five days after arriving in the city.

Lancaster University virologist Derek Gatherer said engers, crew and airport ground staff who came into with Mr Sawyer could be in “pretty serious danger”. ebola is fatal in 90% of cases.

Doctors have identified 59 people who were near him and have tested 20. But they are struggling to find the others, who could have flown to anywhere in the world from Lagos.

There were today questions over how Liberian government worker Mr Sawyer was let on flights while clearly showing symptoms of ebola – which has killed 672 people in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone since it broke out in February.

Experts from Public Health England have met uk Border Agency officials to make sure staff are aware of the signs to look for in ebola sufferers.

PHE has also used its national medical alert system to advise all uk doctors to “remain vigilant for unexplained illness in those who have visited the affected area”.

Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhoea, fever, weakness, headache and sore throat.

Those struck down can also suffer internal and external bleeding. The virus is spread through human . There is no cure.

PHE director of global health Dr Brian McCloskey described the ebola outbreak as the most “acute emergency” facing Britain.

The expert said he had briefed David Cameron.

He added: “When these things start to escalate we work with everybody to ensure they are aware of what needs to happen.”
