A REMINISCENCE INTO FOUR (4) YEARS OF PROF IKONNE’S SUCCESS STORY AS VICE-CHANCELLOR OF ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Ahamefula Israel

The award winning Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Eminent Professor E. Uche Ikonne was four years into his five years tenure on the 1st of December 2019. He assumed office formally as the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University on the 1st of December 2015.

Unarguably, Abia State University, has had its best days since establishment in the last four years of Prof. Ikonne’s istration. It’s almost or impossible to think of any aspect of the University that has not developed rapidly since he came on board.

Renowned for his charismatic leadership style which involves blowing hot and cold depending on which strategy best suits what he intends to achieve, Ikonne has successfully taken ABSU from analog generation University to a fast rising 21st century institution.

Despite assuming office at a time the nation was going through one of her worst recessions of all times, Professor Ikonne has been phenomenal. He is leaving indelible marks in the areas of infrastructure and development, programmes expansion, security, among others. Gradually, the university is becoming a huge construction site.

It’s on record that no Vice Chancellor in the over 39 years lifespan of the institution has completed or come close to completing more capital projects than Prof. Ikonne. In of curriculum offerings, it’s also the same. He holds the record as the VC who has established more programmes to meet the contemporary labour demands than any other in the history of the University.

Interestingly, the profile of the University, nationally and internationally, is rising radically. ABSU, like the Association of African Universities extolled sometime last year has become not just a national pride but a global brand.
The days when ABSU was dismissed with a wave of hand are over as students and products of the University have taken the National and International community by storm. It wasn’t long ago that students from the University won the champion of the 2019 All Nigerian Universities Debating Championship held at the University of Calabar, Cross River State. Similarly, the University also fielded students that represented Nigeria at the Pan African debating championship in Ghana.

At this juncture, it is imperative to note that ABSU held her first ever alumni convocation after over 36 years under the Ikonne’s istration. Many former Vice Chancellors tried to unite the alumni and got frustrated at some point, but Professor Ikonne, a foresight leader, who sees impossibility as illusion took up the challenge and today, the alumni association of the University has received a formidable from the incumbent istration of the University, which has in return placed the activities of the association on a smooth sail.
Similarly, he initiated the first ever Eminent Persons lectures series of the university, to proffer solutions to the societal problems thereby contributing to the socio-political and economic development of the Nation and the society at large, as well as organized the first Igbo Cultural festival in the university, to give impetus to the promotion of Igbo Culture and Tradition.
No wonder the 5th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, Professor Mkpa Agu Mkpa described the University under the tenure of Professor E. Uche Ikonne as “the golden era of the University”.

Below is an attempt to highlight some of his achievements under different units of the University represented in themes. This is not comprehensive because it’s too difficult to put together all the numerous things he has done in such a short period in this epistle:

Like earlier stated, this list is not absolutely comprehensive as it’s herculean task to capture Prof. Ikonne’s landmark achivments as Vice Chancellor. Many projects may have been missed out in this but howbeit, ABSU has risen in the last four years more than any other Nigerian University and this is enough to celebrate.
There’s no doubt that he will do more because his ion to turn things around in the University is as strong as the first step he took upon assumption of office.

It's the lab scientists that you still see referring to 'emselves as "lab doctors" abi? That is even nothing. They have their own problems too within their rank; scientists vs technicians and it is a big thing, soon to get uglier than scientists against doctors.

And well, other "budding" disciplines too use to stethoscope as a means of identification and are gradually adopting the "dr" prefix such that very soon, every personnel in the hospital environment, from the ant down to the orderly will need to be called a doctor.

Funny enough, regardless of the fact that they are the ones expected to, I don't see doctors crazy about this fad of sticking stethoscopes to their dashboards or rear view mirrors but other hospital non-doctor employees have adopted this style. Now does that not mean some complex issues?

I think with this upsurge of kidnapping for ransom, no doctor would even wanna risk advertising himself as a potential prey so as many as possible can decide to carry the stethoscopes around. Even the engineers, lawyers, hospital staff are free to if they so desire. It's really not about what you display, is it? It's basically about the skills that gives you away as the real doctor.

What u wish for, does not and will never exist.

I am sure your are not informed!!!!.

dokyOloye:

Why comment on what you don't fully understand?
Let me give you an example, a lab scientist is trained to run test, with a little background scientific knowledge of the basis of diseases.
A pathologist is a doctor who specializes in laboratory tests with a deep knowledge of clinical basis, signs and symptoms, etc of diseases.
B/w d a tests done by a scientist and a pathologist, which will you consider more reliable?
Do you know sometimes, a patient goes in for surgery, loses blood, then does a test to check d blood level and it comes out higher than d one b4 the surgery and the scientists pushes it out like that to d doctor.Meanwhile all d clinical info is on d request form. Now this error might not be a human error but due to spoilt reagent, equipment etc.
Now a pathologist will likely dismiss d result, collect another sample and repeat d test.
With a knowledge of d foregoing, who should be heading d lab?
Who was d first lab scientist?
Who was d first pharmacist?
All are doctors.

Not as lucrative as the ones I put on bold.

Nursing, Medicine, Radiography are good courses to study in Nigeria and stand a chance of at least securing a job after graduation.

Not that they will make you rich, no, they will at least give u a job to start life with while other of your mates are still job hunting around.

But if you want to be rich via career in Nigeria, forget medicine, radiography or nursing, unless u are ready to travel outside Nigeria to US, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, etc and be ready to work your ass off with overtime hours to make it big and maybe end up rich and be ready to further beyond your first degree too lipsrsealed

Bro this is your opinion .... Medical Laboratory Science is as Lucrative as......!!!!!

I am hoping to be married this year 2019.

What medical test am I to take to avoid stories that touch?

NB: I know blood group is compulsory, I think I am AS. What else?

Blood & rhesus grouping

Hb genotype

HIV

you can add
Vdrl and more.....

Note:
Blood group can be A, B, AB or O

Rhesus can be either Rh 'D' positive or negative

Hb genotype can be AA, AS, SS etc.

However , Rhesus is very essential to avoid complications during pregnancy, Where Rhesus negative mothers are been properly taken care of to avoid such complications.

And
Hb genotype is to avoid getting sickle cell child.
As u said, u r AS... YOU can only go for AA to avoid having SS child.

Vdrl, HIV... To avoid having the risk of getting syphilis and Hiv infections respectively.
