The topic of genotype is a very complicated one. Don't forget a union between two AS genotypes has only 25% chance of birthing a child with SS, 25% AA and 50% AS.

Interestingly AS confers resistance to malaria especially in Sub Saharan Africa. That's why the genotype seems to thrive over here.
