A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Chief Afe Babalola has dropped criminal charges against the Lagos-based lawyer, Dele Farotimi.

The founder of Afe Babalola University disclosed this at a pess conference attended by some prominent traditional rulers led by the Ooni of ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Sunday evening in Ado-Ekiti .

Farotimi is facing multiple charges over his Book titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System” where he alleged that the elder statesman compromised the judiciary.

Babalola said he decided to drop the criminal defamation charges against the Lagos based human rights activist following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe, and other prominent traditional rulers in the country.

According to him, he had ignored interventions from different personalities within and outside the country, but had to yield to the appeals of the traditional institution, adding that the statement of an Oba in Yoruba traditional from time immemorial is a command.

“I rejected an oil block and defended the EFCC law and also rejected ministerial nominee twice,” wondering why any one would just wake up and try to rubbish all he had laboured for.

Addressing journalists, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Oguwusi appealed to Babalola to consider the various forces and personalities that have intervened in the matter.

He hailed Babalola’s contributions to the development of the Yoruba people, the nation and the world at large.

“We all came together to discuss the matter with him and he gave all the full respect to the Obas and agreed.

“We Obas can attest to the hard work of Aare Afe Babalola and how he had invested so hard to build his name and that cannot be tarnished and rubbished by anyone.

“Aare Afe Babalola has proven to the world that he cherished his name and the world has heard him loud and clear.

“Dele Farotimi is your son, we give birth to different children in this world and as elders when our children offend us as Yoruba after a little spank, we also pardon such children”.

President promises to immortalise martyrs

•NSA Ribadu to coordinate peace parley
Concrete steps are being taken by President Bola

Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and critical stakeholders in Rivers State to restart oil production in Ogoniland.

The President and the governor yesterday identified the entrenchment of peace in the oil-rich community as a catalyst for its clean-up and development.

President Tinubu urged Ogoni leaders, who were yesterday led to a meeting by Fubara at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to set aside their age-long differences and grievances, and hands with the government to achieve the set goal in Ogoniland.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike ed the meeting midway.

Talks on restarting oil production and environmental clean-up of Ogoniland, among other issues, topped the agenda at the meeting held at the President’s instance.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President assured Ogoni leaders that his istration would prioritise peace, justice, and sustainable development in the area.

“We cannot in any way rewrite history, but we can correct some anomalies of the past going forward.

“We cannot heal the wounds if we continue to be angry,” the statement quoted the President as saying.

President Tinubu, who called for inclusive consultation and mutual understanding, mandated National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to coordinate negotiations.

He commended the delegation for embracing the Federal Government-led dialogue and emphasised the need for collaboration, trust, and inclusiveness to resolve lingering issues in the region.

“We must work together with mutual trust. Go back home, do more consultations, and embrace others.

“We must make this trip worthwhile by bringing peace, development, and a clean environment back to Ogoniland,” the President said.

He directed the relevant ministers, the Nigerians National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Rivers State government to cooperate with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to achieve the mandate.

The President said: “It is a great honour for me to have this meeting, which is an opportunity to dialogue with the people of Ogoniland.

“It has been many years since your children and myself partnered to resist military dictatorship in this country. No one dreamt I would be in this chair as President, but we thank God.

“Many of your sons present here were my friends and co-travellers in the streets of Nigeria, Europe, and America.

“I know what to do in memory of our beloved ones so that their sacrifices will not be in vain.”

Thanking the President for his for the Ogoni people by welcoming an all-inclusive representation to the State House, Fubara said the meeting was a follow-up to an assignment given to him by the President through the NSA.

Emphasising the importance of resuming oil operations in Ogoniland, the governor pledged the delegation’s commitment to adhering to the President’s instructions and providing the necessary to achieve the government’s objectives.

He said: “What we are doing here today is to concretise the love and respect we have for the President for being behind this meeting and for him to tell us to go back and continue the consultations with a timeline so that the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland will commence.”

Ribadu also commended the Ogoni people for their trust in President Tinubu and for embracing dialogue as a path to meaningful progress and enduring solutions.

“Guided by Mr. President’s vision that every voice is heard and every interest is considered, my office, the DSS, the government of Rivers State and the Minister of FCT embarked on a diligent and consultative process to assemble this delegation,” the NSA said.

He noted that the over 50-member delegation that met with the President reflected the rich diversity of Ogoni society, representing various constituencies, interests, and viewpoints.

“The presence of this delegation is a testament to the Ogoni people’s readiness to engage constructively in the pursuit of peace, justice, and sustainable development,” he said.

King Festus Babari Bagia Gberesaako XIII, the Gberemene of Gokana Kingdom, who spoke for the Ogoni leaders, expressed their willingness to engage in the process of finding lasting solutions to the lingering challenges in Ogoniland.

At the meeting were Senators Bennett Birabi, Barrynada Mpigi and Joe Porom, Magnus Abe and Lee Maeba; Olaka Nwogu, Victor Giadom, Chief Kenneth Kobani, Monsignor Pius Kii, Leedom Mitee and Gabriel Piidomson.

Also yesterday, Minister of the Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, said remediation of 36 polluted sites in Ogoniland has been completed.

He said seven additional water projects have also been done as part of the government’s commitment to environmental restoration and development in the region.

The minister, who spoke after the meeting, highlighted the istration’s significant strides in tackling longstanding environmental challenges in Ogoniland.

He said: “This istration has been doing very well because the project has been there for over five years, but the commitment of President Tinubu has moved it forward remarkably.”

Noting that before the Tinubu istration, only one water project was completed in Ogoniland, the minister added: “As I’m talking to you now, eight have been commissioned, so seven have been commissioned under the istration of President Tinubu.”

In addition to water supply, the government has made substantial progress in the remediation of polluted sites.

“In the area of remediation, we have done about 36 sites; they have been completed, and they’ve been certified as environmentally conducive for people,” the minister confirmed.

On what the government is doing to address health concerns linked to pollution, Lawal explained that efforts were underway to build medical facilities and conduct comprehensive health assessments in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).

He said: “We are doing a very comprehensive analysis of the kind of ailments in that area, and we are working to address the issues of pollution-related illnesses.

“Restoring Ogoniland’s ecosystems has been another priority, with significant attention given to mangrove reforestation.

“So far, we have planted more than two million seedlings of mangroves in the last six months, and we’re still on that. The mangroves are the source of livelihood for many, ing fish, shrimp, and crab populations.”

Lawal expressed optimism about the ongoing efforts to restore peace and economic activities, including oil prospecting, in Ogoniland.

“I feel that this istration, more than any other, has done so well for them in trying to bring them back to where they were,” the minister said.

Tinubu made the announcement in a birthday message to the Nobel laureate who turns 90 on July 13.
“It is also fitting we celebrate this national treasure while he is still with us,” Tinubu said.
“I am, accordingly, delighted to announce the decision of the Federal Government to rename the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.

“We do not only celebrate Soyinka’s remarkable literary achievements but also his unwavering dedication to the values of human dignity and justice.”
The president added that “Professor Soyinka, the first African to win the Nobel Literature Prize in 1986, deserves all the accolades as he marks the milestone of 90 years on earth”.
“Having beaten prostate cancer, this milestone is a fitting testament to his ruggedness as a person and the significance of his work,” he said.

In 2005, the professor served on the Encyclopædia Britannica editorial board of advisors.
Soyinka was also in the proverbial trenches as activists battled the military to enthrone democracy.
“Beginning from his 20s, he took personal risks for the sake of our nation,” the president said.
“His courage was evident when he attempted to broker peace at the start of the civil war in 1967.
“Despite deprivation and solitary confinement, his resolve to speak truth to power and fight for the marginalized was further strengthened.
“His early writing, such as ‘The Lion and the Jewel,’ ’Death and the King’s Horseman’, not only testified to his mastery of language, his innovative storytelling, but also his unflinching commitment to enthroning a fair and just society.
“Our paths crossed during our just struggle for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
“When faced with a trial in absentia and death sentence by the military regime at home, he galvanized opposition in exile through NALICON and NADECO.
“His global stature made him the face of our struggle to validate June 12 and restore democracy in Nigeria.”
Tinubu described Soyinka as a Nigerian whose influence transcends the country, noting his vocal criticism of the then-apartheid era in South Africa and recurring racist acts in the US.
“I wish Professor Soyinka an incredibly happy 90th birthday,” Tinubu said.
“May he continue to inspire us all to build a nation where people are free from oppression and our teeming youths can live up to their dreams without being a wasted generation.”

Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, says the comments by Osita Chidoka, his predecessor, are “hypocritical”.

On May 22, Chidoka, former minister of aviation, said the federal government must not allow Emirates Airlines to resume operations in Nigeria without being held able for their “disrespectful and demeaning conduct”.

According to Chidoka, the audacity of the airline to return to Nigeria “reeks the contempt and disdain towards our nation”.

In his reaction on X on Wednesday, Keyamo said Chidoka’s advice should have been directed to Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president and presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He asked Chidoka why Atiku was not advised to sell his assets in Dubai as a protest to the ban on visa and flights.

UAE and Nigeria have been engaging in a diplomatic row over issues involving flight allocations and travel bans since 2021.

On December 13, 2021, UAE issued a travel restriction on engers from Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, citing a surge in the countries’ COVID-19 cases from engers of the two African nations.
However, TheCable reported the travel ban might not be unconnected with the diplomatic row between Nigeria and UAE, over Air Peace’s flight frequency to the Arab country.

Air Peace had requested a slot of three weekly flights from Nigeria to Sharjah Airport in UAE, but only one was granted by the country’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

GCAA said Air Peace should not expect to retain its flight frequency after pulling out of Sharjah Airport — the Nigerian airline, however, denied the claim.

In retaliation to Air Peace’s treatment in UAE, the federal government dropped Emirate’s slots from 21 to one — leading to the Dubai-based airline suspending all its flights to Nigeria.
Speaking further, Keyamo questioned why Chidoka “fail to similarly advise” Atiku as he has done regarding the Emirates Airlines’ resumption announcement.

“To demonstrate your patriotism, sincerity and fidelity to the touted ‘Nigerian Pride’, the big puzzle is, why did you fail to similarly advise your boss, principal and mentor Atiku Abubakar to immediately relocate from Dubai to Nigeria and sell off all his assets there in protest when the ban on visa and flights were announced?” Keyamo asked.

“Hypocrisy has never been this audacious!

“Again, it is curious that, as a member of the think-tank of the PDP, your election strategy at a time (popularly dubbed ‘the Dubai Strategy’) was hatched in the same Dubai and not in Nigeria before the ban was announced. Why export a purely Nigerian project to Dubai if you loved Nigeria so much?
Keyamo said the effort by the current istration is focused on fostering healthy relationships with major partners around the world for the ultimate benefit of Nigerians.

“Considering the huge investments and interests of Nigerians in the UAE, should we continue to engage in ‘Bolekaja’ (motor park) diplomacy capable of hurting the interests of Nigerians?” he asked.
“Will the imminent return of Emirates to Nigeria and in reciprocal manner, Air Peace returning to operating that route, not lead to better competition which will ultimately crash the present high fares on that route?

“Who will benefit more? How many Emiratis visit Nigeria and invest here as much as Nigerians visit the UAE and invest there? Have you bothered to ask about the lifting of the visa ban before issuing your warped statement? For your information, that has been resolved too and the announcement is imminent.
“Rather than craftily resorting to the card of false nationalism in pursuit of cheap political points, you should have told Nigerians the economic disadvantages Nigeria stand to suffer, if any, as a result of the commendable effort of the Tinubu istration to straighten our relations with our friends in the UAE.”

Keyamo also said Chidoka should advise the PDP to work harder to regain power in 2027 so they can resume the hostilities with the UAE authorities

Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi, withdrew $720,000 from the state’s coffers to pay his child’s school fee in advance.

Olukoyede spoke in Abuja on Tuesday during an interactive session with media executives.

The EFCC boss alleged that the former Kogi governor transferred money from the state coffers to a bureau de change operator, and used the money for his child’s school fee in advance.

Olukoyede added that Bello made the payment in anticipation that his tenure was gradually coming to an end.
“A sitting governor, because he knew he was leaving office, moved money directly from the government to bureau de change and used it to pay his child’s school fee in advance,” the EFCC boss said.

“Over $720,000 in anticipation that he was going to leave the government house. In a poor state like Kogi, you want me to close my eyes under the guise of ‘I’m being used’. Used by who? At this stage of my life.”

Olukoyede said he inherited the case file of the former Kogi governor, noting that he did not initiate the investigation against Bello.

Madowo, who made this known on his LinkedIn on Monday, disclosed that despite holding a Kenyan port, which grants visa-free access to numerous African nations such as Uganda, South Africa, and Ghana, Nigeria requires a substantial fee of $215 for a single-entry visa.
He wrote, “Nigeria just charged me $215 for a one-month, single entry visa. Again. I was here three weeks ago – paid the same $215. This is actually my third time in Nigeria this year, so they have made $645 from me in 2024 alone.
“The visa itself costs $25, but Nigeria charges a $20 ‘processing fee’ and $170 for biometrics every time. My fingerprints haven’t changed since I was here three weeks ago. Why am I paying $170 to have them taken and to pose for a picture each time I visit? Isn’t that a standard part of itting someone into a country?
“How can we achieve a borderless Africa, or the promise of the AfCFTA, if we charge Africans $215 for a single-entry visa?
“In the three weeks since I was last in Lagos, I went to Uganda, South Africa, and Ghana, where I don’t need a visa with a Kenyan port. In fact, I’ve also been to South Africa three times this year. It cost me $0, like the ancestors intended.
“Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival system is similar to the ‘visa-free’ delusion of Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorisation – you apply in advance, submit some documents, and wait for it to be approved. It can take up to five business days. If you know ‘someone,’ you can pay them $50 or more to ‘facilitate’ a faster approval.
“I love Nigeria, but the visa situation is showing me shege. It’s too much oo! Why this Shege Pro Max?”
I want to ask him if Kenyan gives Visa waiver to Nigerian

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, while giving the quit notice lamented the security risk the occupation of underneath the bridge by mini buses, block moulders, fuel sellers and miscreants posed to the safe operation of the blue rail line service, and said the government would not allow it to continue.

Just because you “went to swear an affidavit to say to say I am the same person as ATIKU Abubakar” does not automatically mean you are the same person.

I think we should ask WAEC search through their archives for the documents that were used to this Sadiq Abubakar, just to be sure that nothing fishy has been going on for over 40 years.

Recall that the same request was made on WAEC for PMB’s result.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday explained the discrepancies in his Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) certificate.
Atiku made the clarification through Dele Momodu, in a post on his X handle.
Recently, a group had given Atiku and Peter Obi bi a seven-day ultimatum to release their academic records or face legal action to compel the disclosure.
According to Momodu, the clarification became necessary following allegations of forgery against his principal by of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Momodu alleged that some of the APC had questioned the name ”Sadiq Abubakar” in Atiku’s WAEC certificate as against his other credentials.
‘Yes I used Sadiq Abubakar to sit for my WAEC and after ing my exams I went to swear an affidavit to say I am the same person as ATIKU Abubakar.

“I went to ABU as Atiku Abuakar and ed my Exams as Atiku Abubakar. Interviewed as Atiku Abubakar by the Federal Civil Service Commission and hired into the Customs Service as Atiku Abubakar. So where is forgery there?’
But the same Atiku Abubakr that is quick to allege that another candidsate forged a certificate is now claiming that he sweore to an affidavit that both Saddiq Abubakar & Atiku Abubakar are the same person

The federal high court sitting in Lagos has ordered the Delta state government to disclose details of how over N200bn in education funds was spent under the istration of Ifeanyi Okowa.

The funds were collected by Okowa’s government from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) between 2015 and 2019.

On July 17, Daniel Osiagor, the presiding judge delivered the ruling, following a freedom of information (FIO) suit marked FHC/L/CS/803/2019 filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and ability Project (SERAP).

SERAP had asked Okowa’s government in 2019 to for the spending of the UBEC funds but his istration declined at the time.
The anti-corruption group subsequently filed an FIO lawsuit, among other things, seeking to compel the Delta government to “explain the disparity between budgetary allocations to primary education and the reality that several of the 1,124 primary schools across the state are in shambles, and with very poor teaching facilities”.

In the judgement, the court ordered Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of Delta, to “disclose details of budgetary allocations and actual spending by the Okowa government between 2015 and 2019, including specific projects carried out to improve primary education in Delta state, and the locations of such projects.”

The judge held that SERAP has a “cognizable legal right to inquire and know the way and manner public institutions manage public funds”.
“I must say that every citizen has a duty to demand transparency and ability in the governance of public institutions,” Osiagor said.

“Why should a request for details of disbursement and spending of public funds between 2015-2019 by Delta state be a cause of litigation for four years? Public officials are fast developing a state of anomie and cold feet when confronted with requests for audit reports of public duties and budgets,” the judge observed.

Osiagor ordered the Delta state government to “disclose how the Okowa government spent over N7.28 billion, received from UBEC between 2015 and 2017, and N213 billion received from the Federation s Allocation Committee (FAAC) in 2018, at an average of N17.8 billion monthly”.

The Delta government is also to disclose “details of the primary schools that have benefited from the projects carried out on access to free and quality primary education”, including information on indirect costs, uniforms, exercise books, and transport costs to students and their parents

This is a laptop bag with USB port. I would like to import it, but I don't know if it'll sell here in Nigeria. What do you think? Do you think I should import it or not? What would you rather I import instead? What would you advise me to import instead? I mean a fast moving product/products. I need your opinions/suggestions please. Thanks.

I also plan adding backpack. So that it won't be only laptop bag. What do you all think?

Tinubu's Open Letter to Chief Bode George
15 March 2023

Dear Chief Bode George,

It is with genuine purpose and a peaceful intent that I write you this letter. I do so because the time has not yet come for you to proceed to political self-exile.

It will not be a thing of happiness for me that my emergence as President-elect will herald your departure from public life in Lagos and Nigeria. I, therefore, urge you to shelve all thoughts of self-exile and political retirement.

A capable opposition is a fundamental requirement of good governance, pushing the incumbent istration to be its best self or face electoral oblivion at the next election. In your many years in opposition in Lagos, you have never been victimised or persecuted; neither by me nor by any of the Governors who came after me.

The presidential election was hard yet cleanly fought. At the end, a victor was declared and, by the grace of God almighty, the Nigerian people chose to make me their next President. However, we must not take the battle so personally as to threaten retirement any time we fail to win. Defeat is as much a part of politics as victory.

As President, I will draw no distinction between er and antagonist. I will not grant undue favour to those who voted for me nor will I persecute those who voted against me. I will govern for the benefit of all Nigerians.

Under my leadership, Nigeria shall be a good and pleasant home. There will be room for freedom of expression. There will be economic growth and development. There will be opportunities for the young and social safety for the old. There will be security for all.

I hope you find it within yourself to stay and be a part of Nigeria's hopeful future. However, if you feel that you do not want to live in the new Nigeria, nobody, least of all me, can force you to remain here. Whatever you choose to do, I bid you Godspeed.

SIGNED
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
