@Iykestix, organise free tutorials and get past questions and solution across departments in the faculty. get the phone no of each course rep and be friendly with him/her. More so, get a unique name which you intend to use for your campaign, paste it across the departments and at the faculty usually with a philosophical quote e.g "QUITTERS DON'T WIN, DON'T QUIT........ FAMOUS", with your s with the course reps, get the phone numbers of the students and send bulk SMS with greetings and information too, ensure you include your unique. The name of having a unique name is to get it ed in the mind of the students and before you know it, your name will be very popular in the faculty and gradually they will be so curious to know who bears the name. Find out about scholarship opportunities, go to the classes and inform them about it. You can meet the lecturer who is to lecture a faculty course usually with large number of students and plead with him to give you 1-2 minutes to an information because that is the best time you can have the students together in one place; use the opportunity to an important information and to drop a quote with your unique name. Meet prominent people in each department especially girls and tell them early that you are interested in the position so that before any other aspirant shows interest, you already have taken the lead. I wish you all the best.

In Nigeria, promise what is not achievable, play godsoniship in secret and appear most humble by drinking sachet milk and sharing soft drink with friends.

During my time.... I immediately bought forms for myself and 6 other guyz, and I even printed posters for them too and they did class to class campaign also, other students lost interest since we are now 7 contesting for the same position........ On Election day , they all stepped down for me and I became unopposed candidate........ The guyz must be trusted though, if not , you are just digging your grave by yourself

If you can do the following; you will win the election and be the most useful and memorable Gen Sec that your school will ever produce. First, that service means doing everything possible to improve the lives of your fellow students, department and institution. Now you need to find and recognise some of the things that are not in proper order at the moment and design a new vision for them all. For example, are you satisfied with how past executives attended to the issues of students or how the school authority treat students? If not, take some time out to think about what is wrong and develop a new vision of what can be done better. What would you do differently? If you think you cannot do anything different, you need to quit now. If you can make a change, congrats! let me give you a few quick tips. if you are not sure of what problems you can solve, find out some top institutions, could be ones abroad and do your research on what student istration looks like over there. Find two better Unis than yours in Nigeria and three abroad. Did you find any lacunae between yours and them? If so, how can some of the ideas you have seen be brought home to your own institution to better the current situation? That is the leadership puzzle. Now that you have a purpose and goal; let's do some marketing moves. 1. Scholarships: I know that there are few scholarship making organisations that many students are not aware about I mean locally and abroad. You can research them and put them together in a list which you can avail to students. Print and give them out with useful information and suggestions on how to apply, etc. Use a space to yourself and why students should go out voting. Before handling the papers out, get people's number and details so you can text or call later. But don't just print them anyhow, organise the lists and make it useful to students who attend your institution. For example, organise scholarships for Master's students who may want to proceed for masters after their first degree, organise scholarship list for short programs or for undergrads who may get some relief towards their studies by applying to certain organisations etc, etc. 2. If there is enough time left organise a pre-election event (don't associate the event with the forth coming election but make it an event that will attract those who will vote. Event suggestions: Saturday Quiz Night with Food & Drinks (Provide snacks and drinks; ask some of your trusted associates to donate food and drinks or approach someone who can sponsor it to take charge of food and drinks). Put together a very good quiz night and let there be lots of fun, play music and let it be worthwhile... no too much seriousness. Make people pre so you have an idea of how many people are coming. At the event, show up and drop a 2 mins talk, be visible as the organiser and let everyone know that you will be the next Gen Sec but you need their . Speak to people one on one and get their emails, phone numbers etc and send messages to appreciate them for coming.. also remind them about the election. Suggestion 2: Meet the alumni: - Can you find a few graduates of the Uni who can share some thoughts with current students? If so, organise one for few hours, and also provide enough to eat and drink... follow the same approach as above... Suggestion 3: Organise an open cinema in the school premises and show films that students will die for...(follow the same approach as no 1). (ask for more event ideas if you won't find the two above easy). 3. Clarify your vision: Design a simple web page and outline your vision and goals as the new Gen Sec; outline some of the things that you are not happy with and that you feel can improve. Share this weblink in every possible way on campus with target students. Also seek to speak to people one on one - at canteens, door to door and wherever you can find them. Note that 60% of men will promised to you will not show up on the day, ladies are more reliable and will bring their friends too. Target ladies more and don't over promise anything to them. Just say the basics you can do and ask for their . 4. Can you adopt this formula as your campaign slogan? S + P + O = S This means Success only happens when Preparation meet Opportunity. Attach your name to it and call it something like Iykestix Formula. Paste it around the campus and text it to available phone numbers, also make it visible any where possible. Not like it serves any extraordinary purpose, but it will be memorable and make people have your name on their lips; as anyone would wonder who the formula means and seek to solve them. 5. Attend events organised at the school and ask to speak if possible and speak to people one on one where possible. If you win the election Break your Vision and Purpose into smaller goals and look for the short wins (low hanging fruits} which are things you can easily achieve. Go for them and move on to the next short win and the next one. Then consolidate them all. For example, if you can help fight the case of a student who has been suspended unduly by the school authority and then another one, and another one, put all the cases together and seek for your fellow executives to back an initiative to stop the Uni from suspending anyone without an initial warning letter or when the offence is not severe - as you can define. This is just an example, please apply as the context demands. 2. Push further by seeking for collaborations with inside and outside partners; for example, can you approach a scholarship making organisation asking for for your students because some of them come from low income families. You may be surprised at the outcome. Another collaboration can be getting in touch with some scholarly institutions, depending where you are asking them to bring mobile libraries to your institution due to to students, for example, because the library is too far away from hostels and students find it difficult to travel to libraries on weekends. And this affects academic performance. 3. Can you fight for free WIFI for students on campus? If so, include this in your campaign and outline how you want to do it. You can either fight it out with the school authority which may be difficult because of lack of funding and leadership or seek some outside partnership. I can give you some ideas on this later if you want, but it is possible. A way to take this up with the Uni authority is to champion that all students activities be digitized, assuming it does not exist, which I believe. For example, in advanced Universities, lectures must be online and all curriculum have to be available through online moodles, not simply handed by hand to students. This helps students in a lot of ways. Can you fight for this to happen, if so, include it in your campaign agenda and let the Uni know that free WIFI is essential. 4. Measure yourself as you go along, ask yourself what strong and genuine change you have brought. Have you affected any change, did you achieve your goals and purpose. If yes, push for more before your tenure ends, if not, review your self and see what you can do differently. My 2 coins, goodluck! 3 Likes |

Hmmmm......back in the days.... I will only ask the timeline for the elections. Is it soon or still a bit far!? In school politics, you must start the moment you get in there. You ought to have an identity. Every school have their peculiarities, but...idid and famouscargo4U have given you a broad perspective. 2 Likes 1 Share |

idid: Wow. This really educating, in the aspect of collaborating with other institutions to improve the well being of the student, can you suggest some institutions I can go to ask for help? Can you also give names of schools students association that I can use as model both in Nigeria and in the diaspora? I also have a plan of holding a student summit but I've haven't really found a program that concerns the office of a GEN SEC and how it can be useful to the student istration. I just don't want to make my position a ive as I perceived my predecessors to be, I want it to be so active that people will give the "you too do set" talk. I also have other questions I'll like ask concerning this I hope you don't mind my anxiety in trying to make a difference. Thanks allot. |

Just complain and complain about the present establishment, complain about the school find one nonsense to complain about, toilet -exam etc, also try to connect the other opponents to the establishment so your killing two birds with one stone It helps if your angry with the school already |
