Thirdly, a bag of rice in Lagos now cost between 18K and 19K per 50KG bag while Derica tin poor man buys between 220 and 250 naira now cost between 350 and 400 naira and still increasing. This is the imported rice price and the only rice in traditional local / open market. In South West, South South and South East Nigeria where I spent months on local rice availability research, there is no Lake, Olam or any other locally produced rice in the open market. Coscharis may make rice available in the East but not yet.

There is no GLUT in the rice production sector in Nigeria, no availability in the market. The President, NSA and Customs CG are all from the Nigerian Army, I think the Staff College, War College and NIPSS courses in those days were very defective about management.

I also noticed the inclusion of Niger border closure is just a camouflage. I don't want to dwell on that today.

South Africa is too developed to be affected by economic policies of the front line States. The US concerns herself so much about the welfare and wellbeing of her citizens. But since the border was closed, I only bought a small rubber Paint of rice for #1500 with the hope that before we finish consuming it, the borders will be opened again. Bro, I am saying this for you to know I am also feeling the heat...but truth is, I have been into agric business for sometime now, and I have noticed when there is too much of a farm produce in the market, we the sellers don't gain much..in fact sometimes, we lose(like it was experienced last year).

Many Nigerians don't " refuse " to consume local rice.they go for foreign ones because they are way cheaper. It's not by force for a country to produce everything.The u.s with all their level of advancement still imports coffee ,honey and live animals. Of what use does buying expensive rice benefit the impoverished masses.

What you do is give a window that would allow importation between a particular time, while also sounding the need for local cultivation. This would allow people store the many they need now to consume while they wait for the ones they planted to grow.

Are the rice facilities we have now enough to feed the population? What about cost? The imported one is cheaper than homegrown. So these are things you need to consider. It is a nice move, but it needs a softer approach.

Closing the border is a painful but necessary move. Govt. has not being able to curtail the smuggling influx , corrupt border officers whose family and friends are part and parcel of those blaming "Govt."

There is no need for a perfect condition(meeting demands internally by our local producers) like some are suggesting , it won't happen for obvious reasons. The large imports from neighbouring market is a well sustained and cabal market that will at the moment out compete local producers of rice.If i setup a rice farm and rice milling plant in Nigeria, employing mostly Nigerians, and i am competiting with large shipments of imported parboiled rice, i may soon be displaced from the rice supply chain, and you can be sure my workers are going to be unemployed. Govt has set the ball rolling by ing Nigerians rice farmers and milling coys in the last 5 yrs at the least, it is time to go hard on the importers of those "expired" rice creating most of the jobs for Thailand, Beninoise,Nigerien, e.t.c

The acclaimed importers of the southern region is one of the challenges facing the economy of this country but they won't accept this fact. There type of business is a threat to every typical growing nation like ours. I will keep saying it.

I am not sure if outright shutting of the border is the best option here , why not raise tariffs heavily on those goods we can manufacture locally ?
