RIPAN to begin sale of rice at N13,300 per bag The Rice Processors Association of Nigeria on Thursday said the association has agreed to sell rice for between N13,300 and N14,000 per bag. The association also expressed for the Federal Government’s closure of the land border with Benin Republic and other neighboring countries. President of RIPAN, Mohammed Maifata, said this during a chat with journalists in Abuja. He said, “We are not going to take advantage of the border closure for ourselves by hiking the price of rice. “As such, we all agreed that we are going to sell our rice from now on at N13, 300 minimum and maximum, because for some, their location is very far from the paddy and so very difficult for them to operate — but upon that, there is no Nigerian rice that will be sold above N14, 000 at factory. “This is the commitment we made to government and we are determined and we are willing to keep to our words God willing. Any contrary activities is not from us as we expect saboteurs to take advantage of the situation. But we assure you that this will be our price.” He commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its current fight against smuggling of the commodity, and called on various security agencies who are mandated by the current directive to intensify the fight to check the various porous borders. Maifata said the move was needed to address the rising case of rice smuggling into Nigeria from neighbouring countries. It described the border closure as “long overdue,” noting that it was done in the best interest of the economy. The association said the action of the government had suddenly returned life to the rice value chain, as the hitherto subdued mills have resumed operations within one week of the border closure. The earlier we come to with reality, the better for us as a nation. Whatever the prices at which foodstuffs are sold in the market today, following the present govt regulations on their importation, is the real situation of the market forces. However, I still feel the govt regulation should be confined to forex rather than closing borders in addition. Source for your foreign currency outside the cbn, import whatever you want to import, pay the appropriate duties (done everywhere in the world), then bring the goods into the market for competition. The other time, some illiterates were on buhari's neck for directing the cbn to stop giving food importers a cent, cos according to them, he has no business in the matters of the apex bank, wtf. Let's even not talk about how the cbn is subject to the regulations of the executive. Are these not the same stark illiterates blaming Buhari for increase in naira/dollars exchange rate? Is this done in aso rock? 52 Likes 5 Shares |

ProsperChild:A sincere and caring government acts in the interests of its populace. Though its actions might be initially hurting, the citizens will eventually reap the long term benefits in abundance. We shall surely get there and we shall attend self-sufficiency in no long time. However, Nigeria Customs needs to work on smuggling of rice into Nigeria from Ogun state especially through the Ilaro-Oja Odan axis. 13 Likes 4 Shares |

I ton (20 of 50kg) of rice is $150 in Thailand and India Dollar at 355; $150 is about 53k naira. Meaning 20bags is 53k. Therefore one bag is #2650. My question is, do Nigeria farmers use gold as fertilizer for for their own rice? With the huge difference in price, the temptation to continue to import is very high. 76 Likes 6 Shares |

Nigerians and rice eh, like 5 & 6. But wait a minute, is it a must for Nigerians to eat rice?? It's the crazy appetite for rice that is fueling all this smuggling and increasing price.

Simplyleo:I totally disagree with this. It was this same forex policy that almost drove the USD to #600 in 2015. You don’t know how desperate some people can be. 10 Likes 2 Shares |

I am always tempted to call our manufacturers and farmers evil men everytime. Our farmers are unable to produce enough food for the whole country but keep pleading for the federal govt to ban food importation even when they don't produce enough. Innoson motors and others keep telling FG to ban importation of used cars even when they know they can't produce enough vehicles for Nigerians and that Nigeria doesn't have functional steel plants. Security agencies keep destroying "illegal refineries" even though the "legal refineries" are not working. Same thing also happen in other sectors. Evil men everywhere.

Rice here is 22,000 per bag already,if they can put addresses where people can buy this rice across the country,it will be appreciated, except they are just making mouth as usual.

Their intention may be right for Nigerians but the issue is; we consume close to 4m tones yearly! Can they cater for the rice loving Nigeria population? We are very economical with the truth. Only a million tones maybe available, they will say its 4-5 million. They will sell from the paddy at 14,000 and it gets to the consumer market and they will be hit with excess demand. And by the law of demand and supply, what do u get? A cost push inflation! Around 2016 we heard of lake rice in Lagos, only for us to get requirements from Lagos state government before purchase. If the supply had been equal to demand, we won't be asked to provide Lagos state lassra card before buying. My point; Measures should have been taken to checkmate counter productivity. 15 Likes 1 Share |
