Eastern Railway line in the offing as government rounds begins negotiations with the Ghana Railway line consortium to commence the 2.2 bln dollar project.

The Eastern Railway line project is set to take off soon as the ministry for Railways development has begun negotiations with a contractor the Ghana European Railway Consortium.


The rail line project is estimated at 2.2billion.

The 340-kilometre Railway line will run from Tema through Accra to Koforidua and to terminate in Kumasi. The project will be undertaken by the Ghana European Consortium under a Build Operate and transfer agreement.


Speaking to Joy Business, the minister for railway development Joe Ghartey said the contract is expected to be submitted to parliament in July.

Joe Ghartey said, "we have our timelines so we will tell them to get everything set so we can submit the full proposal to parliament before they rise in July."

According to the spokesperson for the consortium Heinz Kriczeck, the project will include the railway line, electrification and stations. He said, without the electrification, the project should cost its initial amount of 1. 8 billion but with electrification, it should be 2.2 billion.

Joe Ghartey also indicated the government will hold 30 per cent shares in the project.


The railway is expected to carry between 12,000 to 18,000 engers a day and 4 million tonnes of goods in a day.
