jarkbauer: Read your manual properly. The 5w20 is a temporal oil where 0w20 is unavailable at due OCI but must be replaced with 0w20 at the next OCI. So, it’s only a temporal measure but again, it’s your car & engine; do unto it what you like. |

jarkbauer: We are strictly talking about the 2010-2011 Toyota Camry with the 2.5l 2AR-FE engine. Or did @OP mention any other car? 1 Like |

bravolad: You are right about camry I just checked the owners manual on Toyota website. Camry 0w-20 but for other cars that use 2AR like Rav4, its 5w-20 or 0w-20 |

@ Gazzuzz Could this be same problem with 2008-2012 Honda Accord Engines that rattles at cold start? Or is the Honda problem more of factory defect? Please kindly throw more light on this Sir. |

Hello folks... Following my concern about the about the observation of a brief rattle sound on cold start.I am happy to give a on the issue. While thanking everyone for their insightful contribution, which I followed through accordingly.I employed the use of the recommended oil for the engine and I was amazed when it started without the rattle sound.Engine currently sounds like new.I noticed from some pm's I got some people do have this same issue. Like Gazzuzz advised, the vvti engine is very sensitive and doesn't tolerate abuse of recommended oil.Ensure you use the appropriate oil to prolong the life of ur engine and also improve performance. Thanks everyone for ur contributions. 1 Like |

Rayd502: Good to know change of oil worked for you. I'm just curious why rattle noise on 2008 Honda Accord engines comes up even when the right oil spec is used. |

GreekDon: failing VTC actuator it's a re-call issue. |

GAZZUZZ: Thanks for the update Gazzuzz. I had to goggle up the recall and found this:"Honda TSB Number:A09-010.V4 NHTSA Number:10087883TSB Date:March 17, 2016 Failing Component: Engine (Pws) Summary: Service bulletin - replace the vtc actuator if the engine rattles loudly for 2 seconds during cold start-up.'' So I guess the failing part has to be replaced with brand new parts right? Any idea on cost? Cc: radautoworks. |

radautoworks: Aunty Radu, Is this the updated part from Honda? Hope it wont fail again after say 2 years. Read reviews were s complained that part still failed after some time. To be specific, Honda bulletin highlighted the part number 14310-R44-A01 (that failed) should be replced with part number 14310-R5A-305. My question is if the replcement part you posted is the updated part Honda recommends? |

Interesting reports on the use of 0W 20 for 2AR FE engines. I have been using 5w 30 on my 2AR FE (2012 model) for a long long time. No issues whatsoever. I got a copy of the owners manual and it says you can use 0W 20, 5W20, 5W 30, 15W 40 and even the much maligned 20W 50! I picked 5W 30 as my viscosity of choice (a mechanic whom I trust said 20W 50 isn't a good choice for Toyota's more recent low viscosity engines) and I have no regrets. 1 Like |
